When an LP got "stuck", you could move the needle a fraction of a space futher and it would go on playing.

WHY, then, if we have all this technology now, when a DVD shows itself to be a bit smudged or dirty by breaking up the picture---why can't we push a button to get easily past the glitch??

When my DVD player hits a bad place it just quits.

When I first heard of CD and DVDs, I was told the miraculous things would pass over anything it encountered that wasn't kosher---and just play what was.

This might be a silly question---but to me it smacks of yet another example of obsolescence being built into the product.

I don't know from DVDs, but many CD players have a facility which, when set, hold back a little before rendering the track into sound, and sort of look at the line of the music, recognize a hiccup, and miraculously pass over the glitch, as you mentioned. I tend to think that DVDs' information is just way too complicated for this kind of recognition feature.

Clean your DVD or CD, and you won't have that problem...

Art and Uncle DaveO, We keep having the same problem. With a NEW CD player. The CDs don't actually quit though. They just hiccup fairly often but keep going.

Just got me a digital recorder to record, among other things, frog calls and I can't believe how complicated the thing is. Teeney buttons, that you can't see even in the bright light, let alone out in the swamp in the dark. And you can't just press a button anyway. I really, really want equipment that has simple "on" "off" "play" and "rewind" buttons. AND I don't need it telling me "Hello" and "Goodbye".
How long will it be before I can't work a fridge any more? Sigh! Cheery-bye, Joy

No... I mean, the CDs themselves...

We were told that they would be nearly indestructible... but in reality CDs are even more susceptible to fingerprints, small scratches and dust than LPs ever were...

For the sound quality, a small price to pay says I....

I had one CD Player (home system....not a boom box type) that starting hiccupping on a regular basis. Cleaning the discs didn't work, so I bought another for around $59 US dollars. Works better than the more expensive one I had previously. I think that "throw away" is the theme of the day. I had a cassette deck that lasted 22 years. I've had 3 since then (in the past 7 years )!

Check the optics, too. We had a poorly designed player that allowed the optical lens to get dusty.......and so wouldn't work. A healthy puff of air usually cleared it up.

sometimes there is no other practical working option
than to 'rip' the damaged CD / DVD to a computer..
and either play the disc 'image' directly via software;
or burn a fresh new disc..

if this doesn't work..
at least it confirms the disc is irretrievably damaged..

A plastic specialty store, like Tap Plastics in the US, should have buffing compounds to polish scratches out of cd's and dvd's. Cleaning the lens is a good idea, too.
