Seems to me like the climate's been getting just a tad too cold, and I don't mean the temperature, whether you measure it in Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvins, of what-have-you. I mean the social-sexual climate. Ready for a new word boys and girls? It's called BIPHOBIA and it ain't at all pretty! Just ask Holly Near, or Joan Baez, or -- well, go ahead fill in the name. Biphobia is the antipathy bisexuals get from the lesbian and gay communities. It ranges from mild ridicule to severe derision and complete exclusion. (The antipathy bisexuals get from the straight community is just plain old fashioned homophobia.) Holly Near and Joan Baez were on the receiving end of biphobia, particularly from lesbians, when it became know that each was bi. Holly had previously been thought of as lesbian and Joan as straight, so each was viewed somewhat differently. Joan was perceived as a coward who just couldn't face her homosexuality, while Holly was seen as a traitor to her sisters. In both instances, however, the sentiment was the same.

I don't really see why anyone would want to have their sexual orientation made public and why anyone's sexual orientation would be of interest to someone who didn't have a sexual interest in that person.

Straight people make their sexual orientation public all the time. It's considered the norm, and if they don't there is always the suspicion that they are queer. Lesbians and gay man simply want to be afforded the right and opportunity to display their own sexual orientation without the society holding it against them. What makes me angry is that many people in the lesbian and gay communities are ready and willing to treat bisexuals the same way they, lesbians and gays, have been treated by straights.

As for not seeing why "anyone's sexual orientation would be of interest to someone who didn't have a sexual interest in that person," why was there so much general public interest in J. Edgar Hoover's sexual orientation? Or Liberace's? Or Martina Navratalova's? Or Ellen DeGeneres's? Could it be that there are a lot more gay men and lesbians out there than anyone will acknowledge? Maybe there are just a lot more bisexuals.

Ain't no such word as "biphobia." It's a construct with little or no relationaship to the Greek. Besides, the "phobia" suffix would mean "fear of". "Hatred of", which I suspect is what is wanted here, would have the prefix "miso", as in "misogyny".

The word for hatred of bisexuals would be something like "misoermafroditism" for the condition and "misoermafrodit" for a person who hated bisexuals.

Personally though, I agree with Peace. If you're a decent human being I don't care what you do in your spare time; if you're a shit as a human being, I'll think you're a shit no matter what you do alone or with others.

It's always been my understanding that the current use of the word "homophobia" has changed from it's original implication -- that the reason some "straights" were intolerant of gays was because, so the arguement went (and was just accepted as true), in reality those "straights" were actually afraid (hence "phobia") of their own homosexual proclivities.

It now means "hatred or intolerance" of gays -- no relationship whatsoever to "phobia". But even trying to point out the error was too politically incorrect, thus "phobia" is now a suffix with a new politcal meaning -- like "-gate" tagged to the end of every scandal.

...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Semantics aside, it seems to me that prejudices in the identified gay community against bisexuals are largely based on intellectual notions of politically correct sexuality that some outspoken individuals have decided are right for everybody. Prejudices in the identified straight world are largely based on religious biases, historical precedent and plain old ignorance.

Either way, both are intellectual/emotional constructs that deny the variety and richness of human experience by attempting to corral peoples' desires into carefully defined categories and attach moral judgements to them. Nothing new about that. It's crying a shame that humanity's bad habit has been ressurected once again by some whose near brethren in the bedroom have suffered terribly from its oppression for so many centuries in the past.

The only time that I can remember that I was dismayed about someone's sexual orientation was in connection with Flip Wilson, an American comedian who was very popular in the 70s. I never met the man, of course, but I was very taken by him and one day it occurred to me to wonder whether he might be gay - and I thought, What a waste!
