Subject: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Sorcha Date: 29 Jul 04 - 08:33 PM Well, it's not BS as far as I'm concerned, but it's not music either. It looks like I have the dubious honour of getting to have neruosurgery on my neck AND an 'arachnoid cyst' removed from my lower cerebellum (brain). This is a congential cyst and filled with liquid on the base of my brain in back. I've had it since I was born. The Good News is that if this kind of cyst is going to act up, it usually does it in early childhood, but I have had neck problems all my life. They want to remove it because liquid filled cysts are unstable and it could grow, move, rupture, etc. going straight to the brain stem/medulla. It 'might' be why I have always had neck pain. The holes in the cervical vertabrae are closing up from calcium and pinching the nerves...mostly the left ulnar which controls the left arm and hand. Hard to fiddle around when your left hand goes numb and there is a muscle spasm as hard as bone in the end of the deltoid muscle. I also have one disc protruding and bone spurs on the neck vertabrae. I don't see the neurosurgeon until Aug. 17 and I WILL get a 2nd opinon, so I have no idea when the surgery will be. Pain killers won't help because it's nerve pain, and yes, I have been doing chiropractic. He is the one who reccomended the MRI because it wasn't helping. He, as well as my medical Dr. has seen the MRI results and both agree that surgery is probably the only option for this problem. Chiro does help, but the relief is only for about 12 hrs and I can't be in there every day. Bluntly, I'm scared. Messing with my spinal cord and brain surgery do NOT sound fun at all. I know that great advances have been made in neurosurgery in the last few years, but I'm still scared. And in pain. Can't play fiddle for very long. The healing process for this kind of surgery is so individual that it scares me too. I am told that I 'probably' will regain 'most' function and will 'probably' be able to play again after 6-8 weeks. It's the 'probably' that scares me. Who am I if I can't fiddle around? At least we now know why I'm crazy. Yes, I do have a brain,(have CT scans and MRI to prove it) but I have a cyst in it! LOL Thanks for thinking of me.......I'll show Mr how this thing works so he can keep you posted after the surgery, whenever that is. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Micca Date: 29 Jul 04 - 08:47 PM Well, You know we are pulling for, and with you on this, mate, I wont say Good luck, because Luck will play no part in this, it will be all pure skill on the Drs part, and you will be fine in no time at all, best wishes anyway, and I ( and the many friends you have made over this side of the pond)will be thinking of you and praying (or what ever they do in these situations)for you, Micca |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Rapparee Date: 29 Jul 04 - 09:03 PM Aw, SHIT! First you run off to the UK with Kendall and now you go and get sick too. What is this (as if I couldn't guess)? If you've got a good doctor, one you can trust, trust him or her. I know everyone here will be sending them positive rays Wyomingward. As for fiddlin' around -- I think you will if you want to. You might have to dig for it, you might have to work harder than you've ever worked on anything ever before. But I've known people who've been told "you've never again" confound the prophets. Hell, look at Lance Armstrong! His testicular cancer had spread to his brain and he has certainly gone somewhere since. Go for it. And my thoughts are with you. |

I kind of like the pompous, but I ain't patronizing. So as a pompous asshole, let me just say, get this shit done and done right. Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: freightdawg Date: 29 Jul 04 - 09:25 PM As one of the first ones to say nice things to me when I joined up I have always looked forward to your posts. I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but that is the first step in beating this thing. I know from personal experience that surgery is scarier that dying in some ways because of all the "what ifs." Everyone has a horror story of some distant relative who had "exactly what you have" and ended up having their leg amputated or some such rot. Most of it is pure baloney. Neurosurgery has improved light years recently, and if your MRI indicates surgery, trust the docs. I had a herniated disc and basically had to live on Percoset for 6 weeks. The feeling when I woke up in recovery was indiscribable. The pain was gone and I knew I could get back to my life. I know it is scary, but the alternative is simply not a choice. My deepest thoughts and prayers to you and yours, Freightdawg |

