Mike and I are seriously considering paying a visit to the ancient city of Kingston upon Hull tomorrow evening to find out for ourselves if the Folk Club is indeed excellent (or rubbish). Are we likely to be the only ones there or will we have to fight our way past the locals to get a spot?

If ya want a proper club, you should have asked. The White Horse Club (Nellies) in Beverley on Monday nights is excellent. Cottingham's not bad (Wednesdays), and there are two in Driffield (thursdays). There are also several regular sessions in the area.

From what I can gather, jOhn's gathering has it's moments, mind. Not been myself so I'm not qualified to comment! Think they've had some good nights.

Take Care, Hull along with Keighley & Halifax still eat missionaries! The final served form varies. Some appear as a curry, some as a sort of Irish Stew (which a Mr Tom Lehrer seemed to get to know about) and some as a sort of hot pot (better known as a Lancashire Hot Pot when we get an interloper from that neck of the woods). Cooked properly:- very tasty, very savoury!

Judging by some of the posts on this thread, the citizens of the People's Independent Socialist Republic of East Yorkshire seem neither united, nor particularly welcoming to those who come bearing musical gifts! I notice they've imposed an outrageous charge for crossing the Humber White Elephant (oops, sorry, I meant 'Bridge') which must be designed to keep us out and them in - perhaps I'll stay in Yellowbelly Country and pass the evening watching Big Brother. I saw about 5 minutes of this stupid programme on saturday night, never seen so much crap, if i had a telly licence, i would be asking for a refund!

I noticed the hare dresser was from Ull - I think he's a good reason to stay on our side o' th'umber! :-) Until next month anyway!

My granny used to dress hares in a stew-pan, and very nice they tasted too, but a bit tougher than a rabbit.

Yes, Kitten, I haven't really watched the show, but that kitten one seems very odd, [didn't she used to be a bloke?], apparently her dad is a Chief executive at Hull City Council.

That Daniel [the hare dresser] is the bookies favourite to win, cuurent odds are 5/1, i won't be betting though, as i'm skint, and I don't really understand the show, and never bet on things that i don't know anything about.

I don't quite understand the concept of Big Brother... I'm meant to want to sit & watch some people I don't know sit around in a house and (as far as I can tell) talk rubbish. From the conversations I hear, people seem mostly interested in whether they'll have sex or not, and if so, in what peculiar combinations. Which seems a strange thing to televise, to poor little old-fashioned me.
I suppose it might have been interesting as an experiment in social dynamics, if the people they chose were halfway normal, but (again, as far as I can tell) they appear to pick a variety of nutcases, then reward them for behaving strangely. Which makes it hard to learn anything from it. I feel a bit sorry for these people, really, that they have such low self-esteem that this is what they want to do with their lives.
It's all very odd, and it seems to me that a visit to a folk club would be very much more rewarding...

But then again, maybe I'm missing some vitally important point about this show that's not yet apparent to me...?

Couldn't agree more! My statement about watching Big Brother and Nadia the Trans-sexual was a little jest - two smiley faces gave it away!! I was going to go to jOhn's club in 'Ull tonight but it seems to be 'off' !! Oh well, Bill Whaley and Dave Flethcher at Market Rasen Folk Club tomorrow night - magic, you should join us!

I don't think it's low self-esteem that makes the participants enter Big Brother - in fact I reckon it's exactly the opposite, it's that they've all got their heads firmly up their own arses, plus the lure of a hundred-or-so grand for doing precisely sod-all!

greg-I heard that kitten went to a £12,000 a year private school, and her dad bought her a house when she was studying at hull university, apparently she told the other housemates that she was poor and homeless and had to be a prostitute to survive, but thats all made up crap, her dad has been in the papers saying that she is a lying sack of shit etc, and apparently he is trying to get her taken out of the house as she is a bit mental.

i don't feel sorry for them at all, they are a bunch of show offs, with nothing better to do.

Oh, well, maybe you're right! I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, having not actually ever watched the thing.
No, I lie... last year, it came on one morning as we were packing the bike's saddlebags, on the way out, and I was busy enough not to turn it off. It took a while for me to register what it was, then try to figure out what the point was, as all I was seeing was a lot of immobile lumps under duvets. Then, just as we were leaving, someone got out of bed and woke up someone else.
And at that point we went out, so I supose it could have been really thrilling & educational after that... but if so, we missed it. But somehow I don't feel like we missed much! Yet people around me seem fascinated, much in the same way as with the Beckham family, and wil soap operas. I'm sure I must be missing something...

Such is life!

No Tracey, it's neither thrilling nor educational and you're not missing anything, as I said earlier I was tring to be ironic! :0) It's a contrived, staged pile o'pants IMOH.

However, Bill 'n' Dave at Market Rasen Folk Club tomorrow will be thrilling and educational, and they'll be more than ably supported by Cara (a fine 3-piece band worth at least £57 a performance) and Lucy Wright & Paul Smith (excellent up-and-coming young duo from Gainsborough). Pack yer saddlebags, get on yer bike and come see them (and bring yer mates too!).

Glad I'm not going mad, and BB is rubbish after all!

The gig in Market Rasen sounds great, Johnny, but I'm not sure we'd get there in time, coming from London after work tonight! Plus, my beloved (who'd be the one steering the bike) isn't a great fan of folk music - The Eagles, Boston & Status Quo are more his line. Though we do agree on bluesy rock, like George Thorogood & such. Hope you have a great time, though.

And the world doesn't end at Watford Gap, there are roads beyond there, but I guess Lincs is just a bit far for a Friday night! :0)
