Subject: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: Big Mick Date: 21 Jan 04 - 10:45 AM Seamus sent me his new CD, and I feel compelled to let you all know my impressions of it. Start off with the packaging. The cover art, and the interiors, are shots of Seamus standing and posing at various spots on The Giants Causeway in the North of Ireland. Seamus chose to use a trifold cover instead of a jewel case, and packed in one of the pockets are a complete set of lyrics. I liked it so well that I am going to use this format on our next CD, as well as on the solo project that I am planning. My guess is that this is a very cost effective way of delivering a quality product. In typical Seamus Kennedy fashion, this CD is packed with music. This is something I like and believe in. It seems to me that to leave much empty space on a CD is ripping off the consumer. Especially in these genres, where we have centuries of music to choose from, arrange our own way, never mind the ripe crop of issue to write new material from. Seamus crams about 65 minutes of music on this CD. He runs the gamut in his selection of songs hitting traditional Irish, songs of the Irish in the new country, mixing them up with songs he has written. The example of this would be his Pennsylvania Mining Trilogy. In this 3 song set, he does Chuck Roger's Sons Of Molly, a slightly altered (with permission of)Aengus Finnan song O'Shaughnessy's Lament, and caps it off with a song I heard him perform for the first time publicly, after he wrote it, in my seisun tent in Muskegon, Michigan, My Father Was A Miner. Seamus wrote this song based on a story told him by his friend Jim Cunningham. I remember the day he performed it in the Tent at the Michigan Irish Music Festival. You must imagine the setting. The tent is where we sit and invite folks to join in a jam session with the performing artists at the festival. It is entirely free form, and Seamus always joins in. The second he started singing this stunning song, I was drawn to it. It is a compelling look at the life of a miner. He then told us he had just wrote it and this was the first time he sang it publicly. You could have heard a pin drop. Here is the track listing from CD BABY. I guess what it comes down to is this. Seamus puts a lot of thought into his work. It is why he is so popular. Over the years, he has sent me much of his work. I believe that this one might be the best of a body of excellent work. You should consider it a must own CD. Mick |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Jan 04 - 11:00 AM Plus, hearing that voice issue forth-- it's like having Seamus in your living room. Of course that can be a problem if you have no sense of humor, because Seamus will be Seamus! :~) We're still wroking our way through the CD-- Hardi and I always save these for together-time, which is usually in short suppply. Suffice to say however (for now) that any day a Seamus CD arrives in the mail is a very, very good day. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson Date: 21 Jan 04 - 09:29 PM Being a DJ at a public radio station (Translation: I don't get paid), Seamus is one of those artists that, in order to have his stuff to play, I lay out some of my own "green stamps" to purchase his recordings. We get all kinds of material sent to the station, but some things just have to be purchased. Of course, I keep it in MY OWN CD collection, not the station's! I ordered my copy earlier this morning and eagerly await its arrival. Seamus, who in the world organizes your tours?! Alaska in January? I know the people up there are great, but so are the people of Florida, California, Arizona, and other WARM places! |

Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 23 Jan 04 - 03:42 AM Thanks for the kind words, guys. Mick, you're a bugger for starting this thread *BG* I had pizza and beer tonight with Alaska Mike and his lovely wife Tawmmie (he left the ugly wife Elsie at home!) I'm looking forward to seeing the Alaska 'Catters sometime over the next 3 weeks between Anchorage, Nome, Fairbanks, Soldotna and Eagle River. Big Jim from Jackson, I love Alaska in January! Cold place, warm people. Please PM me with the details of your show, address, etc., and I'll send you a set for airplay, you poor impoverished NPR mendicant! Ebbie, one of these days.... All the best. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: JedMarum Date: 29 Jan 04 - 11:40 AM This really is a fine Seamus Kennedy CD. He has made a varied and fine selection of songs. There are several very funny Seamus songs, and a few great sing-along, sort of songs. There are also a few of Seamus's great musician friends playing some trad and some not-so-trad instrumentation - whistle, accordian, fiddle, guitar - but surely I hear bass and pedal steel-like electric guitar in there, eh Seamus?? Seamus has included some favorites from Andy M Stewart, Gerry O'Bierne, Robbie MCConnell, Aengus Finan and others. The album has a light hearted feel, but it has some serious momnents too. In particluar Seamus has put together a 3 songs set he calls the Pennsylvania Mining Trilogy. The songs are The Sons of Molly by Chuck Rogers - a great song about the Molly McGuires, a society agitating for labor advantages back in the 1800s. Then he sings a great a capella version of Aengus Finnan's O'Shaughnessy's Lament. This is beautiful song; a working man's sad tale of profound loss, at the death of his young wife. The final song on the set is bouncing folk-style, bluegrass-tinged song written by Seamus, called My Father was a Miner. It tells the true story of a freind's father, and his experiences in the mines. It's a great song and a perfect, up-beat close to the trilogy. There's more ... but I'm running out of gas! Overall - the focus is on Seamus's fine, rich baritone voice. The instrumentation provides strong, comlimentary accompaniment to the vocal. This is a great album. Well done, Seamus! |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson Date: 29 Jan 04 - 12:03 PM Seamus, it is kind of you to take pity on a poor retired-school- teacher volunteer diskjocky! My (and two other co-hosts) radio show is caried on 5 stations in Missouri and Illinois. We are streamed on the web on 3 of those stations. Our home station is www.krcu.org, and our show's web address is www.yourfolkconnection.org. If you want to send any material to us, here's the station's address: KRCU One University Plaza Cape Girardeau, MO 63701 ATTN: Jim Hickam Your Folk Connection Actually, the best place to send stuff is my home. The station has the assistant manager/producer listen to all incoming CD's to determine which of our programs is the most logical place to route the music and to catalog the material into the station's files. There are times when a backlog develops, and we don't get the new CD's as quickly as we would like. If you'd rather send them to me at home, you can use this address: James Hickam 2802 CR 442 Jackson, MO 63755 In talking to Bill Staines, he told me a story about meeting you in Alaska. I'm sure you are right about the people in Alaska being very warm folks, and I know that if you are dressed properly, it can be a great place in the Winter---but so can the sunny South! |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 29 Jan 04 - 08:29 PM Thanks, Jed. Big J from J, I'll send you a set as soon as I get home from AK, round Feb 10th. Bill Staines didn't tell you EVERYTHING about that night, did he? Seamus |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson Date: 29 Jan 04 - 09:06 PM Bill is the embodiment of discretion itself! He told me nothing that would cause a good Irish boy to blush with embarrassment---or smug pride. Bill has become a friend from his frequent trips through our general area, and I have the privilege of being able to sit and be regaled by tales of folkdom's famous from the lips of one who knows so many. Have a great tour, and stay warm! |

Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: Alaska Mike Date: 29 Jan 04 - 10:29 PM I agree, its a fine CD. Filled with great singing, humorous Seamus-isms, and fabulous songs both new and old. I can't wait to see him perform his live show tomorrow night here in Anchorage. Although the temperature is cold, we always try to give Seamus our warmest reception. He is loved by his fans all across the great state of Alaska. Like the Northern Lights, Seamus always brightens Alaska when he comes for a visit. |

Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: JedMarum Date: 02 Feb 04 - 08:58 PM OK - so now I got myself into a jam! I thought I'd send a CD to "Big Jim from Jackson" for his show on KRCU. So I put one in the mail today, no note - I just figured I'd send him a Mudcat PM and let him know it's on the way ... and what do I discover?? Big Jim is a GUEST! I can't send him PMs!! So, no worries, I think, the KRCU website will have email contact info for their radio show hosts - but, it turns out that is not the case! So, GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson I wasn't clever enough to let you know what the CD's all about, and have no other way then telling you all this in public; I sent you a CD for your consideration for airplay on your station. I sent it to your personal address, because I hope you'll like the CD and I hope you'll want to play it at home. If you have any questions please send me an email via my website. Sorry for the public posting! All the best - Jed PS - If you do like the CD, I'll be passing through your part of the world a couple of times over the coming months. |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: JedMarum Date: 02 Feb 04 - 09:02 PM OOops! I forgot the Blicky to the website. Sorry Seamus to commmercialize your otherwise excellent thread! I feel like Janet Jackson or something .... |
Subject: RE: Review: Seamus Kennedy CD: On The Rocks From: GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson Date: 02 Feb 04 - 11:26 PM Jed, you can reach me through www.comments@krcu.org. Just state in the email that you are trying to reach me, and the station will forward it to me. Then I'll send you my email address. I tried to register on this darned Mudcat thing, but I got a message back that said my emil was already on file---but it wouldn't take the rest of my info! I will be most glad to give the CD a listen. I wont guarantee airplay, but there is an awfully good chance. I'll get back to you as soon as I receive it. Thanks. |
