I could have sworn I'd posted this before - but I can't find it in the threads - nor do I find the PM's I *know* I've sent out - I must have "neatened" my archives up at some point.

Heffalump is more a process then a recipe.

1 box instant pudding
1 container flavored creamer (or a combo of fluid milk with powdered flavored creamer)
1 large container Cool whip

mix the pudding - let it soft set, add the cool whip, finish letting it set in the fridge. devour.

I usually try to get the bestest combination of fat free/sugar free that I can. Very very rarely you can find coolwhip that is both. there are a couple flavours of instant pudding that are both. Creamers are usually one or the other.


My favorite combination is white chocolate pudding with baileys cream flavoured coffee creamer. But fudge pudding with bailey isn't bad. Nor is fudge with ameretto.

Well, unfortunately I'm on a low sugar diet at the moment(till I think of a reason to give it up), so I'll have to give this Heffalump a miss for now. But I would like to say, i see where you're coming from, pal.

greg - with a little hunting in the grocery stores it can be made virtually sugar free. (it's hard to get it both sugar free AND fat free - but sugar free is reasonably do-able)

There is also a technical problem .I dont know what instant pudding, flavoured creamer and cool whip are. We(the British) have endeavoured to teach the rest of the world to speak English. A lot of you are trying, fair play to you, but you havent quite got it yet.

He means blanc mange mixed with artificial whipped cream mixed with artificial milk that contains artifical flavoring (for coffee). It sounds like something you can overdose on, Leo!

No. Mousse is loaded with sugar and cream and real chocolate. This sounds way too sweet for me but why not bring some to the Friday night potluck at the getaway and we can all decide.

Seeing Kim posting, of course I used 'Heffalump' as a search word and found a post from Kim thanking you for the recipie. Then I thought a 'thank you' usually comes in the same thread as the recipie and scanned the whole thread for 'MMar'. That's how I got it. I'm always interested in the reliability of memories.

Sure you've got enough artificial ingredients in that recipe, MMario?

Each to his own, I suppose, but my healthy-eating thinking tends towards the theory that "natural" is better, and that *moderate* intake of sugar, fat, etc. -- coupled with exercise and other sensible lifestyle choices -- is far preferable to wholesale consumption of "substitute" substances cooked up in the laboratories of the petrochemical corporations.

I hate that chalky "non-dairy cream" powder, and go through about one pint per week of milk or half-and-half for my coffee. We've never had a tub or an aerosol can of fake whipped cream in our house (or aerosol cheese or any spray-dairy product), and we whip up some real heavy cream maybe once a month or so for a special dessert and/or Irish coffee.

Of course, making up a batch of "heffalump" with all-natural substitute ingredients would go far beyond anyone's definition of "moderation"!

I prefer it made with the "real stuff" as well - but this is an indulgance - and making it with the fake stuff allowed some friends who couldn't have the real stuff indulge.

But heffalumps aren't real anyway - at least outside the 100 acre wood.

Like the recipe I once saw for "chocolate Elaphant" (it was too big to be a moose) "Take a dozen eggs and two pounds of chocolate"

It's a pretty tasty indulgence, too. I bet you could split the difference by using real cooked pudding and Cool Whip, if you wanted something a little richer.

Poppa, I also bet you could use whipped light cream, which really doesn't have much fat/calories, since it's mostly air.

for the healthy eaters who want a better alternative to Cool-whip...try Creme Fraiche or better yet..Marscapone cheese. These both have the thick, creamy texture of Cool-Whip and don't have the petrochemicals. I often use Marscapone added to various trifle recipes in place of Artificial whipped cream or just the whipping cream. It lends a more substantial creaminess to the final product.

As for the Non-Dairy Creamer....Half & Half with a little Frangelico or other Liquoer such as Chambord. And if no American pudding can be found..just use Bird's custard.
