Subject: lyrics for Mockingbird lullaby
From: Lee Thomson
Date: 12 Sep 98 - 09:30 PM

I have been desperately and randomly making up verses to the Mockingbird lullaby to satisfy my 4 yr old daughter's requests for it, but would like help either from scratch or from memory bridging some of the gaps:

Hush little baby don't say a word Momma's gonna buy you a mocking bird If that mockingbird don't sing Momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring If that diamond ring is brass [glass] Momma's gonna buy you a looking glass If that looking glass gets broke Momma's gonna buy you a billy goat If that billy goat won't [exactly what do billy goats do??] Momma's gonna buy you a ...

[somewhere in here are: Momma's gonna buy you a dog named Rover If that dog named Rover don't bark Momma's gonna buy you a horse and cart If that horse and cart turn over Momma's gonna buy you a dog named Rover ... and I get caught in a loop]

and it ends

and if that something something something ...own you'll still be the prettiest little baby in town

I know James Taylor and Carly Simon recorded a pretty raucous version of it in my youth, but even that didn't have all the verses I remembered from my parents' folk song nights.

Your help is greatly appreciated -

Lee Thomson

I don't know why you expect to be different from all the other parents, we all desparately make up words.

I use ... if that Billy Goat runs away, daddy's going to get you a horse and sleigh.

If that horse and sleigh turns over daddy's going to get you a dog named Rover.

If that dog named Rover won't bark, daddy will get you a meadowlark.

then I start getting desparate.

There was a parody done by the Brothers In Law in the sixties called 'Lullaby to a Spoined Brat' does anyone have the lyrics to that?

Hush, Little Baby

Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's going to buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's going to buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's going to buy you a billy goat.
And if that billy goat won't pull,
Mama's going to buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's going to buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's going to buy you a horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

It's in the DT. Search for [gonna buy you] Since both little and mockingbird have contractions, it didn't come up for either [hush little baby] or mockingbird. The moral of this story is to search for more than one phrase.

When I first learned the song, from a Kentucky
grandmother back a half-century or so ago, the last
line was:
"you'll be the sweetest li'l baby in town."
rather than
"you'll still be the sweetest l'il baby in town."

Sort of a recognition of a string of improbabilities.

Hush little baby, don't say a word
Pappa's gonna buy you a mockingbird

If that mockingbird don't sing
Pappa's gonna buy you a diamond ring

If that diamond ring turns brass
Pappa's gonna buy you a lookin' glass

If that lookin' glass gets broke
Pappa's gonna buy you billy goat

Bo Diddley Bo Diddley have you heard
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird
If that mockingbird don't sing
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring don't shine
Papa's gonna take it to a private eye
If that private eye can't see
He'd better not take no ring from me

Hey Bo Diddley (echo)
Hey Bo Diddley (echo)

...OR...

Hush little baby don't say a word
Daddy's gonna buy you a Thunderbird
If you don't like that type of car
Your daddy's gonna buy you a Jay-goo-arr
If that Jay-goo-arr won't do
Daddy's gonna buy you a Ferrari, too
If that Ferrari isn't your choice
Daddy's gonna buy you a new Rolls Royce
If you don't like the Rolls, we'd better have a talk
'Cause after that baby you can damn well walk

The first one is from my days as a blues musician, the second is from my childhood.

I can't remember how it goes because it has been replaced with a military jody (could this be evidence of brain washing? OO RAH)

Bo Diddly, Bo diddly have you heard
Papa gonna buy you a mockingbird
If that mockingbird don't sing
Papa gonna buy you a diamond ring
If that diamond ring don't shine
Papa gonna bring it to the five a dime
If that five and dime don't take it back
Papa gonna put it in a gunny sack
Papa gonna hang it from the highest tree
For all the world to see
I said papa now don't blame me
I'm gonna join the USMC (or U.S. Army)...

It then would segue into the next jody

If that mockingbird don't sing, Papa's gonna buy me a diamond ring.

If that diamond ring don't shine, Papa's gonna buy me a bottle of wine.

If that bottle of wine gets broke, Papa's gonna buy me a billy goat.

If that billy goat runs away, Papa's gonna spank my boomsie-ay,

If my boomsie-ay gets sore, Papa's gonna buy me a grocery store.

If that grocery store burns down, Papa's gonna buy me an evening gown.

If that evening gown don't fit, Papa's gonna say "I quit! I quit!"