Forty years later the surgery must have improved, and it was already good in the 60s. I hope this news gives you a bit of reassurance. Good luck to you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Bill D Date: 30 Jul 04 - 12:27 AM several years ago, I had a pinched nerve in a cervical vertebrae...pain, couldn't turn my head, had one arm propped up on a pillow at night. I had ONE treatment...an injection of cortisone into the area to reduce irritation and swelling. (and the doctor SPECIFICALLY prescribed a pain medicine for it, and it DID help) (Hydrocodone(Vicodin) one of those you must be careful about, but good for 'some' things on a temporary basis) I still have to be careful and not twist my neck too far (or stand on my head like I did for my 50th & 55th birthdays..*grin*)...but so far it is managable. Do check whether the calcium deposit is of a size & location that precludes a try at that before you let them operate. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Peace Date: 30 Jul 04 - 01:32 AM Dear Sorcha, A student of mine had similar surgery five years ago. They removed a tumor the size of a golf ball--no joke. She was always very special to me because she completed her Grade 11 year awaiting the surgery, and continued to play basketball and volleyball, despite the occasional dizzy spell. She'll be completing her bachelor's degree in social work in May of 2005. She also plays basketball for a western Canadian university and she's as determined as she ever was. You seem to have her kind of determination, so I expect you'll have fantastic results, also. I wish you all the best, Sorcha. Sincerely, Bruce Murdoch |

Here I'm pissing and moaning that I can't sing with a cyst on my vocal cord, and you gotta get one on your brain! It's been said that no matter how bad off you are, there's someone worse off than you. Ok, did you ever wonder who is the one who is worse off than everyone else? And what is his/her problem? Seriously, research the record of the surgeon who is going to operate, pick the best, and know that he will do his best to fix you. That's all you can do except to be open to the healing energy from the Mudcat. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Rapparee Date: 30 Jul 04 - 09:33 AM Oh, yeah. I just realized that the neighbor of the friend of a co-workers third cousin -- the one who lives in LA? -- had either this or something sort of like it. Well, the doctor there recommended surgery and the poor guy, who went in for the removal of this arachnophobia or whatever this thing is called, ended up being having a capilliatomy! I mean, a total one! Everything was removed. And it didn't cure the problem! He still had it! His own doctor, who had gone to the best schools matchbook covers can advertise, gave up on him and said that he'd never play either the bassoon OR the gutbucket again, that in fact the guy would never again be able to do honest work at all. Well, of course this shook the poor guy up a lot and he resolved to beat this thing. He sat around in a circle all by himself, grunting and groaning as he concentrated on repairing the damage done by the surgery. And he overcame it! He has a wonderful head of hair! Of course, he still couldn't do honest work, so he took up the fiddle and now works at Renfairs and folk festivals and various bars, but he's the same as he ever was before, almost as mentally competent again as he ever was before this awful experience. So don't worry about it. Besides, fiddles are played with the fingers and hands, not the brain, so they're operating on something fiddlers don't need anyway. Seriously, I think I'll send you something that will help. It helps lots of folks out here just cope with living in Idaho, so it oughta help a Wyomingette? Wyomingite? Wyomingan? whatever they call them folks get over a simple thing like this operation. Mike |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Jeri Date: 30 Jul 04 - 01:29 PM "At least we now know why I'm crazy." Maybe... Maybe not. I hope you stay the good sort of 'crazy'. Nothing I've ever had done to me was as horrible as what I'd anticipated. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I think dreaming up all those possible 'worst case scenarios' was worse than anything real. I don't know why pain killers wouldn't work. Anti-inflammatories work at the actual site, but most others affect the way your brain experiences pain. It's the interpretation of the pain signal, not the actual signal or where it's coming from. In any case, I hope the surgery and recovery goes really well. I hope you're reasonably cranky (in a happy sort of way) afterwards, because they say obnoxious patients heal faster. I hope you find things you love to do now that will crowd out the fear. All the Best, Jeri |

