Subject: RE: BS: I'll Know Hell Has Frozen Over When.... From: Peace Date: 26 Oct 05 - 08:45 PM He never has said anything I understand. EVER. Yeah, a word here and there, but not a complete sentence. Here for example: "And let me say in conclusion, thanks for the kids. I learned an awful lot about bathtub toys - about how to work the telephone. One guy knows - several of them know their own phone numbers - preparation to go to the dentist. A lot of things I'd forgotten. So it's been a good day." -- January 21, at a Head Start center in Catonsville, Maryland Or this: "Somebody - somebody asked me, what's it take to win? I said to them, I can't remember, what does it take to win the Super Bowl? Or maybe Steinbrenner, my friend George, will tell us what it takes for the Yanks to win - one run. But I went over to the Strawberry Festival this morning, and ate a piece of shortcake over there - able to enjoy it right away, and once I completed it, it didn't have to be approved by Congress - I just went ahead and ate it - and that leads me into what I want to talk to you about today..." --March 4, at a fund-raising lunch in Tampa, Florida Even the Babe couldn't do it as well as Bush. Remember, "If people don't want to go to the baseball game, there's nothin' you can do to stop them." Go pee Bobert. You are gonna hurt something if you tie it in a knot waiting for Bush to make sense. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'll Know Hell Has Frozen Over When.... From: Raedwulf Date: 27 Oct 05 - 02:55 PM You've never seen the following then... "First, we postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass. If they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving? I think we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for souls entering hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, then you will go to hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and souls go to hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant. Two options exist: If hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose. If hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over." Ultimately, then, this all resolves down to the following postulate: "So which is it? If we accept the quote given to me by "someone" during Freshman year, "that it will be a cold night in hell before I sleep with you" we must take into account whether or not I have succeeded in having sexual relations with her. If I have, then Option 2 cannot be true. Thus, hell is exothermic & all Hell will break loose in due course. If I have slept with her, then obviously option 2 is true, & Hell is endothermic. So in order to save the world from an ever expanding Hell, she really ought to do the decent thing..." |

Subject: RE: BS: I'll Know Hell Has Frozen Over When.... From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Oct 05 - 01:48 AM A diversion for Bill D. At Gustave Doré you'll find approximately 60 Doré etchings from the Inferno complete with Canto/Line citations and text extracts. The downloadable Hi Resolution images run 1.3 MB to around 1.6 MB, so if you want to print one six feet tall you probably can. The smaller image that you get if you just click on the thumbnail are more normal 0.5 MB or so files. There was a linked separate page with explanations of the citation markups, but I didn't spot the link when I checked the clicky. A nice sampling if you're into Doré's Inferno etchings. An additional 25 or so images (page 7 & on) give a sampling of some of his other kinds of work. John |

Subject: RE: BS: I'll Know Hell Has Frozen Over When.... From: Bill D Date: 28 Oct 05 - 02:04 PM ahh...thanks, John! I knew there ought to be some big ones online, I just didn't look long. I have had the large books of Inferno and Purgatory/Paradise with Doré illustrations since about 1957 (not in A-1 condition, but I was a poor student) I went into an old bookstore (Drawver's, on West Douglas, if you have been in Wichita that long...now Al's) in the early 60s, and old Mr. Drawver had this BIG book in a glass case...maybe 12" x15" by 5" thick, of the complete Doré etchings. I sort of pointed at it, just to say "wow, that's impressive", but before I could open my mouth, he said "That one's MINE!" *grin* I think it was the only thing in the store that was NOT for sale! |

From: Amos Date: 28 Oct 05 - 04:30 PM Isn't it faskinatin' how that big furry guy in the back, representing all Evil Incarnate, is wearing horns (the traditional symbol of a cuckold, one whose mate has been unfaithful) and sports big leathery wings; but aside from those two things and his shadowy llghting, he looks a lot like the Jove of the Sistine Chapel. What is it with bat wings versus bird wings? Angels are always showing off their snowy feathered wings, and demons their leathery bat wings. And is the horns bit supposed to get you to associate marital fidelity with Cosmic Good in some way, or what IS up wid dat? A |

Subject: RE: BS: I'll Know Hell Has Frozen Over When.... From: Bill D Date: 28 Oct 05 - 05:54 PM ok, John...the link worked when I tested it, but maybe it was because I already had the image in my cache...or maybe because I use the Proxomitron as a web filter...which can keep sites from doing things like re-directiing or blocking direct links.... I can see why they would restrict full access to big images, though. |

Subject: RE: BS: I'll Know Hell Has Frozen Over When.... From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Oct 05 - 09:09 PM Bill D - Most of the larger online "good art" collections either block, or at least request, no links to individual images. Generally I don't mind trying to cooperate. A disgusting few attempt to block saves of large images. I believe it's the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco that loads all large images tiled. They don't indicate that they object to saving, but if you just right click and save you only get 1/16 of the image. ARC generally blocks saves only for living artists, who deserve the commissions, so I don't mind them trying. John |
