Ahhhh, really nice meeting you even though our first encounter almosr got me a good and well deserved butt whoppin' fir one of my patended "womenz rants"... I can't help myself... Maybe another week at the Betty Ford Center... (No, Bobert, no more Betty Ford... She's just like the rest of 'um...) Nevermind, good luck with the "curly" ivy and remember if any on the new growth comes out with flat leaves, cut that part out... Bobert |

Good groundcover for anything but full dry sun, but I find that grass and other things still comes up amongst it so you still need to weed -- not like ajuga that'll choke anything else out. It is a sport, meaning that it has mutated and it's leaves are curly rather than flat. It does not want to be in the house tho and would rather be outside in t5he dirt. It is cold hard so don't worry about it... Now here is the deal with it. Plant it where it can climb up something, you know, like a fence. You'll have to keep an eye on it and if you see parts of it growing with flat leaves cut or pinch off that portion and dispose of it because that means that the plant is trying to revert back to the parent plant. That is not good... Also, plant it where it will have room to spread. This thing is somewhat invasive in that respect. Great if you have a large fence you'd rather not see but bad if you plant it in a small bed with other stuff you like ... Hope that helps... Bobert |

Carly knew the truth of it though, and it's still on my porch railing. I'll be nice to it this winter, and you'll have it in the spring, unless I see you before then. One of the plants I got was about a foot tall and has ivy-like leaves. I think I might just have to plant a couple of these and see what they do in the spring. I just brought them inside for the night because their potted-up roots might not like a frost just now. Bobert, thanks for bringing them - it was a very cool thing to do. |

It doesn't bloom but is a nice plant to use here and there for contrast of color. It will grow in sun or shade and is drought tolerant. Nurse Rached, Jeri? Hmmmm? From: LynnT Date: 19 Oct 04 - 04:20 PM And I traded off my Magic Beans (purple with maroon spots -- they grow up to be Scarlet Runner Beans) to Janie and Bobert for a pot of hellebore babies. Happy camper here! I can't remember who I gave the Hyacinth Beans to. Most of the plants Bobert brought like at least some shade. - The Solomon Seals are the height they get -- those are the tall stalks with green-and-white rounded leaves. They'll spread into a nice clump in a few years, especially if they're in loamy soil. They like moist shade. In spring they'll get little white bells on the undersides of their stems that turn into berries -- NOT edible. - The irises were Iris tectorum, Japanese Roof Iris, which do well in part shade to full sun. Like most irises they have flat fans of leaves emerging from one end of a fleshy tubular rhizome. They bloom a bit later than bearded irises -- the flowers are light blue with darker-blue appaloosa spots, and a zigzag dark-blue beard. Among my favorites; I also grow a white kind with golden spots. Plant them like alligators, with the rhizomes horizontal halfway under the soil. They spread by offsets from either side of the main fan, so you can put the stub-end of the rhizome hard up against the edge of your flower bed with no trouble. - The hellebores (Lenten roses) are the small plants with what looked like strawberry leaves, three-lobed or so with toothed edges. Each of these plants will get about as big as a peony bush over the next two years -- maybe 18" or two feet tall and as big around, with large glossy dark-green evergreen lobed leaves. Very adaptable, for full to part shade, especially someplace moist. At Easter or a bit later they'll produce stems of cream to mauve flowers about an inch across that last a long time if you leave tehm on the bush -- I haven't figured a good way to keep them fresh in a vase -- but this won't happen for a couple years yet. - Mazus repens is a groundcover for moist shady areas that has small light-blue flowers. It has ropy stems with lots of small oval leaves hugging the ground -- no flowers at the moment. Plant it around stepping-stones, though, since it won't take either much sun or much foot traffic. Did I misss anything? Anyone else who's an avid gardener is welcome to come by my house in Lanham for a "shovel tour" -- I always have spare green kittens looking for homes. And lots more Hyacinth and Runner Beans too. Lynn |

Tinker took the irises & Solomon Seal, and Carly took one of the Lenten Roses. Question: Charlie is still doing Getaway stuff & would like an "out" from planting them before spring. I suggested putting them all, box & everything, in a low, sunny, sheltered spot in the garden if he wants to keep them until spring. Charlie asked whether he could use them to brighten the kitchen windows over the winter? |

