Tam says; "First off, massive thanks have to go out to Jennifer Thorp, on whose groundbreaking John Tams .info website, these lyrics were to be originally found."

Written about 1987, this song first featured in the play "Cider with Rosie" and was also used in Bill Bryden's production of "The Big Picnic" and the film "The Raggedy Rawney".

(Verses have since been included in War Horse.)

Her other verses are accurate, so I would put some confidence in these too. But there is some doubt about 'stand to/true'.

Joe - why did you change from "The gentry in their finery " to "in their fine array" between the two versions you posted above? - I know what tends to get sung in follk clubs, but what on earth is a "fine array"? (Or is it just because it's what some bloke called Tams sings? - what would he know??)

This song first featured in the play "Cider with Rosie" in 1985 at the Sheffield Crucible, directed by a theatre trainee called Stephen Daldrey - his Billy Elliot musical and film were much later.

It was also used in Bill Bryden's production of "The Big Picnic" and the film "The Raggedy Rawney" and is now in "War Horse".

Dave Auld sings "up where the larks do go", every time! But it puts the rhyme scheme out. Not that it makes much difference to the overall shape of the universe. And Tina Auld is Dave's wife, and I don't think they have sung with John Tams. Not yet, anyway!

Yes Joe, John has a beard and does the singing. Roy's version is the one we usually sing and I think is more singable for a crowd. But you can't beat an original sung by an original!

Now, now, now...I bypassed the complicated change process and sneaked in a "t" and a "y" onto "he." I hope that works.

Robyn, I looked all over for a John Tams recording. Thank you very much for finding it. Am I correct in thinking that John Tams is the bearded guy with the guitar, and Barry Coope is on the keyboard? This recording is a real treat.

In my research, I have found that a Roy Bailey recording is usually a very accurate representation of the songwriter's version of a song. Roy seems to do consistently excellent work. Am I correct in that perception?

...and I still believe that Dave Webber is infallible. Only Ani Fentiman believes otherwise - and she seems to remind him of that frequently.

Jo - I really think it's John Tams who needs the apology. This version represents him as the author of a sexist lyric - which is entirely unfair. Is there no way you can ask the publishers to change it?

Thanks for the information, Georgina. That chapter's closed now, so I may not be able to change it. The lyrics I used were from the Beggar's Velvet album. I had thought Dave Webber to be infallible, so I went with his version.

I think a lot of people will have learned this from the singing of Roy Bailey. It's on his album, What You Do With What You've Got. That track was recorded live at a folk club in 1991.

I'm basing this on the Beggars Velvet recording and on this Dave Auld, Tina-John Tams recording. So, is that John Tams singing with Tina, or is Tina's name Tina-John Tams? Who's Tina? I found it on another page - the other singer is Tina Auld, and John Tams is mentioned only as writer. -Joe-

I made an ABC from what I hear myself and others sing - there may be the odd note slightly different, but that is substantially the tune.

I marked it as 120, but that should be 1/4=120 not 1/8=120. I just played it in ABC MIDIfier at 240 and the speed sounded right. ABC2Wins tempi sre different to everybody else's

Snuffy, where'd you get your tune? It's close, but not quite the same as what we sing, so I was wondering if it was your version, or if someone's transcribed it. The note from Georgina above, seems to indicate that it isn't what Tams wrote.

Of course, the tune I use mutated from Beggar's Velvet, where the song is done in four part harmony, and the tune is difficult to differentiate from the harmonies.

The number of threads on this song are few enough that indexing is still possible, but some would require pages. A staff of dedicated volunteers would be necessary to weed out unnecessary lyrics duplication (and unfounded repetitious speculation) from those who don't check thoroughly first (I include myself among the offenders).

This is always done on the last night of Whitby Folk week in the Tap and Spile. We climb onto chairs and link hands for the choruses and sit for verses. Must admit the climb up gets harder each year and I resorted to squatting for the verses last time!

That verse, and the third above, were added later (though both by Tams himself). As Q says, it has been dealt with before. I quite like the mondegreen image of the rich stealing the flour (!) but not quite so much as my own picture of the toast going free (Free the Toast! The Toast is innocent!) ... I expect I've mentioned that before, though.
