Subject: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: PoppaGator Date: 15 Aug 05 - 09:55 AM After months of discussion and procrastination, my wife Peggy has begun selling off pieces of her huge collection of antique fabric, via EBay. We're also unloading a few random knick-knacks and assorted junk, er, I mean treasures. I'm getting into this in the role of photographer. Looks like this might be fun and maybe even marginally profitable! Here's a link to one ceramic statuette: cute little stautuette and another to one of the bits of fabric: floral print fabric (You can click the "See Seller's Other Items" button to see our other stuff.) As first-timers, and at the advice of Peggy's sister (a veteran EBay seller) we selected the "US shipping only" option just to keep things simple. However, if someone from overseas really wants something and chooses to bid, we can work out the shipping, so please don't hesitate. There will be plenty more fabric to come over the next weeks and months, including some much larger pieces (bolts of significant yardage). Also, I plan to put my collection of vintage neckties up for bid soon. (Will I really abandon Mudcat? No way ~ but I might change my homepage designation. Not only am I developing a new compulsion to check for EBay bids first thing when I boot up, I also figure it'll be practical to have a homepage that's pretty much always operational. But I'm sure that I will continue to waste way too much time here at the ol' MC.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Aug 05 - 10:26 AM eBay is an interesting place. You can find just about anything there if you know what to call it. Good luck with your sales. There are some items that sell best in "lots" rather than individual pieces. Clothing for example. If there is demand for an item, you will do well. If you're simply trying to unload and recycle stuff that is perfectly good, then offering multiples of items under one auction seems to work best. You don't get a lot per piece, but at least it moves on to a good home. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: PoppaGator Date: 15 Aug 05 - 05:36 PM The tschotskes (sp?) are pretty much a one-time effort, but we'll be moving fabric for the foreseeable future. Peggy's been collecting and hoarding this stuff for twenty years, as long as she has been in the business of producing custom-made slipcovers, throw pillows, drapes, etc. We have many more little one-to-two yard bits, each with one or two repeats of some noteworthy pattern, but we also have lots of larger pieces, even some nice big heavy bolts. I haven't taken much interest in EBay yet, largely because I am most emphatically not a "collector" and do not care a bit about buying much of anything, certainly not anything classified as a "collectable." I'm not even interested in owning the kinds of things I most care about ~ I'm a voracious reader, but I have no desire to own any books, preferring to use the library; I'd rather listen to the radio than buy (and be obligated to organize) CDs; and I don't even have the slightest interest in owning more than one guitar. However, it occurred to me over the weekend, while shooting close-up digital pictures of a few little gewgaws, that I just might get into selling this kind of crap, and doing well at it. My very lack of personal interest in the merchandise might work to my advantage as a trader of marginally worthless but charming/interesting bits of flotsam and jetsam. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: Georgiansilver Date: 15 Aug 05 - 06:32 PM My experience of Ebay is that there is someone out there who will buy absolutely anything! A vulcan bomber was sold recently and a plastic carrier bag......what a range eh? I sell antiques and jewellery on Ebay which I collected over the years..hoping to have an antique shop...now...who needs the shop. Hope you do well Poppa. Best wishes, Mike. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: katlaughing Date: 01 Sep 05 - 12:12 PM I hope they didn't lose all of their fabrics, etc. in the flooding. Glad to know they got out okay, though; that's what is most important. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: Gray D Date: 01 Sep 05 - 07:06 PM But if you change your homepage to E-bay somebody will buy it . . . then you won't have anything to look at on the interweb! I haven't really got the hang of this technolololololigy stuff, have I? Gray D |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking of changing my homepage to EBay From: PoppaGator Date: 01 Sep 05 - 10:52 PM The fabric was mostly in Peggy's place of business, which is definitely underwater and will be mildewed to death by the time we can get to it. Some stuff, including the dozen viintage neckties I had just photographed and was about to put up for auction when we upped and left, is upstairs in our house and could possibly be safe, or maybe not |