....it's a different tune from the regular 'Mockingbird'. so so so so so so la, so so so so la do do (if that helps).

In respect of 'Hush Little Baby', I recalled that I kept a copy of the following posting from one the newsgroups. Unfortunately, I did not record the name of the poster. I found it quite interesting and perhaps you will too. I hope the formatting comes out okay - I tinkered with it as much as I could:

Query:
I'm looking for the lyrics that has "Hush little baby, don't you cry/ 's gonna sing you a lullaby". I think the song has been known colloquially as 'the Mockingbird song', although I'm not sure. I'm looking for the lyrics that have: "Hush little baby, don't you cry/ 's gonna sing you a lullaby". I think the song has been known colloquially as 'the Mockingbird song', although I'm not sure.

Answer:
I just happen to be working on that very song:

The lyric is built around the ethnic folk song "Hush Little Baby" (aka "Mockingbird Song"):

Hush little baby don't say a word,
Papa's gonna buy you a mocking bird
If that mocking bird don't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring is brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass.

If that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat,
If that billy goat won't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa gonna buy you a dog named Rover.

If that dog named Rover won't bark,
Papa's gonna buy you a horse and cart,
If that horse and cart fall down,

You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
This song is the basis of a children's "Hambone" song. Here's part of the lyric of the Bell Sister's version, which charted in 1952:
Hambone, hambone<
Where you been?
Round the world and I'm goin' again
What you gonna do when you come back?
Take a little walk by the railroad track
Hambone

Hambone, hambone
Have you heard?
Papa's gonna buy me a mocking bird
And if that mocking bird don't sing
Papa's gonna buy me a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring don't shine
Papa's gonna take it to the five and dime
Hambone.

The tune is a little like a popular army drill chant (which have the same kind of couplet structure). "The Hambone" is accompanied by "bones" or by body slapping. "Hambone" songs were seen early in the minstrel tradition. I guess that "knick, knack, paddywack, give a dog a bone" is another. One children's game is to see who can play the song the fastest.
The Lomaxes collected "Hush Little Baby" in the forties. J.C. Burris, who worked with Sonny Terry, had a version which Pete Seeger seems to have popularised (indeed, a 1964 Nina Simone album credits the song to Pete Seeger).

The song was reworked by Bo Diddley for the "first" rock 'n' roll song, in which the famous Bo Diddley beat emerged:

Bo Diddley bought his babe a diamond ring,
I that diamond ring don't shine
He gonna take it to a private eye,
If that private eye can't see
He'd better not take the ring from me

Bo Diddley caught a nanny goat,
To make his pretty baby a Sunday coat
Bo Diddley caught a bear cat,
To make his pretty baby a Sunday hat

Mojo come to my house, ya black cat bone,
Take my baby away from home
Ugly ole mojo, where ya bin,
Up your house, and gone again
Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley have you heard?
My pretty baby says she was a bird

The tune in this case is folk blues, in the Leadbelly open chord tradition. Pentatonic and little syncopation.
"Bo Diddley" influenced many rock songs, but that's another topic...

Cheers, Stewie.

The song goes back to at least 1884. In the Levy Collection, see "Hush Little Baby, Don't You Cry!"
Cho: Hush Little baby, don't you cry,
Or you'll be an angel bye and bye...
Written by F. Belasco (M. H. Rosenfeld), pub. W. F. Shaw, 1884. A comic blackface song originally.

Cold war version:-

Hush little baby, don't you fear,
The bomb's not going to go off this year
They all went off last year, you see,
But daddy had built a shelter for me

In that shelter we had to hide
While all the bombs went off outside,
Me and your daddy we came out then
And started the human race again

When you were born it was very clear
There was Strontium 90 in the atmosphere,
But don't you let that get you down.....

You're still the only two headed baby in town!

Commections to my posts- The Wolf Collection gives lyrics, but no audio. The Hays song had a different tune from the one used by Belasco (Rosenfeld).

Hi Laura,

here´s one of the popular versions of this song. The last verse I wrote myself in 1998 just to add something that fits to the behaviour of people just like me ;(

By the way - actually these words are took from an american version of the song, you´ll find here some scottish-like phrases/words just like tae (=to). Don´t mind.

**********************************************
Hush Little Baby
(An Anglo-American lullaby, dating back to the early American frontier days.
Note: Daddy´s may be substituted with Mammy´s in the song; it all depends on who´s going to pay up for the entire menagerie purchased.)

