Subject: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 11 Oct 05 - 07:02 PM I am posting the following here and in BS. It is NOT a joke, so I think it might be appropriate to pass it on to as many people as we can collectively reach. I received it in an E-Mail today from a trusted source. Don T. PASS THIS ON Friends, This message is serious and has been passed to us from Cheshire RFU. Could you please cascade as quickly as possible as this came through our NHS web page. For your information, a couple of weeks ago, in the odeon cinema, Festival Park, a person sat on something sharp in one of the seats. When she stood up to see what it was, a needle was found poking through the seat with an attached note saying, "you have been infected with HIV". The Centres for Disease Control in Birmingham, reports similar events have taken place in several other cities recently. ALL of the needles tested HAVE been found positive for HIV. The CDC also reports that needles have been found in the coin return areas of pay phones and coke machines. Everyone is asked to use extreme caution when confronted with these types of situations. All public chairs should be thoroughly but safely inspected prior to any use. A thorough visual inspection is considered the bare minimum. Further more, they ask that everyone notify their family members and friends of the potential dangers, as well. The previous information was sent from hanley police station to all of the local councils in the Staffs area and was interdepartmentally dispersed. We were all asked to pass this to as many people as possible." Julie Gibbons Intermediate Care Tudor Court Rochdale PCT PLEASE PASS ON TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE |

Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Oct 05 - 03:02 PM An old idea, Don. Of course, without the HIV etc. suggestion. In our grade schools many years ago, teachers expected to find a thumbtack on their chair the first day of school. Good teachers (those we learned to like) would put on an act of some kind- start to sit, then remember something and go to the board, then back to the chair and so on. 'Bad' teachers would pick up the tack without comment and proceed with the lessons. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 12 Oct 05 - 03:14 PM Gargoyle, I have no connection with Wysiwig (Sue) whatever. My Mudcat moniker cones from the fact that I use it as a stage name when gigging. O.K. I got caught because the source of the E-Mail was a person I trust, and I posted in good faith. I suppose nobody ever took you for a ride. It must be wonderful up there on your high horse, judging other folk you know nothing about. Thanks a bunch you smartarse. Don T. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 12 Oct 05 - 05:18 PM The whole point of these hoaxes is that they are designed to be received from somebody you trust. Most of us have learned the hard way. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: GUEST,Jon Date: 12 Oct 05 - 07:10 PM Aint that true PFE. I bit once. Really sad tale of a girl dying if I remember right and some message to pass it on. I think the other things with hoaxes (as I bleive this one of Don''s is) is the stir up emotions and could just be possible but do push things a bit in terms of imagination. It is not impossible that someone could leave an HIV infected needle aroud. There are I think in the UK one case even of a sort of wilful infection (sex, knowing the disease was there - not to give it but knew the risks for the partner - maybe love was too much to be honest - it might not have been more than that from what I remember) but whether there would be a campaign of HIV suffers or whether others would manage to get a needles deliberately infected start to become more stretching the imagination. I think it fair to suggest one should be careful say sitting in a park bench and that such an object may have been accidentaly left (with no letter or haha youve got it) is something we should consider. Hopefully we don't need to spam for that though. I know of a case where this (prick of a needle) did have to go through the worries. I know the then Victim Support worker very well and she did tell me (without details that I would know who the kid was, family was, etc. - just to know it happened to someone) very well. She is Pip, my mother. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Rapparee Date: 12 Oct 05 - 11:01 PM I've reached the point where I check out each and every thing that tells me to "pass it on." Chain messages ("Send this within 20 minutes to everyone Earth or your gonads will turn purple and all your skin will fall off") I ignore. And somehow I can't believe that I'll be eternally damned if I don't tell everyone in my address book that Jesus loves them unless they are French, gay, Republican, female, a banjo player, a liberal, and so on. Sometimes I'll take the time to check Snopes or one of the virus encyclopedias and then gently tell the person who sent me the message of their error. But mostly I'll just delete it. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Grab Date: 13 Oct 05 - 09:24 AM Don, maybe they passed it on in good faith too. But there are a few bits of elementary net-smarts like that which come up in every "internet for dummies" list. For the record:- 1) If you get an email that tells you to pass it on, don't. 2) If you get an email that says "reply to be removed from list", don't. 3) If you get an email that says "reply to give us your bank details", don't. 4) If you get an email that says "reply to get $20 million", don't. In fact, if you get any email where you cannot personally vouch for the correctness of its contents, just delete it. Graham. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Wesley S Date: 13 Oct 05 - 09:40 AM So if you do pass along a hoax abd find out about it what then ? I had a customer send me a "missing child" notification that has been floating around the internet for years. I sent her a link to the truthorfiction.com story about it. But what I really wanted to do was send a "reply to all" instead of just her. I hope people feel compelled to send out the truth once they find out about it. But I imagine that most people just ignore it. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Peace Date: 13 Oct 05 - 10:00 AM 'If you get an email that says "reply to get $20 million", don't.' Grab, are you implying that the cheque from Nigeria is not in the mail? This really sucks. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Wesley S Date: 13 Oct 05 - 10:43 AM Actually Peace - The check IS in the mail. Just be careful when you open it up. They've been sending infected needles in the envelopes. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK. Danger warning. This is serious. From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Oct 05 - 10:53 AM Invariably if you send a "reply to all" with the link to the spoof information you'll find one smart ass who has to argue about it with you--and sends it back to all in the process. It is probably the person who originally sent it who wants to argue. I quit trying to send the corrected information after that happened a couple of times. I got caught years ago on a fairly benign one, about Kurt Vonnegut's advice to "wear sunscreen." It was a charming little essay and I sent it to a friend, who sent back the information that it was a hoax. It turns out that Vonnegut has seen this hoax and thinks it's pretty funny, saying that it's something he could have written himself. I can live with deleting occasional ill-considered postings from friends. I just wish they'd use "BCC" when they send it and remove all of the layers so I don't have my email added to this accumulation that is all going to go in some spammer's address list soon. SRS |
