Well, I am back from Romania! It was a valuable and educational experience and this is not some appeal for notoriety or fame but a declaration of humility and shame!. We have it all! The kids in Romania who are deaf or blind are dumped in institutions with nothing and I mean nothing! The things I have always accepted or taken for granted now grate on me and make me want to do more for them.
I gave out soft toys to teenage kids who have never had anything given to them in their little lives before and their faces lit up. They love me to bits just because I took a secondhand toy for them to hold.....what kind of world do we live in?? These children..sorry some of them... have never seen or held a toothbrush and many of the adults have bad teeth with no possibility of dental treatment. Some don't know what a facecloth or towel is!!! What a horror to me that was. I am almost lost for words.
Please...if you feel you have a heart for such children, then get involved with a group or do something yourself...YOU will find it rewarding..I PROMISE that. Best wishes...in sheer humility....Mike.

Thanks Dave...the longjohns were a real luxury and I almost felt guilty for wearing them....I had thermal socks which were given me by "Travelling Audience", long johns which I bought and food enough to feed an army........I DID feel guilty....those kids have nowt!!!! nothing...and they thought I was Santa Claus!!!....I just hadn't shaved for three days and had presents for them. I can tell you..at the moment I feel so humbled by the love I received from those who have nothing. If you are serious about giving something WLD then the charity I travelled with is "Light across Europe". The guy I went with is Jim Taylor...himself an unassuming and humble man who is committed to the task.... I am currently preparing an article for "Lincolnshirew Life" magazine. For anyone who may be interested...I have found out on my return that my mum has lung cancer and has a short life expectancy. Life can be cruel sometimes and my thoughts must also be with my family at this time.....To those Christians among you..please pray for her...she is Olive Hill... To those who aren't, perhaps a thought for her in her anguish and pain.

Prayers for your mother, Mike, and a lit candle burning for her. Perhaps the kindness you showed those children will come back to you in the form of a gentler passing for your mother. Make sure she knows that you love her and are grateful to her for your existence.

Mike, I've been so moved by this thread. Thank you for telling us about the poverty in Romania, and also for asking for prayers for your mother. I will be praying for Olive and sending light and love to her and to you.

Hi Friend,
quite painfull when the real world jumps up and bites your ass ain't it? The majority of people living the affluent western countries do not realise just what is going on out there. Please Please do not loose your sense of shock and horror at what you have seen, the people in these countries NEED as much help as they can get and it is only people from the affluent societies who can help.

My Grandfather used to say "Man plans. God laughs." You have my respect and admiration for actually going out there and doing something concrete to help. It occurs to me that you must now feel very torn – pulled in two (at least) directions, both of which are SO deserving (and in need of) anything you can give – and more.

Things are pretty tight for us financially at the moment, but I'm going to think about what we might be able to contribute.

My heart goes out to you, your Mother and the rest of your family. Wishing you love – and the peace that comes with it.
