I already have a harpa Open mike, but have just caught the "making" bug that I gather eventually gets many fiddlers and harpa players....in my own case it was the realisation that my friendly local luthier wasn't going to touch such a beast of an instrument, "you're on your own wi that ein laddie" were his words, so any repairs/improvements were going to be down to me.....

Making a Moroharpa sounds an interesting project....I'm putting wood aside at the moment to have a go at making a nyckelharpa myself, but fancy tweeking the design if at all possible to make it lighter whilst still retaining the strength necessary for the stringing. I'm growing my own wood for the project...

Hello!
It's wonderful the nyckelharpa stuff that's going on! We already have a network to keep in touch with each other. There is the Nyckelharpa Yahoo group and also a FaceBook group and I have a website where I am assembling information. There are going to be some interesting things happening from the summer, so keep an eye on the site that I am putting together.
Nyckelharpas in the UK
I plan on making it a resource of information for us all here in the UK.

I see what you mean open mike, however, I have to say I was put off by two things with ANA....first the annual fee is way above an equivalent UK group ((I'm thinking of the Nonsuch Dulcimer Group); secondly it was effectively Paypal only and I have security issues with Paypal. Surely it would make more sense if there are now enough UK players to form an association here and then affiliate to ANA if desired by the majority?

Thanks for the information....I had found the ANA and a wide range of nyckelharpa websites in Scandinavia, but was more concerned about finding out about UK players, UK workshops and UK organisations (and some of the replies above have answered these points), simply from the point of not wanting to travel vast distances for first hand nyckelharpa experiences.

Events related to BURG FÜRSTENECK in Germany

1. There will be a two hour concert review on the national German radio "Deutschlandfunk" January 23, 2011, 9 to 11 pm MEZ!!! on the Internet www.dradio.de. There will be a live-stream and there is also a tool "dradio-Recorder" to record the live-stream automatically.
The concert was played at BURG FÜRSTENECK in Germany October 9, 2010 by the members of the EU CADENCE project (www.cadence.nyckelharpa.eu) and the teachers of the International Nyckelharpa Days at BURG FÜRSTENECK.
A variety of music, from early to contemporary, can be heard along with Scandinavian music. Some pieces where composed especially for nyckelharpa ensemble.

2. On January 31, 2011 we will have a new start for the continuous European Nyckelharpa Training at BURG FÜRSTENECK in Germany. There are some places available. See: (www.nyckelharpa.eu)

I know of Gavin Pennycook up here in Scotland and suspect that there is at least one other player up here (making three of us). I have heard of a lassie who has played at a folk festival in Wales and that's all.....but there must be more of us (I'm guessing at least a dozen). In the same way that the dulcimer fraternity have their own players group, I was thinking about something along the same lines for we nyckelharpa players.....I'm happy to set up a website, any ideas and contacts would be appreciated.

From very small beginnings, the UK nyckekharpa fraternity is growing steadily.

Four of us got together at Tideswell in Derbyshire a few weeks back to play for a general weekend of music and dancing on a Scandinavian theme along with other fine musicians.

We will also try to get together at the Scandinavian Festival in Horton in Ribblesdale for the May Day bank holiday.

For those wishing to learn (which is most of us), there is a workshop with Niklas Roswall at the Norwich international festival in March where there will also be dance workshops.