When I was much younger (12? 13? somewhere around there) my mother suffered (and I mean suffered) from a slipped disk -- could barely move. Surgery was recommended, and she had a good doctor. She, too, had heard all sorts of horror stories about what could go wrong with fooling around with the spine. But when it was all over, it was like day after night. She was back to splitting wood, and everything not long after. Hey! Life is full of "Pains in the neck." Unfortunately, most of them can't just be gotten rid of, like yours can! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Mudlark Date: 30 Jul 04 - 08:57 PM Sorcha...Really sorry to hear of your probable need for surgery. I don't blame you for being scared...who wouldnt be. And all the probablys and maybes and what ifs are scarier yet. I am deeply distrustful of the medical establishment, and allopathic medicine, but there are some things they are really good for. This may be one of them. Very wise to get 2nd opinion...and 3rd and 4th too, if necessary, until you feel confident with both diagnosis and surgeon. One thing is sure, the body's ability to heal up after such things is truly miraculous, and very often the rehab times the surgeons give you are overblown, to make sure you're not disappointed, maybe. Hold tight, hug a corgi and keep us posted. I will be thinking of you... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: DonMeixner Date: 31 Jul 04 - 01:09 AM Sorcha, I don't know a thing about these cysts other than my old Golden Retriever Schooner had one. It looked like a large saddle bag on his right hip. We had it removed and he recovered just fine. But the recovery was fairly long. It was quite a show everytime he had to pee he had to get used to lifting his off leg. Then one day he discovered that he was not only healed and not in pain anymore but he was also ambidexterous regards to peeing. I can still remember seeing Old Schooner going from tree to tree, crossing the side walk and lifting the left leg for trees on the left, right leg for trees on the right. No only was he completely healed but he developed a new skill. I hope you do at least as well as Schooner. Warmest regards and best wishes. Don |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: InOBU Date: 01 Aug 04 - 09:08 AM Dear Sorcha: When I had to get a rather worrisom oporation on my throat, it struck me that to the doctor, this was as mundain as a bus driver doing his rounds, I was going through this once, he did it every day... so, like not thinking about how fast the subway train was going, you just sit back and take the ride for granted, just let them give you all those drugs that Cheech and Chong would pay good money for... and let everyone else do the worring... which we will, but you should not... Cheers and all the best Larry |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: PoppaGator Date: 02 Aug 04 - 01:26 PM Sorcha, my dear distant internet acquaintance, I'm sure all will be well. Medical science keeps getting more amazing every day, and as someone mentinoed above, your procedure will probably be an easy and routine day at the office for your doctor. Keep positive thoughts -- as will all of us, for you -- and you'll be on the mend before you know it. God bless. PoppaGator (recent) cancer survivor |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Sorcha Date: 02 Aug 04 - 06:31 PM Well! Things are moving apace, faster than I thought possible. I have an apt. with the Ft. Collins Colorado surgeon tomorrow, Tuesday the 3rd....this is still the first of 2 opinions, but hopefully I'll know a bit more afterwards. I'm hoping they tell me that this is a very easy procedure, and seldom causes problems... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Aug 04 - 11:45 PM For those interested, here is a Google search on the term. Sorcha, here's wishing you an easy surgery and a speedy recovery. With the firepower of all of your friends at Mudcat aiming their good wishes your way, this will clear up in no time. You might want to read through this thread occasionally--they do say that humor is the best medicine. :) But look out for those Idaho spuds. I think they're just trying to get rid of last year's batch before they send out the new ones. Those folks in Idaho will try anything. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Wolfgang Date: 03 Aug 04 - 03:45 PM I wish you good luck, for skill is only a part of the game (I strongly disagree with Micca here). People are different and that means not only their minds but also their bodies. Can't you get the doctors to put numbers to 'probable', like '3 in 10 of my patients have recovered compltely'? They hate doing this, but I personally feel much better informed when they tell me their numbers and leave the choice of the options to me. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Sorcha Date: 03 Aug 04 - 08:58 PM Well, this is almost an anti climax......saw the guy from Ft. Collins today and he says the cyst is NOT going to cause any problems at all and he is leaving it alone. He is NOT going to fuse anything...will go in from the back of my neck and remove the portion of the ruptured disc that is pressing on the nerve and an hour later I can go home!!! Going to try to schedule the surgery for Aug 17 or 18 and cancel the other apt. in Scottsbluff. Thanks, Friends! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorch's Not So Good News From: Mrrzy Date: 09 Aug 04 - 01:06 PM Just saw this - have had the remove-bulging-part neurosurgery twice for back trouble, the first time they only took the bulge and it didn't do anything, the second one they also went into the disk and took out its insides, which worked, and I am still delaying the next one which I assume I will someday need. Sounds like you will be OK too, and I look forward to hearing from the Mr. if you don't feel like typing right away! |
