Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: GUEST Date: 22 Apr 05 - 06:23 AM from http://www.savearcticrefuge.org/ : Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the crown jewel of America's National Wildlife Refuge System. Tucked away in the state's remote northeast corner, this 19.6-million-acre wildlife sanctuary is an awe-inspiring natural wonder: a sweeping expanse of tundra studded with marshes and lagoons and laced with rivers dramatically situated between the rugged foothills of the Brooks Range and the wide, icy waters of the Beaufort Sea. The wildest place left in America, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge – often called the "American Serengeti" – is home to caribou, polar bears, muskoxen, arctic foxes, wolverines, grizzlies, and snow geese, all of which depend on this fragile, unique ecosystem for survival. It would be irresponsible to sacrifice this national treasure for a few months' supply of oil. -------------------------------------------------------- [one recent signature to the virtual march petition added a message, "save the rainforest" -- thinking globally!] |

Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 22 Apr 05 - 06:36 AM here is the petition/letter, with intro. from http://www.savearcticrefuge.org/ Below this I will paste in the EARTH DAY letters (one version to be sent to senators who voted pro-drilling and another for the more conservation-minded senators) "March 16th the Senate voted by a razor-thin margin to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling by sneaking a measure into the budget bill. But the fight to protect the Refuge is not over. Send your Senators and Representatives a message now, telling them to vote against any FINAL budget measure that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge." "Dear Senator/Representative, "As your constituent, I strongly urge you to vote against ANY budget measure that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The inclusion of any such measure in the budget is an unacceptable sneak attack on our precious wildlife. "Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is not a path to energy independence or lower prices at the pump. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the Refuge has less than a single year's supply of oil that would not reach the market for at least 10 years. Meanwhile, the harm to wildlife and to our greatest wildlife refuge would be irreparable. We need to save national treasures like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for future generations. Sincerely, " Below are the letters from www.earthdayvirtualmarch.org/ If you are from the US and you submit your name and postcode, the organisation will mail your state senators on your behalf. There is also a map on the page showing from where people are virtually marching [making and using computers uses fuel - we are all "co-opted", but I suppose a virtual march is less resource-exhausting than when people physically travel to the site]and has facilities for "marchers" to invite their friends and acquaintances. Letter 1 "Dear Senator, "As a constituent I wanted to express my thanks for your voting to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. While Im disappointed in the outcome of the first vote, I urge you to continue your efforts to block final Congressional passage of any budget bill that includes drilling in the Arctic Refuge. "On this Earthday we should consider what strong actions should be taken to save wildlife, its habitat and the environment we share for future generations of Americans. Not only should we continue to protect our Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts, but Congress should end this constant battle over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Please set aside the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from drilling once and for all through the Eisenhower-Udall Arctic Wilderness Protection Act (S.261 and H.R. 567). "Sincerely, Your Name " Letter 2 "Dear Senator, "As a constituent I wanted to express my strong disappointment over your vote to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. My hope is that you will reconsider your vote the next time this comes before the Senate. 567)." |

Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 22 Apr 05 - 02:20 PM In the UK, an "artic" (abbr. Articulated Truck) is what Americans know as a "semi rig", so which particular one are we protecting? Seriously tho', the guys who thought up this latest piece of vandalism, along with those who approved it, should be buried in the first test hole, and the project then immediately cancelled. Don T. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: GUEST,Larry K Date: 22 Apr 05 - 02:28 PM I spend earth day setting a guiness record by planting 4200 trees in one hour coordinated between Detroit, Atlanta, and Seattle. I think that was far more production that signing a petition. The only similarity I can find is that either way you are shoveling manure. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: Azizi Date: 22 Apr 05 - 06:11 PM BTW, I just recently learned how to make hyperlinks because a Guest posted the instructions in a thread. Here's what I do: I find the website through google or some other search engine or if I know its URL address, I put it in the address box in the tool bar. I then right click on Properties When a box appears I click on OK. I then return to that website and use the cut feature in Edit to get the websites' address. Then I return to the Mudcat post I am writing and hit the clicky link feature underneath the post box. I follow the instructions given in that box. This usually works though for some reason my links come out red instead of blue. [If I wrote any part of this down wrong, would someone please correct it. Thanks.] **** Also, I found this back door URL for Mudcat in another thread: http://207.103.108.99/threads.cfm This usually works when the front door isn't working for some reason.. It occurred to me that some posters might need this information. Ms. Azizi |

Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: Clinton Hammond Date: 22 Apr 05 - 06:17 PM I'm struck by, given how little marches tend to accomplish at all, what a WOMBAT a 'virtual' march would be... |

Subject: RE: BS: Earth Day virtual march to protect artic From: 42 Date: 23 Apr 05 - 07:56 AM The "every day is Earth Day" comment made me think of this charming little ditty I composed last Earth Day. Ode to Earth Day. Pick any waltz tune you like and join right in! jen Nights are still freezing. We're all sneezing or wheezing The crocus are trying too hard. The redwings are whistling. Robins stand listening for dinner out in the yard. A Canadian April… Pussy willows and maple Syrup tastes sweet on the tongue. Snowbanks stop growing. Creek's overflowing And we're all going Green for a day. Cause it's Earth Day in Can a da. Garbageless lunch - all the rage. Pick up the trash that was tossed out the window. Write on the back of the page. Yes it's Earth Day in Can a da. The day we atone for our greed Pretend that we care and are doing our share. And never take more than we need. Snowbirds returning. Noses are burning. Forgot to wear sunscreen again. Farmers are cursing. Daffodils bursting. Storm sewers work overtime. I'm out here baking, digging and raking. Watching the sky for the rain. Writing this tune, lord, I wish it was June. I'd rather be making… "Whoopee" But it's Earth Day in Can a da. Garbageless lunch – all the rage. Pick up the trash that was tossed out the window. Write on the back of the page. Yes it's Earth Day in Can a da. The day we atone for our greed Pretend that we care And are doing our share. And never take more than we need. |
