Subject: judy collins in early 60's From: ma Date: 16 Feb 97 - 12:16 PM hey ya'll ma here, just found your 'site' thanks to a nice fellow's letter on hwy-61 dylan discussion group that gave this address. there has been a small thread since i joined the dylan digest in jan. 97 that involved ian and sylvia, a favorite of mine from the early 60's. just the power of their names brought to mind other favorite albums (from that time period) along with a particular album cover in my mind's eye. i have been 'dogged' by the haunting voice and lyrics to the song on a great! judy collins album from 62/63 (approx.). the song was called "anathea" (i believe, and it may also have been the title of the album. can anyone tell me the exact lyrics? is that particular ablum still in print? if not, did anyone keep their vinyls in good enough shape and had the forsight (when cassettes came out) to copy this particular judy collins album (or the ian & sylvia album that contained "someday soon....goin' with him.... someday soon"). if there exists a copy of either, does the owner want to make another copy ;>} the collins album had a huge, full-face pic of miss judy covering the entire front of the album (i believe she had on a blue blouse that matched her blue eyes. it was a long time ago, but some memories are precious enough to remember again. thanks in advance for any time that anyone spends on this personal request. i don't know how to receive your newsletter, so gonna give my e-mail address for any rememberences or help that ya'll may have. ma "i was lost in the rain in juarez...", but now i am found! maryjoe@telapex.com |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: rich r Date: 16 Feb 97 - 06:03 PM The lyrics are in the data base and also discussed in a a thread a week or two ago. As for the albums in question. I have not seen Judy Collins Third album lately, however there is a very fine track of Anathea to be found on the CD Judy Collins Live At Newport (VAnguard). Vanguard has also reissued all or most of there Ian & Sylvia catalog. "Someday Soon" can be found on both the NORTHERN JOURNEY CD and on the GREATEST HITS CD. rich r |

Subject: Lyr Add: DIAMONDS AND RUST (Joan Baez) From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Mar 02 - 10:39 PM Not Judy collins, but Joan Baez. DIAMONDS AND RUST (Words and Music by Joan Baez) Well I'll be damned Here comes your ghost again But that's not unusual It's just that the moon is full And you happened to call And here I sit Hand on the telephone Hearing a voice I'd known A couple of light years ago Heading straight for a fall As I remember your eyes Were bluer than robin's eggs My poetry was lousy you said Where are you calling from? A booth in the midwest Ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks You brought me something We both know what memories can bring They bring diamonds and rust Well you burst on the scene Already a legend The unwashed phenomenon The original vagabond You strayed into my arms And there you stayed Temporarily lost at sea The Madonna was yours for free Yes the girl on the half-shell Would keep you unharmed Now I see you standing With brown leaves falling around And snow in your hair Now you're smiling out the window Of that crummy hotel Over Washington Square Our breath comes out white clouds Mingles and hangs in the air Speaking strictly for me We both could have died then and there Now you're telling me You're not nostalgic Then give me another word for it You who are so good with words And at keeping things vague Because I need some of that vagueness now It's all come back too clearly Yes I loved you dearly And if you're offering me diamonds and rust I've already paid Spaw |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 29 Mar 02 - 05:59 AM Judy's own version of "Someday Soon" is - I THINK!! - on her album Who Knows Where The Time Goes, the cover to which is indeed blue-toned and beautiful, and this may be the one you're thinking of. Amazon.com has a bunch of CD re-releases of her old albums and some compilations, and they list what tracks are on which records, and have audio clips; so you may find that some of those old memories are not so irretrievable after all! Worth a surf (but watch out: hate to tell you how much money I've spent on Judy and early Joni recently).
Welcome to Mudcat - there are a lot of us 60s folkies out here! All the best, Bonnie |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: SINSULL Date: 29 Mar 02 - 10:40 AM Hi ma. There has been lots of discussion on Anathea here. Have fun searching out the links. That album was one of my treasures in the 60s. I think my brother has it packed away. Those incredibly beautiful eyes! Thanks for reminding me. I have the Ian & Sylvia CD - a great collection. I hope you don't take offense but I hate to deprive the artists of their hard earned money by making copies when the music is readily available in CD and LP form on Ebay. Lyrics are all here. Visit the Mudcat Room on Paltalk and I am sure you can get someone to sing them...or maybe you can offer your own versions. Welcome. Mary |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: Wesley S Date: 29 Mar 02 - 12:04 PM Ma - One website I use a lot is www.allmusic.com - type in Judy Collins and it will show you all of her releases with cover photos and a rundown of the songs on each one. And suprisingly I find the reviews they have to be pretty fair and accurate for the most part. It's a good resource. You can trace a song, an artist or even an album title. |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: GUEST,Mike Strobel Date: 29 Mar 02 - 12:08 PM Dear Ma, Got to see Judy Collins for the first time this past summer. Everytime I planned on seeing her in the sixties and seventies , something came up and prevented me from going. Today, I believe Judy is 64 and her blue eyes are as clear as her INCREDIBLE voice and smile. She just looks and sounds more beautiful than ever AND she began her set with Ian and Sylvia's song " Some Day Soon ". Thanks for letting me share this story. Mike |

Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 29 Mar 02 - 01:17 PM [wiping egg off face as fast as she can] Anyway, it's worth it to learn of Wesley's Allmusic website, where I'm now going... [slinks out back door quietly] |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: Wesley S Date: 29 Mar 02 - 02:18 PM By the way - I just found a link to www.allmovie.com - a similar search engine for movies. I was finally able to get some info about one of my favorite lost movies - "The High and the Mighty" with John Wayne. |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: Midchuck Date: 29 Mar 02 - 02:19 PM Saw Ian Tyson in Northhampton, MA, in '95. He said it was the first time he'd been in Massachusetts in 30 years. When he sang "Someday Soon," he introduced it with "This is the one that paid the mortgage on the ranch!" Peter. |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: GUEST Date: 29 Mar 02 - 02:26 PM Wesley. Thanks for the intro to allmusic; another site added to the favorites list. |
Subject: RE: judy collins in early 60's From: Willie-O Date: 29 Mar 02 - 06:54 PM That's funny, Midchuck. When I saw Tyson about the same time, I think he made the same quip about "Summer Wages". The sumbitch was pushin 65 and looked 35. Ranch life keeps you in shape if it don't kill you. He ended his show with a killer version of... yes, OF COURSE, his big hit.....
