I just happened on this web site.

http://www.infoadriatic.com/grebastica/grebastica_05.shtml

This is a family owned apartment...doesn't sound too expensive. If you read through the web site there is all sorts of information about history, archeology, winemaking etc. It sounds like things are looking up for people there. I hope so.

Anyway, sounds like a great place for a vacation. mg

No comparison. Croatia is at peace and as with many other countries in that area, food is cheap and accommodation too. Romania, Bulgaria etc...If you decide to book a holiday in any of those East European (and just beyond) countries..I would suggest you book flights and try to arrange your own accommodation over the net or when you get there...Package holiday operators are charging much the same prices as for similar resorts/countries, where the standard of living is much more expensive...so are making huge profits. About the flights (from UK anyway) try " wizzair.com " which can take you to Budapest (Hungary) and from there you can make your own way by bus or whatever.
Incidentally...A two bedroomed house in Romania with land...will cost around 25-30,000 euros or £18/23,000.... A house in the Capital Bucharest will cost around a tenth of one in London. Soon to join the EU, the prices will surely rise as people move there to start businesses. The country will develop from what it is now and so will the prices   ...Good investment?
Best wishes, Mike

Three years ago my daughter played in Croatia with the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.   They all had a wonderful time and the pictures look really amazing. Had a bit of trouble getting the entire orchestra's instruments in and out. ( Taken by van overland and then official imported into Croatia). Other than that and the odd case of sunstroke everything was fine.

I was in Croatia this past October (as well as Slovenia) and I found it to be one of my very favorite vacation spots ever.   Prices are cheap, accomodation, people, and food all wonderful.   Full of Roman ruins and NO CROWDS!   If anyone would like info I will be delighted to send my info to you. We rented an apartment in Pula and on the property of the owners was a ruined city that predated the ROMAN invasion by 1000 years. There was absolutely no-one there when we visited the city   Outstanding vacation and very easy for AMericans and Canadians and British as English is widely spoken and not enough tourists have been there to ruin their image of Westerners! Great thread Mary

Croatians are actually one of the more prominent immigrant nationalities in South Louisiana, and 2d-3d generation Croatians still dominate the oyster-fishery and seafood-restaurant businesses hereabouts. (Not to mention a number of prominent musicians with Croatian surnames, most notably the great jazz drummer Johnny Vidacovich.)

Therefore, I would expect that a visit to Croatia would also feature some real good eating, at least along the Adriatic coast, if not in the inland part of the country. The people there seem to know more about oysters than any other national group in the world!

No no no..we here on Willapa Bay know more about oysters than the rest of the world. But perhaps they come in second. I am related somehow to the Jusinovich (sp?) clan..does that sound Croatian? A little town, Megler, here that is now gone (site of Astoria Bridge) was settled by Croatian fishermen. There are various groups of ..people from that general Yugoslavian area..various ethnicities..in Tacoma, Anacortes washington... Came to fish I believe.   mg

mg: the personalities and nationalities of the oystermen aside, the oysters themselves here on the Louisiana coast are the world's greatest.

They're also the world's largest, but that's just coincidental ~ they'd be the best even if they were only one or two inches across...
