Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 28 Dec 04 - 09:32 AM I think to be honest it has more to do with itchy feet than police states, actually. Although somewhere that isn't a police state would be nice...:0) |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 28 Dec 04 - 10:06 AM Hull sounds like my sort of place... I was thinking about Ireland before, but so was my dad and i don't want to go where he's going. At least not if it's a small country...:0) |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Little Robyn Date: 28 Dec 04 - 04:16 PM NZ is getting pretty strict with entry requirements. I think first, you need to have a job/skill that we don't have enough of here! There have been a lot of taxi drivers who have medical qualifications but no-one in the health business will employ them. And a lot of foreign sailors (on Russian sweat ships) have been jumping ship and finding employment in our local orchards or vineyards - but when the authorities catch up with them, they're tossed out. The average kiwi fella is getting a bit touchy about all the "refugees" arriving, some with no english at all, and our welfare system is having to look after them. So if you are well educated, have work skills that we can use and if you can find yourself a job (my daughter has been having problems with that one), then come on over. I'll be pleased to see you. But if not, then try OZ! (I don't think you have to be a criminal to get in any more!) Robyn |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: number 6 Date: 28 Dec 04 - 05:47 PM Galway does have a lot going for it. I was there for about 3 months back in 1997. It has without doubt the best street musicians anywhere. |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: mack/misophist Date: 28 Dec 04 - 07:11 PM I have some friends who emigrated to Oz 30 years ago. These days they won't even leave it for vacations. Be warned, though. Oz has more poisonous creatures - especially snakes - than any other place on earth. And then there's deadly spiders, deadly fish, deadly jellyfish, and deadly octopi. And the huge brush fires in the summer. Other than that, they tell me it's heaven. For those who admire Robert A Heinlein, he hated New Zeland. But it's probably changed since he was there. |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: MBSLynne Date: 29 Dec 04 - 08:37 AM It's not that easy to get into Oz...I grew up there and had resident status, but couldn't afford to get back within the three years I needed to to renew my resident re-entry permit. Now I can only go there to live by applying to emigrate....and they won't have me!! My parents and sister still live there too. Or maybe it's just me? Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 29 Dec 04 - 11:48 AM I think Hull is winning... |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 29 Dec 04 - 06:46 PM Always thought Robert A Heinlein had good taste... :-) My friends parents lived here for 45 years - they were advised that when they went back to England they should get Aussie citizenship first to avoid problems if they wanted to return here. And we are now stuffing the place up well and truly... |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 29 Dec 04 - 07:09 PM Don't bother with China BI. Both a police state and a one party state despite all the development. Food is good though. |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 29 Dec 04 - 07:22 PM For the next few years, Australia will be effectively a one party state.... And nobody will tell me where it is... |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Dec 04 - 04:00 AM To get into NZ you work on a points system. You get so many points for having a skill that is required (medical used to be a shoe-in, but not any more!), for having relatives who will sponsor/support you for up to 12 months and for having an independent income (i.e., one that means you won't take a job from a Kiwi or money from the State). If you get more than 6 points out of 10, you're allowed in. You then have to wait 12 months before you get your naturalization papers and can claim any benefits you are entitled do. Of course, this may have changed since my mother emigrated in 1998. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Dec 04 - 04:17 AM Mind you.. I'd avoid NZ, it's got my mother in it... AND my sister - the only acting extra at Helm's Deep not to need makeup to become an Orc..... (My bestest friend met her and wanted to kill her within 12 minutes)! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: MuddleC Date: 30 Dec 04 - 11:25 PM What about the good old US of A. Our bosom buddies who'll let in any Irishman but not an Anglo-saxon..(unless they have sheds of money) I really liked Northern California, and The Ozarks (Arkansas), there are beautiful parts of Texas and Arizona too, it's not all just desert. Salt Lake City is like Blackpool when the tide is out, and Las Vegas is like the New Tate Gallery-not enough exits! |

Subject: RE: BS: THinking of emigrating From: Little Robyn Date: 31 Dec 04 - 12:10 AM Hi Liz. If anything, the requirements are even tougher today. Where is your Mum? We're in Hawke's Bay but we're about to tour the South Island, in a bus with about 20 other Northumbrian pipers. Is your Mum into Folk music? Robyn |
