Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: HuwG Date: 15 Jul 03 - 01:36 PM At University, I heard of some Chemistry students who formed a band called, "Hoffman Degredation". You needed to be a Chem. Eng. graduate to get that one (although I did meet it in Chemistry A-Level). It's the process of converting an alliphatic (long carbon-chain) amide, to an amine, losing one carbon atom in the process. Bored ? Well, after explaining all that to the audience, there would hardly be enough time to do the rest of the gig, which may explain why they never shot to fame and fortune. How about "The The" ? This has the side-benefit of being unpronounceable in Yorkshire. |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Cluin Date: 11 Jul 03 - 01:11 PM Thanks, LH. I remembered the name, but was ignorant of the spelling. A good name can work wonders. Look what it did for The Barenaked Ladies.... instant notoriety when their name cause the Municipality of Toronto to cancel their gigs and the media lept on the story. |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Little Hawk Date: 10 Jul 03 - 04:34 PM Correct, Cluin, but they spelled it this way: Bunchafuckingoofs In that fashion they were able to advertise in the Toronto Star and so on, instead of being censored for daring to use the "F" word in print. I think they may have been the most honestly named musical group in history, and the name gave them instant solidarity with their fans as well... - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Renegade Date: 09 Jul 03 - 05:20 PM Not to beat a dead horse, but if memory serves me Muddy Waters recorded "Rolling Stone" or "I'm A Rolling Stone" in the early 50's. Pre-Elvis 50's. The Stones were enamored with the whole blues sound; they covered a lot of blues material on the early albums, and named one of those albums after Chess Records' address in Chicago. Maybe recorded some of it there. I'm sure it's on a web site somewhere. Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: GUEST Date: 09 Jul 03 - 04:42 PM How about the "High Level Ranters". British I think, but probably a major influence on the Mudcat Forum! |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: GUEST Date: 08 Jul 03 - 05:07 PM Thanks for answering. This could be a fun place. It was their first record. Red cover. Not sure, my turntable is defunct. I bought "Live at Newport" last year. First-time release of 1959 concert. Atleast it shows how well they could connect with their audience. Won't touch the bird names? |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Raptor Date: 08 Jul 03 - 12:15 PM Self what? Whats the name of the song? I'm not as familiar with the as I'd like to be. And can you recomend a K Trio record to buy please! Raptor (the add on from my last post was a joke from another thread) |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: GUEST Date: 08 Jul 03 - 11:55 AM Please, no self-flagellation! I did not say I was right or wrong, I just retracted my statement. I love peace. Time to move on. I just like the Kingston Trio and feel they are not well-treated anymore. Please listen to the song if you get a chance. PS: nice thread |

I know that they loved the blues and the Muddy Waters thing makes more sence. Respectfuly Raptor (the Plagerising Ahole). |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: MikeofNorthumbria Date: 07 Jul 03 - 12:35 PM As a youth, I fantasised about calling my first proper band "The Same". Our debut album would be entitled "The Same to You!", quickly followed by "Same Again", and then "More of the Same". After a period of rest and re-asssement, and some changes in the line-up, we'd release "Same Difference". Disappointed by critical hostility and lukewarm audience reaction, the new band would disperse for about ten years, before re-forming once more to cash in on the nostalgia market with "The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same". Then we'd do a lucrative farewell tour and disband for good. Well, it never happened, and now it never will. If anyone wants to borrow the idea, they're welcome. Wassail! |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: GUEST Date: 07 Jul 03 - 11:24 AM Radio interview with ol' Mick back in the 60's. If wrong, sorry 'bout that. I really do not like the Stones anyway. I like more positive music. Can you name the Muddy Waters tune? |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Nigel Parsons Date: 06 Jul 03 - 08:35 PM Deckman (Bob) might like 'Sweaty Nipples', but for groups who really 'get down to basics' you'd have to go a long way to beat '10cc' & 'The Loving Spoonful', both of which (apparently) refer to the average quantity of male ejaculata during sex Nigel |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Mooh Date: 06 Jul 03 - 05:12 PM Once played in a band named (by fans!) Frankie And The Penetrators. Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: GUEST Date: 06 Jul 03 - 01:47 PM My favorite groups have names like: "Rice, Rice, Hillman and Peterson", "Berline-Crary-Hickman", "Garcia/Grisman", "Auldridge-Bennett-Gaudreau" and :Rual, Red & Joe". Guess these guys have to rely on musicianship cuzz they shure can't sell the product by grabbing a clever handle! |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names From: Little Hawk Date: 06 Jul 03 - 01:41 AM 1965 is right for the Dylan song. Then the magazine Rolling Stone took its name from (most likely) the Dylan song. As to why Dylan used the phrase "like a rolling stone" in his song...just because it sounded right, I imagine, rather than that it had anything to do with Mick Jagger and the boys. In more recent times, Mick and the boys recorded the Dylan song on a live album, and did it well too. Too bad Barry Manilow never had a band name for his sidemen. Hey, let's think up one! Someone start a thread to do that, please. I have to go to bed NOW. - LH |
