Many years ago I used to visit The World's Biggest Bookstore in Toronto and the largest section in this very large bookstore was devoted entirely to Dr. Who. From: GUEST,ozmacca Date: 15 Oct 03 - 08:49 PM Out here in Oz, our ABC started running the original Doctor Who series at 6.00pm Monday to Thursday (family prime time) about three weeks back - starting with the very first. And not before time.......... It's great to see them again, and the Doctor may very well be a sixties icon, but oh dear, the old cardboard and string special effects don't stand up too well these days. I'll be interested to see how long it takes us to get a brand new series down-under. Usually the automatic taste-oriented anti-gravity system seems to cut in and stop anything half-decent trickling down the globe while letting the garbage through. |

That was what made it such a hoot, horribly bad costumes and In the early 1950s, U.S. television featured a character called Captain Video. The sets, costumes and effects were very like those from Dr. Who. What distinguished Captain Video was that the writing and acting was every bit the equal of the costumes and sets…dreadful. - Mark |

I like the Doctor (well, most of them), and I liked most of the plot lines, and many of the supporting actors. Even some of the scripts were acceptable, but as Mark said, the cardboard and string non-effects and shoestring budget made it entertainment rather than "real" sci-fi. Shame really, for the idea could have made good sci-fi, but it would have cost far too much for the BBC to produce, even if they had wanted to. It only made it off the ground because it started as children's TV. Having said all that, I'd still watch it for the entertainment value, even if I am saying "What IS this?". |

My son used to tell the girls the big cloth swishing things at the auto. car wash were the "Bumonji"(sp) coming to get them. To this day whenever any of us goes through one we laugh about it. Rog says he can just see Boy George as Time Queen. And, he figured David Bowie would play the good Doctor.:-) |

From: Dave Bryant Date: 16 Oct 03 - 05:49 AM I could think of a few suggestions for the doctor: Alan Davies Peter Firth (as a sort of middle-aged Dominick Hide) on the other hand if he could change sex when he regenerates, I could imagine either Toyah Willcocks or perhaps Caroline Quin as the doctor. Perhaps the TARDIS could do with an external update now that police telephone boxes have all but disappeared. I often wondered why it was chosen to blend in with the landscape when so many landings were on strange planets or different time periods - what about making it look like one of those Superloos ? |

From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 16 Oct 03 - 10:32 AM Dave, as I remember it the Tardis was supposed to change in each landscape but something got stuck (maybe it was the lack of money that led to that storyline!). We got TV in 1966 when I was 14 & I saw some episodes over the next 10 years before I moved out (probably not many as I never did watch much TV) & loved it. I used to read the novelisations to get my fix. I have several commemorative books, the Radio Times Special for the 10th anniversary & the BBC 20th Anniversary special, and a hardcover book by Peter Haining also for the 20th anniversary, 1983. The last episode I (supposedly) saw was when Tom Baker's doctor was regenerating as the Peter Davison Doctor - "supposedly" as my brother's old TV had a bad case of something or other - I don't think it recovered - and the pictures rolled & ghosted so badly that there were 4 companions carrying 2 Doctors when I had to turn it off, it was driving me crazy trying to see what was really happening. From: Mark Clark Date: 16 Oct 03 - 11:42 AM The TARDIS (acronym for Time And Relative Dimension In Space) looked like a London police box on the outside because it's chameleon system broke in an early episode (the first?) and it was stuck looking that way. It would seem a shame to repair the chameleon for a new series since that bit of lore was a main pice of shtik. I really can't see the point of a Dr. Who series looking like one of the many Star Trek sequels. What would be the point? That's already been done and redone. It's been awhile since I've seen the show - the PBS outlet I used to watch it on must have skipped the season with the hovering Daleks. Speaking of which, I wonder how long the new episodes will take to trickle down to PBS here in San Diego? And will they be able to shoehorn them in between the endless Lawrence Welk, Andre Rieu, and John Bradshaw repeats during their nearly-monthly begathons? Maybe it's time to shell out for digital cable so I can get the BBC... PoC |

BUT I still want to see a male Dr Who! If it was all SFX & 2003 instead of 1963, it wouldn't be the Dr Who we all knew & loved. |

The TV series were faithful to the concept of the Doctor "ageing backwards" and the actors who played the Doctor being (well, at least looking) younger in each successive series. This would rule out most of the candidates nominated above.... Kitty |
