I'd love someone to produce a book that contains all Vin Garbutt's marvellously funny, and entertaining, spoken introductions to his song repetoire. Some of those intros are works of art in their own right. His live album, "Plugged" gives a flavour of what I'm referring to.

A lot of hard work has gone into that Joe .
Please believe - it's not repetitive - he has the framework intro for each song, but the humour varies - mostly because he tries to make it different for people who he is concious are seeing him for the "nth" time - and just as important- he stretches himself - to see if he can make himself laugh.
As you probably know, he's a complete "One Off", he gets the sense of humour from his Dad - who unfortunately has now passed away - but Alf could equally be described as a "One Off" also.

I don't think you could capture the essence of Vin by reading his intros in a book. They are a joy to listen to and watch because of his brilliant delivery. I went to hear him being interviewed about his early life (born in a bucket etc) by Ray Fisher at Whitby a couple of years ago, and it was absolutely glorious.

Martin Pearson here in Australia has this talent. He of course works hard at it too. It is one of the real joys of seeing and hearing a good performer live. I'm with Herga Kitty - it isn't the same captured and frozen. Some of the wittiest performers from the past appear dated when you hear or read their routines. Joy

He is unique and brilliant and a hell of a nice guy.
Sorry Joe I've got to agree with the rest that you just have to hear, or even better, see him to appreciate him fully.
Every time I've seen him, he has lots of quips, jokes etc which only apply to that audience.

Vin is aware that most of his songs are deep and heavy therefore his intros r the way he balances his show, much in the same manner as derek brimstone and many others before.
Last week john Tams did the same whereby he sang 7 songs during each of his hour long sets.
THE TALENT IS IN MAKING IT SEEM EFFORTLESS OOPS CAPS BY accident.
tony Capstick - late of this mortal coil -was another, I'm sure their are others, Richard Digence for inst,

I thinks Vin's unique talent is doing such humorous introductions to such serious songs. Lot of people tell funny stories and then sing funny songs but very few can talk of suicide, for instance, in a light herted way and then sing songs like 'Lesley'.

One or two can beat him in having more intro than song though! I once saw a 2 hour Oldham Tinkers set where they only managed 6 songs. I had wet my draws when I left though:-)

Cheers

I saw Keith Donnelly a few years ago when after the 1st half he came on to say as he'd only done 2 songs in that half he was going to start with a song called 'Dont moon at werewolves'. An hour and half later he'd done one song in the second half and it wast 'Werewolves'. As with Vin you didnt notice time flying by.

As has been said - one offs
