Subject: Folklore: 'Born To Run': Senate Annoyed From: Ron Davies Date: 24 Nov 05 - 02:57 PM This from the Washington Post 21 November 2005 (I figure just this once we can cite the admittedly left-leaning Post in a political context.) A plan to honor the 30th anniversary of Springsteen's Born to Run has evidently fallen afoul of Congressional annoyance that the Boss was a strong Kerry man. So the Senate did not pass the otherwise routine resolution. The writer of the article now predicts other Congressional comment on music: Pro-war Republicans defeat Rep. John Murtha's resolution honoring Eric Burdon and the Animals' 40th anniversary of "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place". Current country singers Big and Rich are saluted on Senate floor--"We just identify with the name" say Bush supporters. Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Valerie Plame affair vetoes the playing of "Secret Agent Man" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" during breaks in hearings. Liberal Democrats demand hearing on playing of Muzak versions of "Stairway to Heaven" in government elevators, arguing it violates separation of church and state. With a unanimous vote, House outlaws radio airplay of "Seasons in the Sun" and "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" because well, it's just the right thing to do. Any more suggestions? |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 'Born To Run': Senate Annoyed From: Dave'sWife Date: 24 Nov 05 - 06:46 PM I guess they forgot how Ronald Reagan co-opted 'Born In the USA' as his theme song for his re-election campaign until somebody explained that it wasn't a hap-happy 'Morning In America' type song! Springsteen's music was good enough for the Republicans to steal without permission then but now it doesn't deserve a routine resolution? Go figure. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 'Born To Run': Senate Annoyed From: pdq Date: 24 Nov 05 - 08:16 PM It's a joke, folks. As in politicians are "Born to Run", eh? I understand Ted Kennedy fought the resolution to honor the 40th anniversary of "Travelin' Man", as did Bill Bennett when the 70 anniversary of "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" came around. Then there was Barney Franks' objection to "Brown's Ferry Blues"... |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 'Born To Run': Senate Annoyed From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 25 Nov 05 - 07:05 PM I never could understand why the 'Ruling Parliament of the Land' wastes its time with this nonsense when it could be doing its job, like lowering taxes for the rich, etc. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 'Born To Run': Senate Annoyed From: Dave'sWife Date: 26 Nov 05 - 12:03 AM Here's what BACKSTREETS had to say ( a long-running Springsteen fanzine.. I used to subscribe but it got kinda boring - just long lists of what he played at each tour stop and 6 rebiews of the same show!) >>>MAYBE THEY VOTED FOR IT BEFORE THEY VOTED AGAINST IT? If you think the only resolutions before Congress these days are about the war in Iraq, think again. Democratic Senators from New Jersey Frank Lautenberg and Jon Corzine introduced a resolution to honor Bruce Springsteen, upon the 30th Anniversary of Born to Run, for his lengthy career and his contributions to our culture. "Resolutions like this pass all the time in the U.S. Senate," said a Lautenberg spokesman, "usually by unanimous consent." Thing is, according to the Associated Press, the effort "was shot down Friday by Republicans who are apparently still miffed a year after the Boss lent his voice to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry." Now, we're all for anything that honors Bruce Springsteen and his work. But seriously, you guys all have more important issues to address these days, right? Right? (Read the A.P. story) And perhaps now that Corzine is leaving the Senate to become governor of the great state of New Jersey, he can revisit the efforts to make "Born to Run" the state song. "Baby, this town rips the bones from your back..." Anyone? Anyone? -November 20, 2005<< Oddly enough - there reall has been a movement afoot for years to try and make 'Born to Run' the New Jersey State Song! Some NJ radio stations till play it every Friday at 5 O'clock the way other radio stations play "Working for the Weekend.' Obvuosly 'Born To Run' is a better friday night choice than anything Loverboy ever recorded, but the State song? Here's a link to the AP Story on the subject: Republicans refuse to give Bruce Springsteen his glory days |

Subject: RE: Folklore: 'Born To Run': Senate Annoyed From: Ron Davies Date: 27 Nov 05 - 10:33 AM PDQ--Sorry, I don't get the connection between Bill Bennett and "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down". What did I miss? I figure every member of Congress would be in favor of banning "The Sounds of Silence". |
