Australia's oldest folk club turns 50

Sydney's Bush Music Club hits the big 5-0 in October & we have been celebrating in 2004.

We started at the National Folk Festival at Easter, have a very large presence at Jamberoo Festival this week & finish with a day of concerts, dances, sessions & reunions on 10th October at our headquarters, Tritton Hall, Hut 44, Addison Road Community Centre, Marrickville 9am to 9pm, $20.
www.illawarrafolkclub.org.au

The club was founded in October 1954 by members of the Heathcote Bushwhackers, a group of men who were playing & collecting traditional Australian songs & tunes. Everyone wanted to join them so they formed the club to the teach & encourage others to perform.

BMC members have never stopped collecting and their work is held in the National Library Oral History Collections where is it continually used by performers & interested members of the public. One of our members, Rob Willis, can't join us for the October celebration as he will be collecting for the NLA in Western Australia.
http://www.nla.gov.au/oh/index.html (there are 2751 references to Bush Music Club in the Oral History collection)

Rob and another member have produced 2 half hour radio programs on the history & work of the BMC which will be distributed to radio stations here, & maybe abroad if anyone wants it. They produce shows for our National Broadcaster in similar format. Bob Bolton is one to the members featured in the program.

I was waiting for Bob Bolton to start this thread, but we've made him so busy what with writing history for magazines & festival programs, copying his & other's photos for a display, editing our magazine Mulga Wire, getting together music for performances, printing tee-shirts ... The poor secretary feels guilty when typing up minutes due to the number of times Bob appears on the Who is Doing What list.
