Actually I agree with some of what you said, Giok. Thanks for the clarification and good wishes.

Having has my first at just a month past my 17th b-day, I can say, now, I am glad I had my kids early, as I'd not like to be a full-time parent, now!:-) My grandson keeps me busy enough to know that. As to enjying life....well, maybe I was a bit selfish, but I did a lot of enjoying when my kids were young, some it probably a bit "wild oats sowing" but we're none the worse for it.:-)

The only thing I compare, today, is my friends in their 50's and 60's who still have children in school and me in my 50's, ready for when Rog can retire, to roam the country and have a blast visiting Mudcatters, searching up ancestors' gravesites and such, and writing more of my adventures, etc.

luvyakat

All the best,

kat

oh gee, what does this say about birth control pills? My boobs doubled in size when I started taking them and then they doubled again after I gave birth. Ah! the wonders of mother's milk too. Or could this really have been a case for Flowers for Algernon? Am I only half as smart as I thought I was?

Marriage didn't make any difference in how my kids turned out, in fact I am positive they turned out to be the fine people they are precisely because I got out of two very bad marriages when they were little

Ditto, kat. Thanks for sharing that. I've raised 3 healthy, happy and successful sons (handsome, too, in my obviously biased opinion!) on my own. I was 19 when my oldest was born. ANd yes, their earliest years were quite difficult and tumultous at times, but things definitely improved when I found the courage to act on my own common sense and got rid of the biggest, most trying infants of all (ie their fathers).

My kid's dads gave 'em only 2 things worth mentioning --- the seed that got 'em growing, plus a living example of how NOT to be a good partner or parent.

As it is unfortunately the girl who has to carry the can, I would hope that they would try to be more responsible, in the face of the typical irresponsibility of my own sex.

Giok, I do understand where you're coming from but geez - that's such a nauseatingly familiar double standard! It does appear to be slowly changing though, praise be! The younger generations do seem to have a different attitude. All 3 of my oh-so-disadvantaged (??) sons, for example, have grown up to be most responsible and committed when it comes to their relationships with girls and the products of their own genitals. So I'm proud to say, with 99.9% confidence, that I know I won't become a grandma till they are ready to be wonderful dads!

Yep Kat know what you're saying, I'm real happy things worked out for all concerned, and I wish you all continued happiness.
It is difficult to make a point without personal illustrations, and this is where I find myself, I have only facts figures and anecdotal evidence to go on. However I do find the irresponsibility of so many of today's youngsters worrying, not just on the basis that all old fogies like me think all kids are irresponsible.
I carefully said in my original post that has aroused the ire of a GUEST, [why do they log out if they feel so strongly?]"young women" which is what I meant, and by that I suppose I mean teenagers.
I feel as though they are in many cases tying themselves down too early and missing out on so many of lifes opportunities. Many people say, "Have you kids young, and enjoy life later" but when later arrives you're older and the experiences aren't the same. When you have experiences when you're older, you've probably already heard it described by other people, and this causes you to compare and contrast your experience against theirs.
Still as they say, you can't please everybody so I shall give up on this one and let people make up their own minds.
Giok.

Brian/TouLouse, I did see the tongue-in-cheek, meant to put a **BG** after my posting and forget. Sorry 'bout that; well written for a chauvenist.**BG**

Giok, I think you will find that there are more women of older ages, who are also having babies without marriage and/or a partner. My daughter happens to be one of them and let me tell you, she was damn careful. Birth control measures failed her the one time in a year in which she had relations; seeing my grandson it is obvious why...he needed to be in this world. She is a mature 28 and doing a fine job of raising him with the help of Grandma and Granddad and I am very proud of her. Her pediatrician told her a child needs three key people from birth if they are to get a good start on life. The doctor went on to say, it didn't matter what the combo was, i.e. mom+dad+grandparent; grandparents+dad; uncle/aunt+mom/dad, etc. My grandson is one of the brightest, most confident two year olds around. I know it is not always possible for moms to have grandparents to live with, but those older women who are having babies are providing, I am sure, much stabler environments than other circumstances may dictate.

Sometiimes it is much worse for the kids to stay in a family which has parents fighting all of the time. My other daughter, who married, waited to have kids, then had twins seven years ago, is now looking into divorce because it would be healthier for everyone involved if she and her husband didn't live together.

And, there are exceptions with teen moms. I know from experience. Marriage didn't make any difference in how my kids turned out, in fact I am positive they turned out to be the fine people they are precisely because I got out of two very bad marriages when they were little. Finding my Rog, marrying him and him adopting all three has had a very good effect on how they turned out, too, BUT I insisted on living together, FIRST, as one never knows another person well until they've lived with them. Didn't have to teach me that more than twice!

Off my soapbox, now. I just don't like generalisations on this subject.:-)

Yes *daylia* my knowledge of genetics does stretch as far as knowing that it takes two to make babies, even though both parties need not be present at the conception ☺
I was illustrating a point and not writing a thesis.
As it is unfortunately the girl who has to carry the can, I would hope that they would try to be more responsible, in the face of the typical irresponsibility of my own sex.
It is not all due to the UK habit of providing housing for single mothers, that young single girls have babies, although if one believes the scare stories in the gutter press it is quite prevalent.

Psst Kat...

I DO hope you took my little thing that I had written in the tongue-in-cheek manner that it was intended ;-). It was originally written for a local arts & entertainment publication, where I was to be writing a "men's column", with a corresponding female article on the facing page. Each of us were instructed to take it from a sexist point of view purely for the purpose of having a little fun from a He-said-She-said perspective. Or, as the editor said to me, to see how many Femi-Nazi's (his word, not mine) that I could piss off each week...