Hush, little baby, don´t say a word
Daddy´s goin´ tae buy ye a mockin´ bird
If that mockin´ bird don´t sing
Daddy´s goin´ tae buy ye a diamond ring

If that diamond ring turns brass
Daddy´s goin´ tae buy ye a lookin´ glass
If that lookin´ glass gets broke
Daddy´s goin´ tae buy ye a billy goat

If that billy goat won´t pull
Daddy´ s goin´ tae buy ye a cart and bull
If that cart and bull turn over
Daddy´s goin´ tae buy ye a dog named Rover

If that dog named Rover don´t bark
Daddy´s goin´ tae buy ye a horse and cart
If that horse and cart fall down
Ye´ re still the sweetest little girl (boy) in town

Hush, little baby, stop yer cries
Daddy´ s goin´ tae buy ye a paradies
A paradies fu´ o´ miracles
Marvelous toys and sweet candies
**********************************************

Apart from the parodies, it is still a good song. The Flying Pickets did a fantastic a capella, souped-up version of this with a female singer. I saw it on tv. Wonderful! I just did a quick check on the track listings of their CD's and I don't think it made it onto CD.

My mother's parody of this lullaby is in a class by itself. I would hope that people wouldn't take it too seriously. However, I'm sure many a babysitter would enjoy humming this version of the ditty. Rosalie Sorrel used to refer to this kind of song as a "Hostile Baby Song":

Words by Dahlov Ipcar, Circa 1970
Parody of "Hush Little Baby"

Hush, Little Baby-3

Hush, little baby, don't you cry;
Mama's gonna pock you in the eye;
If that pock in the eye don't hurt,
Mama's gonna rub your face in the dirt;

If that dirt don't make you sore,
Mama's gonna wallop you some more;
If that walloping don't make you sick,
Mama's gonna whack you with a stick.

If that whacking don't break some bones,
Mama's gonna hit you with some stones;
If those stones don't hurt you none,
Mama's gonna shoot you with a gun.

If that gun don't kill you dead,
Mama's gonna bash you in the head;
If that bashin' seems like fun,
You're sure a tough little son-of-a-gun!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hi there,

The lyrics are:

Hush, little baby, don't say a word.
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring

And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass

And if that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat

And if that billy goat won't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull

And if that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's going to buy you a dog named Rover.

And if that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's going to buy you a horse and cart.

And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

If that billy goat gets bony,
papa's gonna buy you a cart and pony.

If that pony runs away,
papa's gonna buy you another some day.
[end of song]

If you truly are singing a little one to sleep, start over, softer than before. Repeat till successful.

OK, based on what I've read here, I've compiled the definitive version that I will use-- without the confusing carts and animals and their various mishaps. I am all for creativity and organic lyrics, but usually when I am singing this song, I do not have the energy for creativity-- I need mindless poetry.

Hush, little baby. Don't say a word.
Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird.

If that mockingbird won't sing,
Daddy's gonna buy you a diamond ring.

If that diamond ring turns brass,
Daddy's gonna buy you a looking glass.

If that looking glass gets broke,
Daddy's gonna buy you a billy goat.

If that billy goat runs away,
Daddy's gonna by you a horse and sleigh.

If that horse and sleigh turn over,
Daddy's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.

If that dog named Rover won't bark,
Daddy's going to buy you a pony and cart.

If that pony and cart fall down,
you'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

Now, I realize the lyrics are repetitive and meaningless, but they have been doing the job for a long, long time. Who am I to innovate?

And if that goat breaks from his cage,
Daddy's gonna go through middle age.
And if that crisis goes too far,
Daddy's gonna buy a red sports car.
And if that sports car really vrooms,
Daddy's gonna date a girl with big bazooms.
And if that girl informs your mom,
Momma's gonna make a homemade bomb.
And if that little bomb goes boom,
Daddy's gonna take a trip to the moon.
And if that Dad never comes back down,
You'll still be the sweetest little girl in town.

