Subject: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: Mr Red Date: 13 Nov 05 - 09:58 AM I was considering getting a set of four (20 GBP) as a Christmas present. Anyone tried thses plug-in gadgets? Any comment on effects on aged dogs? They claim to be safe for humans but in a bedroom for 8 hours? They claim to work on rats but that is not the problem I am trying to solve. |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: GUEST,Chongo Chimp Date: 13 Nov 05 - 02:28 PM If you could please describe the device in some detail...? Does it make a high-frequency sound that bothers the mice or something? If so, it might bother chimps too. We have good ears. - Chongo |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: Sorcha Date: 13 Nov 05 - 02:41 PM Our daughter tried them in her house...said they deter spiders and other bugs but not mice. Don't seem to bother her dogs at all. |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: Kaleea Date: 13 Nov 05 - 03:13 PM I'm not sure if it is the same type of gadget, but . . . while I have not personally purchased one, but did personally observe the following. Back in our poor starving Music major college days, some friends of mine moved into a rental with some unwanted inhabitants. My friends bought a little electronic box that made some sort of high frequency pitched sound which I believe was called "super sonic," or some such thing. It was supposed to repel all manner of vermin from their home--well, not the allegedly human types, anyway. The box could be adjusted to a variety of settings so that if creatures were not deterred, one could set it more "super sonic"ly and then for sure it would deter all the evil creepy crawly bugs & mice & rats & whatever. They tried it at various settings, and there were creepy crawly things creepily crawling all over the box. $9.95 + tax down the drain. Their young son decided to use it for a school science project, and his dad enlisted some Speech Path majors from our schools' audiology dept. to determine the frequencies of the sounds, and the boy even videotaped his experiments. He brought in a variety of creatures which he released directly upon the box, and I helped to hold the videocamera. His mom was not amused! I, however, found it quite comical to see my gal friend screaming at the bugs & her hubby & son running about attempting to catch some scary creatures worthy of horror flicks. It seemed to deter nothing of the crawling persuasion. It did, however, make the neighbor's dog go nuts on a couple of settings, which their son found out by taking it outside for further experiments. He won a prize for the Science project. The sonic box went into the garbage can. |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: Georgiansilver Date: 13 Nov 05 - 04:24 PM Why waste money when a piece of wood with a razor blade standing upright in it will do? Place it outside the mouses hole with a piece of cheese on the other side of the blade and the mouse will put it's head over the blade and take the cheese. Repeat this for four days but on the fifth day put NO CHEESE over the blade and the mouse will come and put it's head over the blade and move its head from side to side saying "Where is my ch......" |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: M.Ted Date: 14 Nov 05 - 09:24 AM I had a a mouse problem once, and someone gave me a device that allegedly made the kind of noise described above--The person who gave it to me believed that it worked-- I tend to think that the fact that I captured twenty two of the creatures in my ingeneous plastic wastebasket trap, and then plugged every hole in my apartment with steel wool was the deciding factor-- The ingeneous plastic wastebasket was not my idea, exactly--it just happened to be underneath the pipe which mice used for access to my domicile. Serendipitously, it was too deep for a mouse to jump out of--A bit of peanut butter(a food which I do not generally eat), made the wastebasket an even more appealing destination. Day after day, this device continued to capture and retain mice--a testiment to the fact that they are creatures of drearily predictable habit. This is probably why we don't like to have them around much. |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 14 Nov 05 - 11:24 AM Several years ago I bought two of these, one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. (We get very dry summers here, and bathrooms attact "waterbugs" a cleaner version of the cockroach.) After that, we didn't see any more waterbugs. The unit in the kitchen seemed to help, though I can't prove it. After a while it began to emit a steady, audible clicking, and I threw it away. Now it is fall, and we are having the traditional invasion of the home by mice, looking for a centrally-heated place for the winter. We've put out the mouse traps and will probably kill two. That should solve the problem for another year. I checked tried to check Consumer Reports ratings for you, but I couldn't find the product. Apparently they have never tested it. As for your gift, if somebody's place is overrun with mice and they are seriously bothered, give them the units, and don't wait till Christmas. It is worth 20 pounds to have a clean home. If it seems to be the annual invasion by two mice, tell them to put out the mousetraps. (Peanut butter makes great bait.) |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: Mr Red Date: 15 Nov 05 - 08:06 AM Yea she has tried peanut butter and rates it higher than cheese. I can't say too much to her as it will be a Christmas Present. The devices look to be little more than UK mains plugs with a few loudspeaker type holes and an LED to indicate they are on. They are ultrasonic and claim to be safe for humans and pets. In the light of recent research I doubt they sing. I will suggest the bucket - she is a gardner and farmer's doughter and still lives on the farm. She is not at all squeemish about killing them but they do make a noise and wake her up when the are in the death throws and smell if they drag the traps into crevices. A deterrent seemed like a good idea. I will be back with more specific details. |

Subject: RE: BS: electronic Mouse deterrent - any 1 tried From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Nov 05 - 07:53 AM Can't remember what brand we bought. (Package with the unused ones are up in the guest room.) Only have one plugged in -- have a problem finding outlets where they fit properly. We've had the one plugged in for a number of years. Totally useless as near as I can figure. No effect on the flying squirrels (which is what I was hoping for). None on insects, either. On the other hand, the cats are unaffected and so are we. There's a very quiet clicking noise in the guestroom. Maybe one needs to use all of them? Oh, it also didn't appear to upset the bats in the ceiling either. Linn |
