Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Peace Date: 26 Oct 04 - 02:45 PM Ease up on the foods that cause flatulence, Clinton. Add a little sodium bicarb when ya cook the beans. It takes some of the wind out their sails, and out yer's IMO. Givin' yer missus a break are ya? |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Amos Date: 26 Oct 04 - 03:03 PM I noticve he just asked for the bag -- perhaps he has a Mk VII in need of a bag? A |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Clinton Hammond Date: 26 Oct 04 - 03:07 PM Not that 'why' is of much relevance but it's for a costume of sorts... The MKVII gas mask bag is the bag that Indiana Jones wears in the movies... Through 'official' movie fan sites they can run as much as 110 bucks US plus shipping... I know they HAVE to be more affordable in the surplus stores.... And I also would imagine that they are easier to find on the UK side of the pond... So, is that clear enough now? |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: HuwG Date: 27 Oct 04 - 03:07 AM You may be able to order the item on-line from Silvermans. They have been dealing in surplus military kit for a long time. (They make, or used to make, a good profit from British Army soldiers. If a soldier lost a piece of kit, he paid the full price for the item. If he ordered it from Silvermans, and presented it to the Quartermaster for exchange, he paid a lot less. Silvermans would then buy the discarded item from the Army for a trifle. I vaguely recall seeing the same revolting piece of Pattern '58 webbing being presented for exchange twice within four months.) The above is not meant to imply that Silvermans deal entirely in junk. A lot of what appears on their web site appears to be brand new and is probably surplus only because it has been ordered by the forces in excess of actual requirements. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Micca Date: 27 Oct 04 - 05:00 AM Clinton, Ty the Silvermans link above and put in the search box "webbing, WW2" look at the last item the show, I think that is what you want, you will need a set of straps as well, total about 16 or 17 pounds |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Oct 04 - 12:37 PM Thanks Micca, but that ain't it... This is it... But I'd like to find one, less filthy :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 07 Dec 04 - 08:02 PM Now that's finished, I'd like to mention that I just saw last night the new US Army Fighting Robots - they are little tank tracked gadgets that can fire machine guns and grenade launchers by remote control - and they may be in use in Iraq soon. If anybody sees one (less armament) in a Surplus Store - please let me know! |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: JohnInKansas Date: 08 Dec 04 - 11:42 AM As usual, I'm a little too late. I recently came across Todd's Costumes who have brand new "repro" bags for $39 (US) plus $15 "International Shipping Charge" outside the US. They offer to give you instructions on how to "distress" it, if it looks "too new." I did also see that an "authentic" MK VIII bag isn't "authentic Indy" because his had a non-original leather strap. Maybe that last little "detail" you need for an "authentic whichever" costume. John |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Bob Bolton Date: 08 Dec 04 - 09:49 PM G'day Clinton, I only just opened this thread (the moment must have become sufficiently idle ...) and your linked photo confirms that the Mk VIII gas mask bag you sought is indeed what almost every Australian primary school kid carried off to school, when I was of that age (1950 - 1956). Only when I started high school did I get a posher "Globite" (moulded fibre ... with "imitation leather" finish) school case ... then a leather brief case in senior years. I presume we used a hell of a lot of those surplus gas mask bags ... so many that they became decidedly un-surplus and cheap Indian copies appeared (new, but not quite the same quality) in surplus stores during the 1960s ... and were still around in the 1980s, when I bought some for carrying odd pieces of lighting gear in the photographic department I then ran! Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Dec 04 - 10:19 PM Just to be pedantic, it's Mk VII... :-) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: Bob Bolton Date: 08 Dec 04 - 11:29 PM Ooopps! Just be realistic: they were only ever "A gas-mask bag" (if mentioned at all) when I slung one over my youthful shoulder! Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Military Surplus From: The Walrus Date: 09 Dec 04 - 09:52 PM Clinton, I can't remember from the film, but is it realy the Mk VII that Indy carries (One mai pouch to contain the respirator, one smaller on the other side to take the decontamination goggles and cleaning kit etc.) or was it one of the earlier Great War/interwar single pouch Small Box Respirator bags? Walrus. |
