Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: John MacKenzie Date: 12 Sep 05 - 07:42 AM Romantic poet Gerard de Nerval (1808-1855) who, to justify his taking a lobster on a walk--on a blue silk leash--in the gardens of the Palais Royal, expostulated: "Why should a lobster be any more ridiculous than a dog...or any other animal that one chooses to take for a walk? I have a liking for lobsters. They are peaceful, serious creatures. They know the secrets of the sea, they don't bark, and they don't gnaw upon one's monadic privacy like dogs do. And Goethe had an aversion to dogs, and he wasn't mad." Bet he didn't know they could sing though! Giok |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: Tinker Date: 06 Sep 05 - 08:42 PM Well I scanned Mick the photo of Kendall entertaining four ladies on the couch the night we arrived. He didn't feel missed at all. BG Thanks for sharing the song Dani. Can I have the photo's too ?? Pretty Please ??? I'm really hoping for a copy of Kendall at the head of the table leading the lobster feast. What a great time. Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: Dani Date: 06 Sep 05 - 10:40 AM This is the song I wrote about being the 'surprise' visitor at Sinsull's. I don't think I've ever written a song before! It sure was fun to sing it with you all. It's taken me this long to figure out how to get it off my laptop ; ) Dani (To Molly Malone or Cockles and Mussels) In South Portland city where the lobsters are pretty Our setting's the home of the lovely Sinsull She had wine and chili and cats that were silly She cried, come in and see Him Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Crying come in and see Him Alive, alive-oh Despite Tinker's patience and calm navigation The journey was longer than either had hoped but through singing and chatting and general Mudcatting They had finally, Oh finally Arrived, arrived-oh Arrived, arrived-oh Arrived, arrived-oh They had finally, Oh finally Arrived, arrived-oh Sweet Kendall was quiet Not for this man a riot But wide-eyed and startled it's quite clear he had Expected a Big Mick But instead of the big man With Tinker is Dani Surprise, surprise-oh Surprise, surprise-oh Surprise, surprise-oh With Tinker is Dani Surprise, surprise-oh Big Mick would have been here But swinging in full gear With golden cape waving he's saving the world Squashing foes with his right hand Way down there in Maryland Crying take that, you bastards Organize, organize-oh! Organize, organize-oh! Organize, organize-oh! Crying take that, you bastards Organize, organize-oh! Left at home was poor Janie, who, equally zany, Would quite have fit into this glorious romp But next time she'll be here With a cold glass of near-beer 'Cause singing means feeling Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh 'Cause singing means feeling Alive, alive-oh From Jacqui a sweet kiss And warm fluffy soft gifts and laughter: who's dafter? Herself or The Sins? They're plotting and making and wise men are quaking Crying help us, and keep us Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Crying help us, and keep us Alive, alive-oh To Max be the glory for starting this story with Greenhaus and others who gave us this gift Here's a glass we drink to you May all good be with you For keeping tradition Alive alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh For keeping tradition Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh Alive, alive-oh For keeping tradition Alive, alive-oh |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Date: 02 Aug 05 - 08:08 AM Sent my (film) photos off yesterday, so will prolly have them available on-line before the end of the week. I don't have anywhere other than Mudcat to post them to, so they won't be available for general consumption until the bugs (and I don't mean lobsters!) are out of the system. Jeff still hasn't put up my photos from the May Sinsull Sing and I haven't sent along the June ones yet, because he's not doing anything until all the necessary work on Mudcat is taken care of. Don't forget the uninvited guest -- how DID that elegant looking slug get in the middle of the livingroom floor anywho? Linn |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: jacqui.c Date: 01 Aug 05 - 09:43 PM Pictures have been sent to Jeff but I think he is waiting to add them until they have got the bugs out of the system. Kendall had the last of the lobsters, includung the fridge escapee, in lobster rolls at the hospital after he came round from the biopsy. I don't think the nurses there had ever seen anyone eating that particular delicacy as a 'recovery' food. |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: Tinker Date: 01 Aug 05 - 07:27 PM Yes, sending off Dani and the Lobster Liberation Brigade will be one of my clear memories of the evening. I'm pretty sure someone snapped a photo of Jason will the lobster up on his shoulder being gently stroked and calmed.... Dani and I enjoyed the Captn's chowder the next day along with a side of lobster....Now Kendall I can't judge your chowder against Rudy's (diner) since you "suggested" we add a bit of lobster to yours they