It's the surprises that make the magic. The woman and her husband were just coming to eat, and stopped to listen to us singing in the 'for sale' rocking chairs out in front of the Cracker Barrel. She said something about the music, and was immediately asked if she knew any songs. I'd bet 9 out of 10 people wouldn't have sung even if they knew a thousand songs, but she did. Lovely voice, and the song was wonderful - I wish somebody (with her permission) had recorded it, but it was just one of those fleeting moments. New faces, anywhere, bring new songs, new voices, and different personalities and renew us and inspire us. Janie said "Bobert--I already told ya that God gave us longjohns so we could be comfortable at the Getaway, and he gave us brains to figure out what we might need to be comfy at an unheated camp in Maryland in mid October." What? Jack Daniels and Glenmorangie? Bobert, I got some of your plants, but I don't know what the heck they are! Do they like sun or shade? Wet soil or well-drained? And I swear I just remembered this very moment: I BROUGHT THE CHILD THYME AND NEVER GOT IT OUT OF THE CAR! Brain takes a holiday...damn. If we are all locked up in an asylum somewhere, I hope it's the same one and they allow instruments and singing! I wouldn't mind much. They'll probably have heat. Of course, if it's Bobert as Nurse Rached with the white dress and everything, I may have to think about it some more. |

From: Bill D Date: 19 Oct 04 - 09:40 AM The Getaway is mostly, sorta, a local thing, but we have had out-of-town guests for many years...Dick Greenhaus, Susan of DT, Dick & Marlene Levine, Sue & Charlie West etc...etc..are almost as regular as many of the locals, so when Dick Greenhaus got the DT onto Mudcat, and this chat forum started, there was this brand new source of new I guess most locals are used to seeing a bunch of new faces now, and although there are occasional look of "who ARE all these people?" from those who don't have computers..(or who don't read Mudcat), confusion usually fades into delight when the jokes & music start. And now, we are picking up folks who are local, like Bobert and M Ted, who have been right 'here' all along, but it took Mudcat to convince them to pop in and say hello... Hard to predict the future, but having the FSGW right near Max & MUDCAT CENTRAL makes for an obvious place for a serious gathering, huh? And personally, *I* hope to get to some of the other gatherings being promoted from within Mudcat, on the West coast of the US, in England, in Germany & Belgium, and even....*sigh*...in Australia, some day! Ya' never know... |

This is not a Catter event as such, I believe; it is organised by the Folkloric Society of Greater Washington, and includes several non-Catters. And it is clearly a lot more inefficient to have 100-150 people flying from the US to the UK than 10 (20? 30? 50?) the other way. Plus, we gain more by visiting the FSGW event on their home ground, I believe. We'll just have to save up and go as often as we can, combining it with a holiday perhaps - so much to see! Certainly, my own madness this year (out Friday afternoon, back by 9am Monday) is not something I would repeat lightly. Though I am glad I did it this time! |

They all found new homes. And, Bobert's Blues Styles session was flat terrific, I had to leave halfway through but Bill stayed for the entire session and is still talking about it, especially GutBucketeer's solo, and TJ O'Malley's version of a Blind Lemon Jefferson gospel song. (Have I got that right or has the memory chip failed me again?) :-) ... Now to go look at the thread El Greko started. Can't believe I'll laugh as much reading that thread as I did with this one, though. Rita |

I sat in on Bobert's Blues Styles workshop and know he loves the blues. He also sat in on the blues jam workshop. He played a blues he wrote hisself which he said he wrote for a friend of his who was entering a songwriting contest. And I always thought you entered your own songs in a songwriting contest. From: Bobert Date: 17 Oct 04 - 10:04 PM First of all, seein' as I skipped out a day early and some of these folks won't be around to post here for another day or two, these folks probably comprise about half the world's population of loonie people! Hey, don't believe me! I come home and me and the Wes Ginny Slide Rule beeen on it steady now for the last two hours and we're stickin' with the 50% findings. And that is being nice... These folks will eat anything. They will sleep in cabins without any heat (low 40's last night). They aren't particular about singing on key just so long as they are singin'. What else. Oh yeah, they walk up and down this long hill in the cold rain fir what? Danged it I know? They sleep (haha) 50 'der a hunner to a room... They don't sleep for 3 days... No one showers 'cause it's so cold that the hot water comin' out of the shower head freezes before it get to ya'... Now you all wanta know the real kicker? You got 'um flyin' in from Alaska dn the UK and the mooon for the (privelidge?) of living like this fir 3 days? See what I mean? BUT there is hope. This year this ol' hillbilly spent his time there so there was one normal person there to keep an eye on the inmates... Bobert p.s. Mr & Mrs Kendall are the cutest couple around. Normal? Ha! We're talkin' Kendall here, folks... But cute... |
