Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Compton Date: 11 Sep 04 - 07:22 PM Jim...it's Wolfgang's song that we needs the knowledge on!! .......but thanks for taking an interest!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Sep 04 - 06:14 PM According to this Sir Harry Lauder fan site, the song that Sorcha posted above is called THE BLARNEY STONE and it was written by Michael Hannaway & Harry Lauder. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Compton Date: 09 Sep 04 - 06:56 PM Thanks again, Wolfgang. I have a 4 CD set of ancient Irish Ceili bands doing the occasional song. They were Irish American bands from the 30s...and the song seems like one of them. De Danaan seemed to specialise in those. ...And I can't help thinking there ought to be more than two verses and chorus'.....but that's what is on the record because I remember there was a good reel as well. As the song is probably so obscure, it's unlikely there's a "Barney from Killarney" expert out there!!...(or is there??) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Wolfgang Date: 09 Sep 04 - 05:19 AM I couldn't have made such a good transcription as above but when I did listen last night I found no fault in it. The record has no notes to nay of the songs, but on the record itself at the place where the authors stand this song has 'trad.' (which doesn't mean much as we all know). Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Wolfgang Date: 08 Sep 04 - 10:42 AM I've three misprints in the chorus, that's too much, so here's the chorus again: Oh, when I get hold of Barney, Barney from Killarney I'll give him a touch of the Blarney, for on him I have no luck. Well he went away this morning, 'twas as the day was dawning and all he left to comfort me was a clucking hen and duck. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Sorcha Date: 08 Sep 04 - 10:23 AM Wow, thanks Wolfgang. Now, it seems we have 3 Barney's! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: MartinRyan Date: 08 Sep 04 - 09:58 AM "Clucking" seems more likely. Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song - Barney from Killarney From: Compton Date: 08 Sep 04 - 09:39 AM Well, thank you to both Sorcha and Wolfgang for finally getting me there. If anyone can check what Wolfgand has posted...or can shed any light on the history of the song...I suspect it's one of the Irish / American songs around about the twenties. |
Subject: Lyr Add: BARNEY FROM KILLARNEY (De Danann) From: Wolfgang Date: 08 Sep 04 - 05:00 AM I have a transcription from the De Dannan record version made by a German (but he is English teacher and has studied in Ireland so it may be close). I'll listen to the thread title giving bit tonight (clucking vs. cross-eyed?) Wolfgang BARNEY FROM KILLARNEY As recorded by De Danann on “Song for Ireland” (1983) 1. Oh, I'm Mary Ann McGuire; from Killarney town I came. My Barney left me with my son for to go across the sea. A pig from out my piggery this morning stole away And he sold it down in Bantry town and went off to Americay. CHORUS: OH, when I get hold of Barney, Barney from Killarney, I'll give him a touch of the Blarney, for on him I have no luck. Well he went away this morning; 'twas as the day was dawning. ALL he left to comfort me was a clucking hen and duck. 2. Oh, last night as I laid sleeping, sure I had a lovely dream. My Barney sat beside me with a bottle of old poteen, And as he handed me a drop, his old pipe he did smoke. When I reached out my hand for it and searched to him I woke. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song (cross-eyed hen?) From: Compton Date: 07 Sep 04 - 08:34 PM Sorry, Sorcha ...No...."And the only thing to comfort me was a cock eyed hen and duck"...honestly!! (and animal noises)..The tell me it's on "A song for Ireland" CD...anyone got it?? |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE BLARNEY STONE (Harry Lauder) From: Sorcha Date: 07 Sep 04 - 02:49 PM THE BLARNEY STONE Written by Michael Hannaway and Harry Lauder As recorded by Harry Lauder, 1910. 1. There's a fine-looking fellow called Barney McNally That lives by himself and his mother alone. He's the pride of Killarney, is this boy Barney. A little mud cabin is all that they own. Gifted by nature with gab and good feature, He captures the hearts of the girls all aroun'. His manner's so aisy, he drives the girls crazy Whenever he goes for a stroll round the town. CHORUS: Barney from Killarney with his blarney has done it. Rosie like a posy, sure her heart he has won it. The Haleys and the Baileys and the Dalys, ochone! Swear Barney from Killarney must have kissed the Blarney stone. 2. At a wake or a wedding, when Barney McNally Gets on the floor, sure the others sit down. They know they're not in it; he sings like a linnet And rattles his brogues well, the best in the town. And to twirl a shillelagh all the colleens to rally, There ne'er was his equal, I’ll bet my last bob. There never was a girl ever lived in this worl' If he asked for a kiss but would hold up her gob. http://www.sirharrylauder.com/lyrics/blarneystone.html Is this the one DeDannan does? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song (cross-eyed hen?) From: Wolfgang Date: 07 Sep 04 - 12:05 PM Barney (in an old thread). Don't know how close to the De Dannan lyrics. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song (cross-eyed hen?) From: Compton Date: 07 Sep 04 - 11:39 AM ...by the way, Sorcha....we never heard how "Fiddler on the roof" went on! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song (cross-eyed hen?) From: Compton Date: 07 Sep 04 - 11:36 AM Sorcha, good man(??) you are...have checked on Google (Mary Black Homepage !!)...inspired bit of memory since posting thread. Barney from Killarney it is!!...Don't have the record myself so cannot transcribe...but is there a mudcatter with the words (other than Maura O'Ccnnell)?? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song (cross-eyed hen?) From: Sorcha Date: 07 Sep 04 - 10:32 AM Well, Barney is on Song for Ireland, sung by Maura O'Connell, but Mary Black is on the album too....I have this one. I'll listen and see if Barney has a cross eyed hen. I found a Henry Lauder song called Blarney that mentions Barney from Killarney, but no cross eyed hen. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song (cross-eyed hen?) From: Compton Date: 07 Sep 04 - 10:16 AM No. something about eight to ten years ago...'twas when Mary Black was involved......Could the title be "Barny from Killarney"...seems to register with me?? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: De Dannan song From: Sorcha Date: 06 Sep 04 - 07:12 PM I have a lot of DeDannan stuff, but not this one. Do you know which album it's on? |
Subject: Lyr Req: De Dannan song From: Compton Date: 06 Sep 04 - 06:40 PM I was trying to remember the title of a De Dannan CD track...possibly with Mary Black....and damn it, the only thing I can remember about it was strange animal noises and the last line of the chorus..."And the only thing to comfort me was a cross-eyed hen and duck" (at least I think it was!) Anyone out there singing it or has the CD in question. What's the title...and even better, what are the words!! |