My personal opinion? I love big boobs and big brains both :-)

FYI

Single mothers

The figures also show that the number of babies born to single mothers is about 10% higher than it was 10 years ago.

In 1993, 32.2% of births were outside marriage. In 2003,this figure stood at 41.4%.

Data for 2002 showed around 90% of births to teenagers occurred outside of marriage.

This compares to 63% of births to women aged 20-24 and 36% of births to women aged 25-29.

Norman Wells, director of Family and Youth Concern, said the trend in babies born to single mothers and women in cohabiting relationships was concerning. "Marriage is more than just a piece of paper," he said.

"Cohabiting relationships are much less stable than marriages and cohabitations with children are even more likely to break up than childless ones."

He estimates about 40% of lone parent families are created through the break up of cohabiting unions.

"Children born to cohabiting parents are more likely to experience disruptions in their family life which can have negative consequences for their emotional and educational development," he explained.

He said that statistically, children born to single parents were at higher risk of mental and emotional problems and were more likely to have trouble in school.

He called on the government to review its policy on teenage pregnancy and to do more to encourage the traditional family unit.

Not a thing you can just say "whatever" about.

Ah GUEST 01:24 you do like to put you own agenda forward when being critical.
It is difficult to portray sadness in a post so I will excuse your misconstruction of my post.
I have seen the evidence of the behaviour I mentioned in my post first hand.
You should perhaps try working with todays youngsters, then you too would be apalled and saddened by their lack of ambition.
One expects lack of experience in youth, it's part of what being young is about, it is sad though to see it coupled with ignorance.
Thank you for the lifestyle advice which I assume you are well qualified to give!

John says, "Too many poorly educated or motivated young women seem to regard what is between their legs is more important that what is between their ears."

Sorry, John, but if a woman is poorly educated and unmotivated, her best chance of survival is to use what is between her legs. Besides that, women have been conditioned to believe that their best chance of success is to marry a rich man. This has been going on for quite a long time.

Hopefully, times are changing but when you see the ruch for silicone and plastic surgery, you wonder if anything has changed, after all.

Here is something I wrote a couple years ago...

Why Smarter Women Have Smaller Breasts

Think about it fellas, you know it's true. Walk into a library or research lab or any typically intelligent area, and check out the female workers (like you don't already). Make an observation. Now go to a spot that is less MENSA intensive, like a retail purse store or fast food restaurant. Make a similar observation. I have completed extensive research on this (spending almost an entire lunch hour) and have discovered that, in fact, IQ levels seem to be inversely proportional to bra size. Not in every case, mind you, but still a high enough majority to make a difference.

Personally, I have always thought that this developed through the stereotyping of females during their school years. The big boobers flirt with their teachers, the male (and some female) ones get a little excited, and then things go a little easier for them in the classroom. Suddenly that D becomes a B (the grade, not the cup size), and despite a lack of intelligence, the gal glides through school. Meanwhile, our smaller-chested friends must fight and scratch their way through, especially since the genetically-lower intelligence level of a typical female versus a typical male puts them at an immediate disadvantage. Therefore, they must study harder to achieve the grade levels required (fortunately for them, they usually have their Friday and Saturday nights available for further studies).

Okay, I gotta be fair. We all know smart chicks with nice hooters – they are definitely out there. I have a lot of well-rounded lady friends who also happen to be damn smart. But we also all know a hell of a lot of dumbass chicks with massive hogans. And last night, I think I figured out the real reason why the smart ones are more likely to have just a handful to work with.

Yep, you got it. Genetics.

I was on the Internet, doing my usual surfin' and chattin', when I ran into a gal I used to talk with a while back. We'll call her Sharon, though her real name is Francine Holland of Atlanta, Georgia (just kidding, of course). After a bit, our conversation went in the direction that all Internet chats between a guy and a gal will go: Toilet Seats. You know the old story, guy leaves it up, gal wants it down. If she was going to argue it from the standpoint that it looks much cleaner when it is down, I probably would have agreed that she had a good point but that I would still leave it up here in my own apartment. But Sharon took it in a whole new direction, of course…

"But you have never gotten up to pee in the middle of the night and fallen in, cuz some dumbass went and left the toilet seat up!"

If she thought that was going to be a convincing comment, she was in for a rude awakening. After a moment of recovery, I replied, "You know, it's funny… I have never EVER heard of a guy getting a wet arse due to not putting the seat down. Are you actually saying you would sit down for a piss before checking the seat… and then call the person who left the seat up the dumbass??"

She replied, "Yes!"

"C'mon," I said, "that is like saying a woman can't tell if a door is open or not before walking through:
Man: Hmm, there is door. Door is closed. Must open before I walk through.
Woman: Hmm, there is door. THUMP. Ouch. THUMP. Ouch. Oh, I should open it first?
That must be why God gave women breasts, so they don't break their noses!"

Taken slightly aback, Sharon said: "Okay then, what about me?" (Now mind you, I have seen a few pictures of her -- very attractive, nice person, mid-sized melons. But of course, women never seem to feel that they are large enough, so she considers herself to have no chest.)

"I guess you must be more like a man then, smart enough to open the door at least half the time!"

At this point, our conversation digressed away from our current topic, but I think you get the picture. The truth has finally come out. Stupidity in women is not a direct result of large breasts, the converse is actually true. Genetics has developed a system of protection for those less-than-genius ladies to prevent broken bones and bruises…

Gotta love effective bumpers, eh?

-- Brian.

I will venture that my exposure to gifted women at my somewhat "elite" university would easily support that intelligent women are a lot more sexy than the real dummies, but variation in boobishness seemed on a par with the general population.

Very, very true. Of course, I may be biased, as I'm lucky enough to have ended up with one of them.