I heard a great version of Hush Little Baby, Don't... on the Prairie Home Companion about a year ago. I don't remember the woman's name, but I think I'm fairly close to having the words accurate. She sang something like:

Hush little baby, Don't you cry,
Papa's(Mama's) gonna bake you a rhubarb pie.
If that rhubarb pie's too sour,
Papa's gonna pick you a pretty flower.
And if that pretty flower wilts,
Papa's gonna build you a pair of stilts.
And if that pair of stilts aren't steady,
Papa's gonna whip you up a bowl of spaghetti.
And if that spaghetti's not al dente,
Papa's gonna give you a horn of plenty.
And if that horn of plenty has the wrong fruit,
Papa's gonna buy you a three piece suit.
And if that suit's the wrong material,
Papa's gonna pour you a bowl of cereal.
And if that cereal's not low carb,
Papa's gonna pick you some more rhubarb.
And if that rhubarb all turns brown,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

Does the name Inga Swearingen sound familiar?

This is the version I sing to my daughter:

Hush now baby don't say a word
Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
Momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring turns to brass
Momma's gonna buy you a looking glass
And if that looking glass gets broke
Momma's gonna buy you a billy goat
And if that billy goat runs away
Momma's gonna start again the very next day.

It's probably wrong but I grew up knowing it went like this

Hush little baby don't say a word
Cause daddy's gonna buy you a mocking bird
And if that mocking bird don't sing
Then daddy's gonna but you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring is made out of brass
Then daddy's gonna buy you a looking glass
And if that looking glass don't shine
Then daddy's gonna buy you a valentine
And if that valentine not red
Daddy's gonna buy you a brass bed
And if that brass bed gets broke
Then daddy's gonna buy you a Billy goat
And if that Billy goat falls down
Well you're still the greatest baby in this whole darn town
So hush little baby if you don't
Daddy's gonna buy you a mocking bird.

My dad would sing his version to me every night, this is it:

Hush little baby don't say a word
Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird

And if that mockingbird don't sing
Daddy's gonna buy you a diamond ring

If that diamond ring is glass
Daddy's going to buy you a looking-glass

And if that looking glass should crack
Daddy's gonna buy you a jumping jack

And if that jumping jack won't hop
Daddy's going to buy you a lollipop

And when that lollipop is gone
Daddy's going to buy you another one

And if that lollipop is all eaten up
Daddy's going to buy you a real live pup

And if that real live pup won't bark
Daddy's going to buy you a horse and cart

And if that horse and cart should fall down
You're still the prettiest girl around

Just heard the Prairie Home Companion's show with Inga Swearingen. Corrected the lyrics from above.

Hush little baby, Don't you cry,
Mama gonna make you some rhubarb pie.
If that rhubarb pie's too sour,
Mama's gonna pick you a wild flower.
And if that wild flower wilts,
Mama's gonna buy you a pair of stilts.
And if that pair of stilts ain't steady,
Mama's gonna make you a bowl of spaghetti.
Scatting...

And if that spaghetti's not al dente,
Mama's gonna buy you a horn of plenty.
And if that horn doesn't have the wrong fruit,
Mama's gonna buy you a two piece suit.
And if that suit's not the right material,
Mama's gonna feed you a bowl of cereal.
And if that cereal's not low carb,
Mama's gonna feed you some more rhubarb.
So hush little baby don't you moan.
It's been 30 years on the Prairie Home.
Some scatting….

Such a sweet, sweet version. Also can be heard at Prairie Home Companion's May 15 2004 show archive

Amazing that in a six-year-old thread, nobody has mentioned the Charlie and Inez Foxx version, later covered by James Taylor and Carly Simon, though it is discussed in a different thread.

Of course there is also the southern appalachian "adult" version with a different tune - Say Darlin Say - which starts off with many of the same verses but phrased differently ("Hush little darlin don't say a word, I'm gonna buy you a mocking bird" etc) - and then progresses into a couple of verses about getting married and lying drunk in the shade

Dad always sang it like dis:

Hush, little baby, don't say a word.
Papa's gonna buy you a hummingbird.
If that hummingbird should fly,
Papa's gonna show you the evening sky.
As the nighttime shadows fall,
Papa's gonna show you the crickets' call.
As their song drifts from afar,
Papa's gonna show you a shooting star.
As that star fades from view,
Papa's gonna read a book to you.
When that story has been read,
Papa's gonna buy you a warm bedspread.
When that quilt begins to wear,
Papa's gonna buy you a teddy bear.
When that teddy bear's been hugged,
Papa's gonna hunt you a lightnin' bug.
And if that lightnin' bug won't glow,
Papa's gonna play on his old banjo.
And if that banjo's outta tune,
Papa's gonna show you the harvest moon.
As the moon drifts from the skyyyyyyyyyyyy.................
Papa's gonna sing you a lullaby.
