This is an asinine question without a definiton of terms. In this country (the US) the word Liberal has been stolen from its roots and turned to mean 'bleeding-heart pinko airhead', but this usage is only popular with neoconservatives who tend to be radical fascists. Doh!!

A thread on The Origins of Liberal Thought gives some ionsight into the real meaning and background of the term. From this better informed perspective the answer to this somewhat fatuous query is "No".

Who needs labels, anyway? (Or "rubbish" threads, for that matter.) Labels don't contribute to the discourse process of finding a greater truth. They only divide people and distract from the points that need to be argued. Do you support/oppose "X" or "Y" and what are your reasons is what matters.

It seesm to me that "far left" in the USA generally means a set of views that would be slightly to the left of centre in the UK. Roughly the political position that we would be likely to call "Liberal" too.

In fact, I think that quite a good chunk of our Conservative Party would be seen as "far left liberals", on the other side of the Atlantic.

In the U. S. of A., the Democratic Party (at one time, generally considered to be the liberal party) is now at that point on the continuum that was once occupied by Eisenhower Republicans. The Republicans, in turn (at one time generally considered to be conservatives), are now so far to the right that Darth Vader has resigned from the party.

I think Martin likes playing the role, in cyberspace, but really is fairly moderate. I base this guess on people I know who are pretty sensible but like to talk trash.

Too far left for me is impractically idealistic, or backseat driving without the strength of character to actually be responsible. Too far left is when you'd rather be right than do anyone any good.

I get so confused when you talk about liberals. Please make the distinction between the small "l" liberals and the large "Liberal Party" in Canada. The large "L" Liberal Party in B.C. isn't liberal at all.
