According to Canada's opposition leader and potential Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, this should all be stopped. Same-sex marriage will undermine our social fabric, destroy the family, and who knows what. We have had it for a couple of years now, and of course the world came to an end, and darkness spread over the world. Heterosexuals suddenly began getting divorced, and single people started living together in unhallowed unions.

The most surprising thing about this wedding must be the venue- Belfast. A lesbian friend of mine worked in the city in the 70s, during the worst of the troubles, and she said that Belfast had to be 'the worst city in the world to be gay in'. Truly times have changed.

Good for them, I say. Though the concept of "tying the knot" had me wincing at some of the imagery. But on a serious note - this is not "marriage", not in the religious sense, so let the fanatics calm down. It is simply society's recognition of a relationship.

It's not Elton that is coming out of the closet, but society itself - no longer pretending that such relationships don't exist or that they are somehow sick.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. It annoys me that people have nothing better to do than try and tell others how they should or shouldn't run their lives. When I want to study how long, healthy, loving relationships, I look to my friends and family for examples. It seems that two of the longest, healthest and happiest relationship that I know of happen to be two gay male couples.

When I asked a member of one the couples, they both devoted to each other for over 15 years, what he thought of San Francisco Mayor allowing gay marriages back a year or so ago, he said that that would be great because as it stands my friend would not be allowed to visit his partner if his partner was placed in an intensive care unit in the hospital. Hearing this opened my eyes.

It seems to me that this world has gotten things confused. Hate and war are the "in" things to believe and support. Love and tolerance are considered dangerous and subversive. Doesn't make sense to me and I won't hold my breath that it will make sense any time soon either.

I scoffed loudly when I heard that our beloved leader Anthony Charles Lynton Blair sent his congratulations to Elton John and David Furnish on the occasion of their union.
I notice that he didn't do the same for the first male homosexual couple to do this in Belfast.
The Labour Party does not exist in Northern Ireland and to do so would have gained him no votes, so why bother.
But Elton is famous, and Tony has always tried to toady up to pop celebrities, hoping it would gain him votes, and a few sycophantic headlines.
This is all about TB preparing his place in history, and garnering votes for the Labour party!

You may be mistaken about that. I have read a good deal of alternative literature that suggests he WAS married, to the woman depicted as Mary Magdalene in the gospels (edited after the fact books) that the church priests in Constantinople eventually decided to make the "official" version. They wanted to cast things in a way that suited their particular viewpoint and their power structure, and they wanted to reduce Mary's importance in the Christian pantheon considerably. They also wanted to reinforce the rather new notion of a celibate priesthood.

Jesus was referred to as "Rabbi" in the texts on several occasions. I don't believe you could be a rabbi in that society unless you were married...to a woman, needless to say.

I think , if I read my history right, that Jesus probably was married. The reason being is that ALL men got married in that day. If I may interrupt here. It does not say that in the Bible. Many scholars have posited the possibility of a homosexual relationship--even argued the probability of such a relationship. However, the Bible itself doesn't state it in a claer manner. Whether or not it ever did (before the editing and rewrites) is beyond my knowledge. If one googles

there is much argument to choose from. As is usual, some arguments better than others. The question is also alluded to in the Nag Hammadi (sp?) which I read years ago.

As to His possible marriage: there is good argument in favour of such a belief. the wedding at Cana is fairly enticing. Traditionally, the groom served wine at Jewish weddings. It was very strange for a Jewish man (especially a rabbi) to be unmarried. What all this means I do not know. I think I never shall.

Preface - I wish Elton and David a wonderful union. And, Rosie O'Donnell is as good a mother as any child could be brought up by.

Now, here's the scoop. What could be more "in the face" than the largest Gay Parade on earth being PARADED through downtown Toronto and on the news and in the newspapers? It's just rude! What is not to understand? I was brought up to repect others. Perhaps some Golden Rule might apply here?

Pierre Trudeau said it was time the government got out of the bedrooms of the nation... he did not say the bedroom should be paraded down Main Street. Some polite good manners in the gay community might help.

It's important to note that that bit in Leviticus doesn't say to not be gay - what it says is that you shouldn't have sex with men. So straight men and lesbians are OK - it's straight women and gay men that are sinners.

The "in your face" part of the gay tradition is a reaction to the years, centuries of closeting. It may very well fade away as acceptance grows. On the other hand, there are a lot of Canadian exhibitionists (cold weather is another form of closeting) -- we now seem to go in for Caribbean parades and gay parades at the drop of a flashy feather. It should all be seen against the historical backdrop of a really, really boring country.

Ebbie, thanks. I am not a bible scholar, or even a devout browser, I am referring to the information given me via an NPR interview with the current poet laureate. He read the passage regarding David's lamentations of his beloved boy friend. David goes on to say explicitly what they did together and how it was far better and sensuous than it was with a woman.

If the kid's name was Johnaton or not I am not sure but to recognize this passage as anything but sexual would have to be done with fingers crossed and blinders on.

Peace, I belong to a Reform congregation. My Rabbi tends to swing a bit more conservative which is OK with me. The Torah clearly states as he has read it to me that the torah is against homosexuality. Reform Jews who don't buy into this are like all other too far-left liberals who tend to make up their own rules for their own agendas.
