Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Joybell Date: 12 Sep 04 - 09:57 PM Hello back John. We have vanilla slices that are wobbly but stable vanilla custard with a thin layer of pastry top and bottom and icing on top. I like those a lot. Joy |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 12 Sep 04 - 10:00 PM heelo, vanilla slices are good, but have to be carefull, becase al that stuff in the middle can fall out, and get on your shirt, or on the carpit, and make a mess. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Joybell Date: 12 Sep 04 - 10:12 PM Hello again John, You have to not squish Vanilla Slices between your fingers and thumb they don't like that. Also your mouth has to be big enough to reach around them. I've never liked cakes that are funny shapes - like trains or houses. I like a cake to be round or square. Joy |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: open mike Date: 12 Sep 04 - 10:19 PM i have this batter that is like sour dough.. it grows and makes more then you give it away. i bake a cake every 10 days. I give away the starter to 2 people every 10 days too. It is called Amish Friendship Cake. it is like a chain letter. I am not sure i can send it thru the mail. So i do not think i will be able to send any to Hull. I put apricots, almonds, apples, or chocolate in the cakes when i bake them. I bake them in a Bundt pan..so they are not round or square...but like a giant doughnut with a hole in the middle. They are mostly flour, eggs, milk and sugar. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Joybell Date: 12 Sep 04 - 10:26 PM open mike, I had one of those going for a while here. It started to scare me a bit when I ran out of friends to give bits to. I had nightmares about it taking over the house and the town and the country and then the world - with all of us inside it. Maybe I shouldn't have watched Steve McQueen fighting The Blob in the movie of that name. Anyway be careful. Joy |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: GUEST,SueB Date: 12 Sep 04 - 11:13 PM Boston Cream Pie is my favorite - 2 cakey layers with a pudding in between and a hard chocolate glaze over the top. Mmmmmm. Mmmmmm. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: CarolC Date: 12 Sep 04 - 11:20 PM Don't eat turkey shit, John. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 12 Sep 04 - 11:36 PM I don't, i used to work in turkey factory, [my job was turkey killer], but if get too close to them, they shit on you, and it [turkey shit ] is bad for your skin, [probably full of jerms]. good money though, I was getting over 5 pounds an hour, [that was a lot of money in them days!] I worked in a few slaughterhouses, including Oakland, D.Marks [that place got shut down by the goverment inspecters], and Cranswick etc. slaughter place job can be good fun, ie= you can throw ded animals heads at people [packing girls] for a laugh, and put turkey haeds on their head, and they don't find out till later [thats called pracical joke]. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: GUEST,SueB Date: 13 Sep 04 - 05:02 AM My husband got us some turkeys, and I really tried to love them as one should love all god's creatures, but I couldn't. The females are okay, it's the toms that I couldn't stand. Horrible horrible creatures. The Bully Boys, we called them. Chased us all over the damned place. Couldn't go outside without a great big stick. When we killed them, my daughters used their heads for puppets. I'm not fond of fowl of any variety, actually. Filthy filthy creatures. Horrible. Always shitting, constantly shitting, foul liquid streams of putrid greenish goo, everywhere. Hate birds. Hate 'em. Um, but back to cakes. But before we go back to cakes, there's the joke about the farm boy who dropped his gum in the chicken yard - got it wrong five times, but finally found it again. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 13 Sep 04 - 05:06 AM Turkeys are evil, good idea to hit them wityh big sticks. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 13 Sep 04 - 06:18 AM If you feed the turkeys with stodgy cake they wouldn't be able to run away which would make them easier to hit. Mind you the cake would make them shit more so you may need a longer stick. Order yours now at www.longstickstohitturkeyswhoshitalot.co.uk. Alternatively you could do a search on Gobble. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Georgiansilver Date: 13 Sep 04 - 06:30 AM Heel ya ho boys, Life's so quirky. Get a stick now, And whack a turkey. Heel ya ho boys, Hit them hard now, As they try to, Shit on your shoes. To the tune of the Mingulay boat song....lol. Guest Mingulay, I love your sense of humour. Best wishes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Dave the Gnome Date: 13 Sep 04 - 06:43 AM I like them nice little cakes I got in a coffe shop in Amsterdam. They had a really good choice. I went for a cake from Morocco but didn't really like it so had one from the Lebanon next time. Funny thing is I can't remember having any coffee. Can't understand that... :D |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 13 Sep 04 - 07:28 AM Thanks Georgiansilver, I like yours too. Must remember that verse next time I sing the song. Fortunately there are no turkeys aboard the good ship Mingulay at present as turkey shit tends to clog up the bilge pump. Mind you it is an effective deterrent against gongoozlers and speeding hire boats. Rots an anorak quicker than battery acid. You need a high pressure pump however, and a good aim, and a following wind. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: GUEST,John O'Lennaine Date: 13 Sep 04 - 08:39 AM Sorry I'm late, but the correct way to successfully scoff a vanilla slice is to turn it upside-down, remove the bottom piece of pastry (which will of course now be on the top), eat it, and then eat the rest of the thing safe in the knowledge that it will not squash out the sides. This method also works for the things they used to call "French vanilla slices" in Cronulla cake shop in the '60's, but which I've never seen anywhere since. (Never been to France) French vanilla slices have a layer of cream on top of the layer of custard. I guess I could say fairly honestly that I've never tasted a better vanilla slice than the French ones they used to sell at the Cronulla cake shop in ythe '60's |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: LadyJean Date: 15 Sep 04 - 01:11 AM I love angelfood cake. My grandmother made it from scratch when I was a kid. So did my cousin Kitty Caldwell, who introduced me to John Jacob Niles. I will bake just about any kind of cake from scratch, except angelfood. The prospect of separating 16 eggs is more than I can face. A couple of years ago, I found some Amishmen selling cakes in Pittsburgh's Strip District. They had angelfood. So, I bought one. They were Amish. I figured they'd never heard of cake mix. I cut a slice. I took a bite. I tasted box. Fake vanilla and powdered eggs! Even the Amish don't make angelfood cake from scratch. There is a modern sculpture, all angels and beams, on Bigelow Boulevard, here in Pittsburgh. A flock of wild turkeys has decided it's their home. There's nowhere to pull over on Bigelow, so they're at no risk of being whacked, roasted, barbecued, or deep fried. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Teresa Date: 15 Sep 04 - 01:38 AM Hmmm ... turkeys are very good to eat, though; my favorite meat and gravy. I like anything with dark chocolate in it, too. to my taste, most American commercial chocolate is shite. Or ... there's always Miss Fogarty's christmas Cake ;) T |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: Joybell Date: 15 Sep 04 - 02:29 AM We have a place near us where they make their Vanilla Slices with cream folded into the custard. Must try the eating method recomended by Guest John. Sounds good Joy |

Subject: RE: BS: Cakes From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 15 Sep 04 - 07:31 AM Vanilla slices should be fitted with guttering to catch the wayward cream. Whatever way you try to eat them you always end up with a cream moustache. If you have a real moustache as well this is a 'good thing' as cream can be retained for later consumption along with the odd cheese sandwich, pickled onion biscuit etc. I like Tesco's Triple Belgian Chocolate cake, but I am only allowed a very measly portion. Sigh. |
