The Bok, Muir and Trickett digressed to this so I thought I'd start a new thread & keep this dicussion going.

Just for the record, all the Golden Ring recordings are now on cd- I'm the happy owner of all! They really formed me as a musician and harmony singer. And Sandy and Caroline Paton are singing on- they just sang at my school in NH a few weeks ago and the kids are still asking when they're coming back!

Sandy and Caroline have done so much for folk music- any stories out there?

I just ordered a bunch of CD's from Folk-Legacy yesterday. Caroline Paton answered the phone, and we talked for almost an hour. Where else can you get that sort of personal touch when you place a phone order? She recognized my name from Mudcat. She and her husband Sandy discovered the 'Cat over the weekend, and you'll see that Sandy has posted a few messages the last couple of days. I hope we'll see more of them.
Their Web site is a great place for browsing, but it's a nice experience to call in your order. In the U.S. their toll-free number is [phone]. Outside the U.S., it's not toll-free, but you can call them at [phone].

Much as Caroline and I appreciate the kind thoughts and generous words from Animaterra, Joe (who has suddenly become more than just a name on our mailing list!), and Karen, I do think we ought to consider the purposes of this forum. It is not being made available to us as an advertising medium for Folk-Legacy, although we are certainly grateful for your efforts on our behalf.

If we plug Folk-Legacy here, let us also mention Wally's wonderful Camsco Music site, Smithsonian-Folkways, Yazoo, Rounder, and all of the others who are working to keep good music alive and well. None of us are getting rich off of the effort (ask Wally!), and we do need your support, but not at the expense of this forum.

So, let me say "thanks," before Dick or Susan holler "Hold! Enough!" as they, quite appropriately, should do.

Talk about the artists we have recorded, sure. Talk about the songs on our label, fine. But let's be cool about the rest. Okay?

Stay well, good folk, and keep singing! Shucks, if we can do it, anyone can.

Yeah, Sandy, I suppose we did start to sound a bit like Madison Avenue there. Still and all, you sell good stuff and you do a good job selling it, and you've very nice about it. Consider yourselves to be patted on the back. Actually, though, if you have to know the truth, it's your wife we're complimenting, not you. You're OK, but she's downright wonderful.
When I e-mailed Rounder to suggest that they reissue the Redpath/Neustadt gospel album on CD, I got a reply that they did not have that item in stock. I KNEW that. Somehow, I think that Folk-Legacy and some of the other, smaller companies wouldn't have responded that way.
In defense of Rounder, I also have to say I was very impressed to see a vice president from Rounder at a house concert in California, and they certainly have done a lot to promote a wide variety of folk and "roots" music.
Arhoolie and Folk Era are two other labels that make a good contribution, and there are many others. But nobody has ever been as nice to me on phone orders as Caroline Paton at Folk-Legacy.

I agree Joe, 100%, but to keep Sandy's ears from turning too red, let me say that I just bought the Harbors of Home when the trio was through here, and it has some wonderful stuff on it. Started right off with a song written by my old friend Helen Kivnick, who wasn't writing songs (that I knew about anyway) when she lived out here on the left coast.
Harbors of Home is a lovely song, too, one that has been haunting me since I heard Valentine sing it a few years back.

Dang it all though, it doesn't have Tails and Trotters on it, a nifty Goodenough tune that the Trio sang here Saturday last. That's on another CD that I found at their website And So We Will Yet . Lemme see, where'd I put my pencil....

I did pick up the 5 Days Singing Vol I of the Golden Ring and am having a wonderful time listening.

We do throw out bouquets to some of the others at times, including all the ones you have mentioned, and a bunch you haven't, County, Topic, Waterbug, and of course, those people who put out their own hard cash to produce their own CDs. It just happens to be your turn.

PS For All The Good People is not quite as high on my list as Joe's, but it does occupy a favored spot right next to the CD player, along with Geoff Seitz, The Buckhannon Brothers, The Grace Family, Barton, Para, and Dyer, The Dowden Sisters, Prickly Pair, Curly Miller and Carole Ann Rose, and The Echoes of the Ozarks. Right at the moment, I can't think of a better compliment than that.

MY favorite Folk-Legacy story is a teasing reminder to them.*grin*...they came to the Washington Getaway... maybe 17-18 years ago, and being one who is compulsively early to everything, I was there when they arrived..."Did you bring records?" I asked.."Why, sure" they said..and they unloaded them. They were up to maybe 60 or 70?? at that time, and they had brought 2 (that's TWO!) of each item! Well, being first in line, I grabbed..and it worked out fine for me..but some items are more popular than others...*smile*, and by dark on Friday evening, pickins were pretty slim...our crowd was record-hungry bunch. I teased them about that once or twice since.

