Comedian, Panto Dame and composer of 'Odd Odes' Cyril Flethcer died yesterday aged 91.
Survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Astell aged 92.
All my heroes seem to be going!
Good obit in todays DT. Interesting to learn that the thing I first remember him for 'Dreamin' of thee, Dreamin' of thee.... was written by (of all people) Edgar Wallace, the thriller writer.

Isn't he the same guy that did the 'odd odes' on That's life? Shame - very funny stuff indeed. Comiserations to all his family and friends of course. The world will probably be a sadder place:-(

Dave.

Ninety one is a damn fine run for a man whose 'odd odes' brought so much pleasure to so many people over the years .

I loved his big-eyed expressiveness.
Some of his 'Odd Odes' are on Paul's monologues site.

I hadn't realised the great man was still alive, so it's a double shock for me. I'll have to bone up on one or two of his monologues.

Farewell to the Father of Sonia Snell.
He'll go to heaven and not to hell.
If indeed such a place there be.
He'll be in jolly good company.

RIP Cyril a good innings, and a well spent life.
Giok

Before Cyril Fletcher started appearing on Thats Life, there was someone called Ronald Fletcher who fulfilled a similar role (reading out amusing bits from newspapers, etc). He seemed taller and thinner and possibly somewhat older than Cyril (I think he was grey haired)and had a fairly similar, if perhaps slightly more cultivated voice. Does anyone (in the UK) know if he was related to Cyril Fletcher?

Don't think he was related to Cyril, although info seems thin on the ground. Appears to have been one of the 'I'm sorry, I'll read that again' crowd with Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie.