were clearly two very different experiences. We'll have to have a retry next time. Although Mary typed "he" I have to admit we ladies (Dani, SINSULL and I) were playing coaster hockey on our own and Kendall had nothing to do with it..... Well, he did set the example by starting the food fight earlier.... but.... Dani and I had a great ride down the coast today and and I am clearly suffering from a bit of culture shock as I move back into major Mama mode. But life is very good. |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: ranger1 Date: 01 Aug 05 - 11:48 AM Yes, SINS, you really did call Kendall and jacqui that late (early?) to grouse about the hidden cache of lobsters. The look on your face was priceless when you realized Jay-boy was sitting at your table talking to one of them. That's the one that was sent, on its own recognizance, to Gnu, via the Atlantic. And yes, we did take the bands off its claws first! Picture Dani's face when she realizes that she's not giving us a ride home, but to the beach to liberate a lobster. She's a good sport, that's for sure. |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 01 Aug 05 - 11:33 AM Yeah, well, when the one you sent to me gets back there, you're gonna see your first chocolate one. Hmmm, you could tell Kendall it's a dessert lobster and save on the rotten fish. Just boil it an extra few minutes. |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: SINSULL Date: 01 Aug 05 - 11:30 AM The last of the house guests left this AM. I had to go to work. Late night supper ar the Olive Garden where he once again misbehaved but no food fight. Flying coasters at 20 paces. What a great weekend. Lots of food (although I no longer consider mussels as food), lots of drink, and lots of music shared by a laughing rowdy crowd. Jets' wife Frances was a pleasant surprise - I believe she even made Tinker blush. No small feat! Something about Frances "going up" and jets "going down"????? Jacqui's desserts were delicious and just right after a seafood feast. Can't say I was pleased to find a cooler full of live lobsters about midnight. Did I really call Kendall at 1 AM to complain? Dani's poem to kendall - I remember some of it- needs to be posted here for posterity. As does Julia's Lewiston Working Girl song. Thank you all for a memorable evening. Love, SINS I had quite a bit of wine and something else in a bottle. |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: ranger1 Date: 01 Aug 05 - 10:24 AM Funny you mention blue, Gnu. The one we set free had bluish tints. We do occasionally have red variants in the live population. Also yellow, and a mix of any of the above colors, referred to as "calico". My best friend's dad used to work at a marine research center that was doing a study on color variations in lobsters, so I know waaaaay too much on the subject. |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: JennyO Date: 01 Aug 05 - 08:14 AM You call that BIG? Why downunder here in Australia, we have LOTS of Big Seafood, including The Big Lobster. We also have The Big Prawn, The Big Oyster, The Big Octopus, The Big Barramundi, The Big Murray Cod and The Big Trout. Rumour has it that there is a Big Yabby somewhere in NSW or Victoria, but nobody has a picture of it. As well as all these, we have lots of other Big Things here, here, here and here. |

Stopped off in Portsmouth on the way home to tour the Gazela -- Gazela Then ambled home to rip the meat out of 5 lobsters. Nope, we didn't let these get away! Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: ranger1 Date: 31 Jul 05 - 10:03 PM One of the crustaceans got a pardon and was set free after midnight. I hear Kendall has been spotted searching Willard Beach for it, just in case it wanders back ashore. And no, it wasn't the one that kept leaping out of the fridge. That's the one that should have been freed, it certainly tried to free itself enough times! |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Jul 05 - 11:41 AM Thanks, Sinsull, for a lovely lobster boil. We certainly had a great time consuming mussels, shrimps, cheese and hardtack, and lobsters fresh from the ocean. There was also cheesecake, apple crisp, ice cream, and a box of chocolate truffles. Someone else has to describe the wines, beer, and harder liquors. I think there was singing afterwards but my last conscious memory was of a lobster standing on it's head, or maybe it was of the large one I was waltzing around with in the back yard. I do hope there were more survivors! JudyD and I have just finished up our lobster omelettes. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: GUEST,Tinker Date: 31 Jul 05 - 12:32 AM Wait til the pictures come to tempt the rest of you to this oasis in the South of Maine. Now I'm not quite sure how it came to be that Kendall was being hand fed peeled shrimp and surrounded by half a dozen women while he waited for his lobster to be delivered to the table....but he never complained about it. Exactly what we needed so very, very badly, provided in exactly the right way with wine, whiskey and song. Dripping with butter and absolutely succulent. ( The lobster boys, the lobster) Oh and there has to be a song in the lobster that escaped being mesmerized by Kendall (Ever see a lobster stand on it's head???) The poor soul that escaped boiling only to keep jumping out of the refrigerator trying to escape each time an unsuspecting soul opened the door. Life is good Tinker |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: jacqui.c Date: 31 Jul 05 - 12:32 AM What a great evening. We're cooking the last two lobsters before going to bed - SINS reckoned she was going to set them free in the morning and kept singing 'Born Free' all night, but Kendall reckoned that they would do better as lobster rolls for lunch. Plenty of good food, copious amounts of falling down water and such good company and music. What more could a girl want? |

Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: ranger1 Date: 17 Jul 05 - 08:46 PM Probably served or cooked by a member of my crew (who also works there when he's not park rangering), and caught by the lobsterman who'll be supplying the lobsters for the feast at Sinsull's. So, Charley, you'll get the exact same lobsters, just without the view! It's a very small world, indeed. |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Jul 05 - 08:22 PM Judy and I drove down to Five Islands and had a lobster dinner on the wharf there, just to keep in practice. Now the view includes traditional fishing boats, the other four islands (you're standing on the 5th one if you're wondering), black-headed seagulls, a few very hungry mosquitoes, and a view of the Sheepscot River. However, Mary's backyard's not bad, especially after several bottles of Guiness, rum, or bourbon. Still, there's something to be said about eating lobsters on the wharf in Five Islands, while sipping our Australian chardonay. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: JennyO Date: 16 Jul 05 - 12:03 PM I hope freda underhill doesn't mind me putting her Lobster Barbie song here. It seems a suitable time... The Tale of Barbie Ellen.. In scarlet shell, with pincers swell, there was a lobster dwelling Made every fisherman drool and sigh Her name was Barbie Ellen Sweet William on the sea shore walked He saw her slender talons Blushed rosy pink with Barbie shoes White flesh like tiny melons Young William called out Barbie love I think my heart you're breakin' Your gingham top, your beady eyes Have sent my thighs a achin' But slowly slowly she crawled off And waggled her tail right at 'im She slid into the frothy sea That hard hearted pink crustacean 'Twas in the merry month of May When green seas were a swellin' Sweet William on his death-bed lay For the love of Barbie Ellen. He sent his servant to the shore, To the rocks where she was a-dwellin', Cried, "Master bids you come to him, If your name be Barbie Ellen." Then slowly, slowly she crawled back, And slowly went she did eye him, And when she pulled the curtains back Said, "Young man, I think you're lyin'. "Oh, yes, I'm sick, I'm very very sick, I'm craving soft crustaceans, my mouth is watering at the sight Of the fleshy Barbie Ellen." "Oh, Ken, where are you, Ken my love Where are you when I need you? Sick William wants to fondle me He's of a different breed dear." And Ken he came in his hiking boots Beside young William lyin', He said William, leave my Barbie love For she's mine for this evenin's fryin' And Barbie's heart did snap in two That both men would deceive her While both men tried to flatter her Her heart was like a cleaver Then lightly crawled she down the stairs, While Ken was in the kitchen 'Tis neither of you will get me now, if my name be Barbie Ellen. She wandered to the wide green seas with never a glance behind her And plunged into the ocean deep Where nary a man could find her and sometimes by the soft moon's light when fisherman are a sleepin' she sits upon the lonely rocks a wailin' and a weepin' will nea man love me for myself they only want to eat me I'll ne'er surrender to their tongues They'll never yet defeat me From William's grave hung a fisherman's line, And from Ken's a copper griddle, While Barbie Ellen e'er does dwell Where nae man dares to meddle.. freda |

Dave Barry, in "Dave Barry Is From Mars and Venus," gives a vivid description of trying not to eat lobster. Somewhere he also makes the point that humans are born with three instinctive fears: fear of falling, fear of loud noises, and fear of lobsters. So of course the ultimate fear is making a loud noise because of falling on a lobster. Personally, I am merely babbling in envy. Enjoy! |
Subject: RE: Lobster Sing at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 13 Jul 05 - 06:39 PM Charley!! A pound and a half? It's lobster. To heck with the diet! I mean, golly gosh, there IS breakfast to consider. I wish I was able to attend.... a 4 pounder with black claws and lots of brewskies. Of course, I would promise to take breakfast at the edge of the yard... NNWW. Absolutely nothing worse than lobster after. But... no flights. Driving down would just take too much time. SOG!! Have a great time... like I need to say that. |

