Subject: BS: The Globalist - REAL journalism! From: katlaughing Date: 10 Oct 03 - 11:53 PM I heard Stephan Richter, Editor-in-Chief of The Globalist, speak on CSPAN, today. I was very impressed with what he had to say about the changes in the American media and global views in general. I consider this to be a very worthwhile online news source, based on what I heard from him and from what I've seen, so far, on their website. One of the things he said was American journalists, including the well-known top-of-the-heap ones, have all lost their objectivity by being a tad too cozy with those they are supposed to report on. He said they'd become cheerleaders for Bush and the war in Iraq, essentially abdicating the role of the Fourth Estate. He also reminded us that a journalist should give us three things, news, analysis, and opinion, in order for us to make our own informed decisions. Here's what their homepage has to say: The Globalist provides a daily account of the key issues before the global community. Combining cutting-edge analysis with first-rate storytelling, The Globalist covers the most important issues, people, companies and organizations shaping the global economy, politics and culture. From our Publisher Our core editorial belief is that now more than ever, people everywhere are seeking a better understanding of what connects — and divides — nations and societies, economies and cultures. Through cross-country comparisons, our features provide the key to understanding our common future. Makes sense to me and they are always looking for articles! kat |

Subject: RE: BS: The Globalist - REAL journalism! From: Bobert Date: 11 Oct 03 - 10:55 PM Ahhhh, anyone see any correlation with the coziness to the unmistaken fact that the big boys are fiercely trying to get the FCC to drop the last 5 regulations that stand in the way of big media just going ahead and killin' off what little competition is left... leaving 4 corportions in control of everything? Think about it....... Bobert p.s. Guess who heads up the FCC? |

Subject: RE: BS: The Globalist - REAL journalism! From: LadyJean Date: 11 Oct 03 - 11:22 PM Never mind how long ago, Ohio University gave me a B.S. degree in Journalism. (I'm not kidding. That's what they award.) We were all going to be Woodward and Bernstein. The college paper even ran a self congratulatory editorial, "Woodstein U." Somewhere along the way, a lot of us traded our ideals for perks. There are all kinds of problems with journalists. Getting accurate coverage on a weekend is difficult, since reporters don't like working Saturdays or Sundays either. (Plan protests on weekdays. You'll get a smaller turnout, but better coverage.) Journalists would rather be clever than fair. They chase after celebrity gossip instead of real news. They pander to the worst in people. They push cheap sentiment, because it makes them look like heroes. It's kind of a shame so many of us chucked our ideals. |
