Lyr ADD: My Rainbow Race (Pete Seeger)

DigiTrad:
BIG MUDDY
DON'T ASK WHAT A RIVER IS FOR
FLOWERS OF PEACE
I MIND MY OWN BUSINESS
MRS. ROOSEVELT
MY GET UP AND GO HAS GOT UP AND WENT
MY OLD BROWN EARTH
OH, HAD I A GOLDEN THREAD
OLD DEVIL TIME
ONE GRAIN OF SAND
PRECIOUS FRIEND
QUITE EARLY MORNING
SAILING DOWN MY DIRTY STREAM
SAILING DOWN MY GOLDEN RIVER
SOUR CREAM
TURN, TURN, TURN or TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON
WALKING DOWN DEATH ROW
WELL MAY THE WORLD GO

Subject: Lyr Req: one more try to tell our rainbow race??
From: jlp
Date: 27 May 05 - 04:35 PM

This is probably a line in the lyrics of the song we are looking for.
Some other lyrics from the song are something like:
"one sky above us"
"one ocean lapping at our shores"
"who could ask for more"
"and because I love you"
"one more try to tell our (?my) rainbow race"...."too young to die"

Also we would like to know who write it and who first sang it?

thanks for any info,
jlp

MY RAINBOW RACE
(Pete Seeger)

CHORUS
One blue sky above us,
One ocean, lapping all our shores.
One earth so green and round,
Who could ask for more?
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.

Some folks want to be like an ostrich;
Bury their heads in the sand
Some hope that plastic dreams
Can unclench all those greedy hands.
Some hope to take the easy way:
Poisons, bombs! They think we need 'em.
Don't you know you can't kill all the unbelievers.
There's no shortcut to freedom
CHORUS

Go tell, go tell all the little children!
Tell all the mothers and fathers, too:
Now's our last chance to learn to share
What's been given to me and you
CHORUS
(then repeat first half of chorus)
One blue sky above us,
One ocean, lapping all our shores.
One earth so green and round,
Who could ask for more?

Another site with essentially the same lyrics says Melanie did it--and also Pete Seeger.

In a hurry. Will get back later to find author. All I can do for now.

Yep. Written by Pete Seeger. Review of 'Melanie at Carnegie Hall' (1973) says it was him.

Pete reports that he wrote this one. In his compendium "Where have all the Flowers Gone," he reports that "I'd just returned from a [1967] tour in Japan. Early a.m., in a Hollywood motel, I pick up a copy of Variety, the enternaiment business bible, famous for headlines like 'Stix nix hix pix.'"

"I leaf through it, see an ad from Yamaha, 'Win a free trip to Japan! World song contest! Fill out these music staves with your song and mail it in to us!'"

"There was a page of blank music staves. I wrote the song and mailed it in. Never heard from them. But I won a prize -- a song I've sung ever since."

Here

Guest: I have looked and looked. I cannot locate the chords anywhere, and I have never heard the song so I cannot transcribe them. However, scroll down alphabetically to "My Rainbow Race" on the page that the link opens to. It seems the sheet music might be available from SingOut. Best I can do for you.

EUREKA

Guest: FINALLY. Go to the following site (use Mr Google). Scroll down to My Rainbow Race--there is a gang of Seeger's stuff with chords on this site. However, it's PDF and so cut and paste just 'scrunchwes up' the chords. I would suggest you have a hard copy of the words and handwrite the chords in. (I am giving two addresses. They are both to the same place.) I will refresh this thread for a week to be sure you see it.
