Subject: BS: An appeal to the lazy/trendy From: Doug Chadwick Date: 04 Aug 04 - 03:08 AM A short exchange from the thread sympathising with Katlaughing on the loss of her pet cat (1) .............. LOL = Sadsam (2) Laughing Out Loud? Kind of inappropriate don't ya think, BTB? (3) Lots Of Love – Amergin Am I alone in finding this sort of Webspeak shorthand both frustrating and confusing. That such an oft used expression can be interpreted in two diametrically opposed ways speaks for itself. We have enough misunderstandings on Mudcat as it is. English is a wonderful language. Why not use it ? Doug C |

Subject: RE: BS: An appeal to the lazy / trendy From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 04 Aug 04 - 09:37 AM I agree. Use words! I find the use of acronyms to be very egotistical. The implication is "I know what this means. Do you? If you don't, you'll have to figure it out. If you can't figure it out, you're an idiot." And acronym usage is often totally superfluous. Most of us probably go for weeks without the phrase "in my humble opinion" crossing our lips, but there are people who seem to insert "IMHO" into every other post they make on the Web. Doesn't it defeat the purpose of using "shorthand" when the reader has to spend his time and effort decrypting and translating parts of the writer's message? And, anyway, most of us have seen the commonly used Internet acronyms so often that they no longer carry any power. "LOL" meaning "laugh out loud" has become so common and sterile that it lacks sincerity. If someone responds to one of my posts with "LOL" I'm not sure whether they really found it funny or if they're just being polite. If they respond with a simple English statement like "That's funny!" I know they mean it. |

Subject: RE: BS: An appeal to the lazy / trendy From: GUEST,meself Date: 30 May 07 - 04:21 PM Hmmm - a well done little vid(eo) - but it ain't all that funny; shoulda been whittled down to about 20 seconds. On the other hand, I'm Canadian, and have the exact same clock-radio as Josh, and at least once a day it even says "6:33", so I do feel validated. Oh, and my moustache isn't as fake as the coach's. |

Subject: RE: BS: An appeal to the lazy / trendy From: harpmolly Date: 30 May 07 - 11:23 PM I recently acquired a new friend who was obsessed (and I do mean OBSESSED) with text messaging. For a few weeks we messaged back and forth, and it drove me utterly crazy (the predictive text was just obnoxiously useless, and having to press each key a certain number of times frustrating). Regardless, as irritated as I was, I could neither bring myself to write shortened sentences or to abbreviate in the fashion discussed above (other than the occasional LOL). I may be the first person ever to actually use the words "tribulations" and "accordingly" in a text message *rolling eyes*. M |
