Apparently, Americans didn't love their Rayguns THAT much...less than 21 million viewers watched the state funeral across ALL the stations, both cable and networks. More people watched the NBA finals and the American Idol season finale. 21 million is about average for a West Wing program.

Around 35 million watched the California service on cable and network, much less than watched the last State of the Union address, which came in at 43.4 million, and the Academy Awards, which beat the State of the Union at 43.5 million.

So much for the "most beloved" and "most popular" and "greatest" president, eh?

Trolling, GUEST? As little as I cared for the guy, I watched bits and pieces of the ceremonies when I was in the house. But it was a funeral, after all. Your comparisons are pointless, really. Why not go duke it out on an existing thread rather than start another one?

Joe Offer would do well to tack this onto one of the existing threads.

On Friday, I had my friend Cecilia's birthday present all set to mail. I put it in a plastic bag, and took it downtown to the Post Office, which I found was closed in memory of Reagan. Of all the stupid things to do!
The man planned his own funeral, that was bad enough. He insisted on being treated like departed royalty. That was worse.
Then they go and shut down all the federal offices, as though he was still president. That was just plain nauseating.

No, not trolling SRS. What about the opening post makes you jump to that conclusion?

I'm just sharing a bit of information I thought people might like to see, considering how popular the threads on Reagan have been in the last week.

Yes, I could have posted this to another Reagan thread, but I have a dial up, so I don't go into threads that go over 75 or so posts usually. I think it would be great if Joe Offer or one of the clones would link this thread to the others, as I expect they will.

Nice talking to you, SRS.

Learn how to use the Mudcat, GUEST. Any thread over 50 posts is automatically split up. Just click on the blue clicky thing to the right of the name of the thread. And if that's too much for your dial up to handle, click on the "d" to the right of that. It'll list the posts in decending order.

You'd know that if you bothered to read the basic information on using the Mudcat, but hey, you're too busy talking about the fact that not a lot of people want to watch a funeral on tv in the middle of the flippin' day.

By the way - don't expect much respect around here when posting as a nameless GUEST. Especially posting to the BS threads. Most of the regulars have had to deal with too much crap from them over the years.

Otherwise - Welcome! Have a nice day!

I found it all tiresome too Lady Jean, but let's be fair now. All ex-presidents get the option of having a state funeral, just like the sitting president does, and Reagan simply chose to exercise his option in that regard. And the closing of federal and state offices is also normal for this sort of thing. It wasn't just for Reagan. It will happen when all the other ex-prez funerals happen too.

I also don't begrudge him and his wife planning his funeral in advance. Many people do just that, and I think it is fine, especially considering it was going to be a state funeral. I'm sure the Fords, the Carters, the elder Bushes, and the Clintons have their state funerals planned too. It isn't one of those things you leave to the last minute, and just go with the undertaker your uncle recommends!

I do hope he is enjoying his time in hell, as much as I enjoy the thought of him rotting there, though.

I do know about that feature Blackcatter, I just choose not to use it, mainly because by 50 or so posts, everyone is already repeating what someone else said.

Now, back to the topic at hand...I found it interesting that the actual ratings numbers told a totally different story than the one being hawked, especially on the cable news shows, last week.

Same sort of disconnect from reality that we've come to expect from the lying sacks o' shite in White House and their parrot pundits, though.

Depending on how you look at it LadyJean, finding the post office closed on that particular day might be considered a fitting memorial for Reagan. One of his hobby-horses was eliminating government services to the public.

Guest, I don't doubt that the week-long deification of Reagan was "a ratings bust." I think most anything that dominates the airwaves with such redundancy day after day on channel after channel induces lots of us to turn off the TV.

But this is one case where I don't think it was really about ratings. It was about capitalizing on Reagan's long-expected passing to trumpet his "great legacy" and pimp for Dubya as he is painted as the heir to that legacy.

It was Regan who was instrumental in deregulating the public airways, and the "Regan mourning" week was a prime example of where that can lead.

And, as Garrison Keilor said on his program this past weekend--we surely lost something important this past week---and the voice imitating Schwartzeneger said---Smarty Jones lost the Triple Crown---and I bet on him---so sad.

Better yet---an old Tom Paxton piece where Reagan has decided that global warming must be blamed on trees---all that CO2 they emit. Damned trees. Better drive around the old ranch chopping them down for the photo ops.

Seriously, I have to admit that his son---from the brief parts of his eulogy I read (Ron) put some of this into perspective and slapped the Dubya people and him down a bit.

Good thing is that this fiasco at great tax payer expense is over.   Now, will the Reagan family subsidize other people's funerals?

Well, I think most people were turned off by all the pre-funeral hype. I mean, watching a danged herse drive at 5 mph for two hours straigt was a tad on the overkill side... I think folks just got bored with the coverage and, guess what. Good! The Republican media pulled out all the stops and bored the heck out of America. A major backfiring....

Eat yer heart out Michael Powell!!! And Rupert Murdock and Mickey Mouse... You guys screwed yourselves...

How about those bumper stickers that say GOp -- God's Own Party

??

I think they screwed themselves on that one, too.
