Subject: BS: Introduction of Greenwich Mudcat Time
From: freda underhill
Date: 20 Mar 04 - 10:49 AM

What is Greenwich Mudcat Time (GMT)?

GMT has been established to aid worldwide virtual musical gatherings and is based on the rotation of the Earth. It was not until the Mudcat Discussion Forum started using GMT in the mid 2004s that GMT was adopted "for virtual use". And it was not until the late 2005s that GMT was adopted universally. At this time, the universal mudcat time zones were created along with the International Date Line. From 3rd March 2005, the US, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the British Isles adjusted their clocks so that all countries now run on a common universal time zone.

In this age of international travel, cross continental teleconferences and virtual sessions, it has become essential to acknowledge the universality of international business needs. It is no longer acceptable for one country to operate in one time zone, while another country is operating at a differing one. This sort of cross – time planning is medieval, and has been eliminated by the clever introduction of Greenwich Mudcat Time.

There have been some complaints from those living in the Northern hemispheres, that they now have to get up at 2.am in the morning to go to work. This adjustment has been made to ensure that Mudcatters in the Antipodes can talk online without having to disrupt their beauty sleep.

Those countries who remained out of GMT were subject to economic sanctions. Most have now recognised the economic advantages of operating on Greenwich Mudcat Time, and have implemented transition procedures for the New Time Order.
I know, you want to know how to convert GMT into your local time zone. Well, it goes like this:
During Daylight Savings Time, GMT is 4 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). So if the time is 0800 GMT, it is 4:00 a.m. in New York City and Miami and 1:00 a.m. in Los Angeles. During Standard Time, GMT is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). So, 1000 GMT corresponds to 5:00 a.m. in New York City and Miami and 2:00 a.m. in Los Angeles.
Please note that GMT may be listed as Zulu (Z) or Coordinated Universal Time (UTC

Freda, you have made one critical error in describing the Mudcat time system. Offical Mudcat Time (OMT) is defined as the time zone within which the Mudcat computer resides. This is the common and internationally accepted musical time zone. In fact, it is so uniformly accepted that it is referred to as Time Zone Uniform (U). The musical center of the world, New York City (if you don't think this is the musical center, ask anyone who lives there), is located in this zone, which is parochially known in the US as Eastern Time. Greenwich Time is located five time-zones east. These are zones Victor (V), Whiskey (W), X-Ray (X), Yankee (Y) and, as you very correctly state, Zulu (Z).

As we all know, Mudcat is a (mostly) benevolent dictatorship, run by Glorious Leader Max and his minions Pene Azul (Minister of Technology) and Joe Offer (Minister of Censorship). Taking advantage of the wonders of Internet communications, they are not all located within the Mudcat time zone. However, IMHO, the only way in which OMT could become GMT would be if our Glorious Leader were to agree to move across the pond, with his computer, a prospect as likely as a universally-acceptable definition of folk music or agreement upon the meaning of 'Celtic'. It is rumored that he actually likes American beer!

In fact, Mudcat Time is Greenwich Mean Time! It's just that the Greenwich referred to is Greenwich Village in New York City. And the term "Mean" has nothing to do with a line of longitude or anything like that. It has to do with the response one is apt to get when asking New Yorkers what time it is. "Ya wanna know what time it is? Go buy a fuckin' watch, dickhead!"

Greenwich, Connecticut is in the same time zone, but people there are nice, not mean, so it doesn't quite qualify.

I had a housemate for several years who lived on Hamster time. He was up around noon, perhaps two, and kept going until four or five in the morning. He worked on computers, and found a job at a local bank that suited his schedule perfectly. He didn't like me saying he kept hamster hours. But there was a similarity.
Incidentally, does anyone know where he is.

Where does this put us folks in The American West? Or the poor folks who live in what is/was called the Atlantic time zone? Or Alaskamike and Ebbie, one in Anchorage and one in Juneau? Or Mark Cohen, over there in Hawaii?

Geez, the Idaho Legion is sleeping in shifts now, those that don't sleep in their underwear or jay-bird nekkid. Do they also have to sleep upside down because of their position relative to Oz? But the most important question they have is, "how are we gonna know when the bars open?"

Rapaire: Ya don't have to know when the bars open if ya don't leave.

A question of cosmic importance: If we dick around with the time and stuff, will this change the solstices? Will this mess up the groundhog? On a selfish note, will I need my alarm clock anymore? And will Newfoundland still be off by a half hour?

Better yet, we will soon change our timekeeping to the metric system.
There will be 100 seconds in a minute and 100 minutes in an hour.
We can work out days, months, and years later, but soon our timekeeping will be as rational as our measurement of dimensions and volume.

There is an easier solution. If everybody just works one hour a day, and we work it so that UK works 1800 till 1900, then Australia could work 0700 to 0800, and the EST folks in the US could work 2400 to 0100. That way we'd all be at work at the same time, so we could talk real time. Now what we need is some clever bugger to work out the times for the rest of the world, and someone else to work out a suitable time for Spaw.

Greenwich Time is located five time-zones east.

Six time-zones east, as brucie so rightly points out. You forgot about the Newfoundland Standard Time zone (Military designation: P*), which is a half-hour between Atlantic Standard Time, and UTC-3 (Military designation: P).

I will grant that Newfies are a bit off, but I'm not sure that I want to give them their own time zone...halfazone, maybe. I will admit to screwing up earlier...I forgot that the zones count in the opposite direction going West. The four zones that cover the North American continent are still Romeo, Sierra, Tango and Uniform, but they go in the other direction: New York is Romeo and San Francisco is Uniform. The Canadian Maritimes are on Quebec, Alaska (except for the Western Alutians) on is Victor, and Hawaii (and the rest of the Alutians) is on Whiskey.

Well, the good news is you don't have to. They already have one. It's called Newfoundland Standard Time.

I was under the impression that the "Newfies" were considerably more than a few hours off.... more like several decades...

I'd say you're right about that, LtS. Except while I agree with you that they are most certainly ahead of the rest of the world in most respects, I don't know if I would agree that it is as much as several decades ;-)

Date
The international standard date notation is
YYYY-MM-DD
where YYYY is the year in the usual Gregorian calendar (YaYaYas Yobbos Year), MM is the month of the year between 01 (January) and 12 (December) (Mudcat Mean month), and DD is the day of the month between 01 and 31 (Doowahdiddy Daze). For example, the fourth day of February in the year 1995 is written in the standard notation as
1995-02-04
Other commonly used notations are e.g. 2/4/95, 4/2/95, 95/2/4, 4.2.1995, 04-FEB-1995, 4-February-1995, and many more. Especially the first two examples are dangerous, because as both are used quite often in the U.S. and in Great Britain and both can not be distinguished, it is unclear whether 2/4/95 means 1995-04-02 or 1995-02-04. The date notation 2/4/5 has at least six reasonable interpretations (assuming that only the twentieth and twenty-first century are reasonable candidates in our life time).
Advantages of the Mudcat standard date notation compared to other commonly used variants mean:

- There will be only one date, which will exist at the same time all over the planet
- easily readable and writeable by software (no 'JAN', 'FEB', ... table necessary)
- easily comparable and sortable with a trivial string comparison
- language independent
- the notation is short and has constant length, which makes both keyboard data entry and table layout easier

Mudcatters are invited into the chat room tonight at Mudcat Mean standard time 9.30 pm to discuss the implementation plan of Mudcat time. If unsure as to which particular 9.30 operating on the planet today, that's 9.30, Daylight Savings Time, Australia/Mudcat mean time.

See you in the chat