(However, to be fair, if they HAD brought enough of everything, they might not have had room for clothes and guitar..*wink*...and they DID provide a lot of great singing and company, so we forgave 'em...and invited them back..)

Sandy and Caroline are simply the best, folks. I'll never forget the night at the festival in Hartford when Len & Fran Domler & all gave Sandy that beautiful guitar he'd had his eye on! Very few dry eyes that evening. And nobody deserved it more! They even put up with me (and many others) for WEEKS at a stretch 'cause we'd been unable to get weekday gigs between the weekend ones. What wondrous hospitality! Plus a wonderful record collection from which to "collect" the songs we wanted to learn! I'll never be able to thank you fine people at Folk Legacy enough---Sandy and Caroline, Lee Haggerty, Robin and David Paton. You even got me to lose weight on that unique Pritikin diet! (But ya never did get me into a kyac.)

Your Sharon mountaintop was an oasis for so very many. The music you made yourselves. (Check out Sandy's first LP on Elektra about 1959---THE MANY SIDES OF SANDY PATON. I loved it & Sandy hated it, but the first American recording of "Wild Mountain Thyme" was on it) plus all the music you've issued on recordings set the standard for many of us. As I've said, it was grand bein' a part of the trip!

Did you know that Gary Gardner went to high-school with Caroline's younger brother? We sang at his and Helen's wedding, and enjoyed that huge chocolate sundae wedding cake by Debbie McClatchey (spelling??). Incredibly wicked!

No I didn't! Helen caught the wreath I tossed at our wedding, also catered by the amazing Ms. McClatchy. (She works in the kitchen wearing this T-shirt, says: Every musician needs a day job) I met Gary first since he sings the same kind of stuff I do, 1975 maybe, and all he could talk about was the lovely lady who would be joining him out west.
It's foggy here this A.M. and I can hear the Canada geese calling as they fly low over our farm...

Just back from Dunne's Pub in White Plains, New York, a real "home" for traditional Irish music in the suburbs north of NYC, where we had the (first) CD Release Party of Folk-Legacy's "Irish Ballads & Songs of the Sea." It was quite an evening. At one point we had 3 fiddlers, 2 flute players, 1 accordionist, 1 on mandola, 1 on mandolin, a fine harper, 3 on bodhran and another 3 singers and a guitarist in a not-so-terribly-big space. I realize that does not constitute a World Record but the degree of conviviality and ethusiasim just might.

Part of what makes the regular Wednesday night Dunne's session special is the owner, a fellow who actually likes traditional music and who dreamt of how much pleasure it would give him to bring music into his "house" rather than the possible financial reward.

There were many high points to the evening, some lovely air playing on fiddle and harp, plenty of lively dance tunes and songs. Among the pleasures was Rob Paton's rendition of "The Jolly Tinker," a version of "Whiskey in the Jar," plus a very traditional-sounding song he's written named "Down in the Irish Quarter."

Sandy & Caroline have been very hard at work at Folk-Legacy and were unable to attend. Dave, with whom I've sung many times already this year, was minding his (quite extensive) brood. It was a lot a fun to be with Rob and hear him. The Patons continue to make great music!

The late Judy Goodenough wrote several songs recorded by Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett. Her "At Turning of the Year" is the closing song on their newest compact disc: "Harbors of Home" (see it listed on our Folk-Legacy web site at http://www.folklegacy.com.

She also wrote "Tails and Trotters," which is probably the mention that brought you to this thread. That's on the trio's "And So Will We Yet," (CD-116) also from Folk-Legacy. One more, at least: "Sally" on Gordon's "Return to the Land" (a solo CD - CD-118 - also on Folk-Legacy.

Judy was a fine poet who enjoyed contributing songs to Gordon and the trio. She died of cancer several years ago. A great loss.

That red part is the part the reader sees, and it can be any phrase you want. The blue stuff, which is enclosed in angle brackets, is the actual command, and the URL you're linking to is what's in green - what's inside the angle brackets is invisible to the reader. Make sense?

Did you know that our web page is handled by a volunteer HTMLer down in Maryland? Yep. He just called one day and said, "Hey! I love your records of the Boarding Party! You oughta have a web page. I'll help you do one." It's all on a barter basis. He gets CDs (which he scans) and we get the benefit of his expertise. Now that's a terrific deal for us!

Mary Ann, this "Parting Glass" you say was written by Judy Goodenough, that's not the Clancy Brothers standard that's in the database (click here), is it? I thought that one was written by "traditional." Am I wrong, or is it another song?