Tom will sing "The Lobster" of course. And Charley, I think, knows "The Old She-Crab" or another variant. I certainly hope I'll have recovered from this cold by then!!! Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Jul 05 - 11:06 AM Another novel way to get into a lobster is with armor-piercing shears. We first saw this being done, by the waiter, at a small place at Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia; the manager confessed it was the only way he could get the diners in and out in a timely fashion and without a mess. Of course, you could always try a Sawsall. Let's send Spaw a virtual claw! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: GUEST,MMario Date: 06 Jul 05 - 11:04 AM want to talk decadence? Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: ranger1 Date: 06 Jul 05 - 10:26 AM Reason #2 why this little ranger doesn't eat lobster: My first summer job was at Small Bros. Wharf in New Harbor, Maine. I was kitchen help/busperson. The decor included a wooden mallet and cutting board on each table. Nowhere in the restaurant was there a poster or placemat with directions for eating the lobster (who knew that food needs instructions?). David also didn't hand out crackers with the lobsters, you had to know to ask for them. Now, picture some poor tourist who has never seen a lobster before trying to figure out how to get into this thing on their plate. They reach across, grab the mallet and start swinging. VERY funny, as long as you aren't standing or sitting anywhere in the vicinity. However, as the busgirl, I got covered in lobster guts too many times to mention. I also had to scrub the walls with steel wool every night at closing. It took weeks to get the smell of dead lobster out of my clothes and pores after I quit. Ick! |

Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Jul 05 - 09:24 AM "Lobster -- butter -- drop cloth -- what more do you need?!?" Why homemade mayonaise, of course! Melted butter, indeed! This discussion reminds me of one of Jon Campbell's immortal lines from his "Winnebago" song: Watch a mobster eat a lobster, are you feeling sad? My family also traditionally boils up a big bowl of potatos, which no one eats but it's there if needed. Of course, the best way to cook lobsters is to build a big bonfire on the beach from drift wood, toss in some stones, let everything burn down to coals, add layers of seaweed and lobsters, corn, and whatevers, cover the whole thing with an old CANVAS tarp, and then dig in after everything has steamed for 20 minutes. YUM! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Date: 06 Jul 05 - 07:58 AM Hmmm . . . we'll never be able to explain to a newbie how to extract the meat from the little claws and the body -- so they'll just have to give them to me and I'll demonstrate so they'll know how to do it the next time! ;-) What's REALLY fun to watch is when a tourist is confronted by a whole lobster on the plate -- beady eyes staring straight up into theirs. I've been very fortunate to be in the vicinity several times (back when I was living in Cape Porpoise) and ended up with the lobster (gratis) after the said tourists ordered a cheeseburger or maybe broiled bluefish. Charley -- if you're doing it RIGHT, there's no room left for corn on the cob (or even potato chips). Lobster -- butter -- drop cloth -- what more do you need?!? Linn |
Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: gnu Date: 06 Jul 05 - 07:36 AM MMario... rolling pin? I find the best for getting the meat out of the little legs for making such culinary delights is a can opener. Just don't tell anyone. And, you can always put a bandaid on your thumb to really sell it. Minds me... SINS... sounds like you might have a few novices at the boil. Best have some peroxide, polysporin and bandages on hand. Nothing will fester faster than a lobster "wound". Nasty little buggers; even after ya b'il 'em. Ahhh, lobster and crackers and beer. Mmmmm. Now, lobster and corn and beer? Hmmmm. Better add a surcharge for some portable outhouses. |

Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Date: 05 Jul 05 - 08:27 PM I've actually done this kind of thing on a regular basis and would be happy to execute the little buggers in the traditional Maine style. My preference is to stick them in the bathtub where they get drunk on the fresh water. Of course if someone wants to use the bathtub for bathing, the lobsters are probably incompatible. It looks like JudyD and I are both available to come. Should we bring an extra stainless steel pot? Are you doing corn on the cob as well? That will take another large pot. Do you want a pickup truck full of seaweed and a tarp? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lobster at SINSULL's From: kendall Date: 05 Jul 05 - 08:17 PM It's easy to hypnotize them. Just hold it in one hand and hub its back with the other. They will go from trying to snap your fingers off to standing on their heads if you do it right. Then, while they are still out, you just pop them into the boiling water and they don't feel a thing. They don't have the same kind of nervous system as we have, and they only react to dangerous stimuli. In other words, they don't feel pain as we do. |
