We were talking about some really nice Australian wines on the wine thread; for those "gourmets" out there may I recommend Cobram Estate (Murray Valley) early harvest, first cold pressing, extra virgin olive oil.........just dunk fresh crusty white bread into it and enjoy!
and.........if you all ready know about this pleasure.....why didn't you tell me before?

A few years ago I was in the habit of doing the fresh bread/extra virgin olive oil thing and it became a bit addictive. I had to stop because I thought that anything that tasted so good couldn't be good for me.

O am in Oz but I haven't tried the Murray Valley olive oil, I recently tried some Hunter Valley ones, and that is where I live. Very, very nice!

Helen

Thanks, Emma B. Although I'm in Oz, and only a couple of hours from the Hunter Valley, I haven't seen that one. I'll watch out for it!

One of the Hunter Valley ones was infused with lemon. Subtle, very more-ish.

I walked away from reading this thread with a serious craving for fresh bread & olive oil. I'm going to do something about now that I'm back home from work.

I suppose it's rude to mention the various lovely Mudcat ladies from Oz in the context of "yummy"...but I do enjoy the Australian wines that are being imported into the US these days.

I bought this beautiful stuff in Kangaroo Valley a few years ago. It's called Oregano Wine Vinegar, and is absolutely the best thing on salads when you want something light and tasty. I still have the bottle, which says "The Old Mountain Church Gallery - Bellawongarah". I think I'd have to go back there if I wanted more. I haven't found anything quite like it round here in Sydney :-(

Another olive oil treat is fresh bread or toast spread thickly with avocado mashed with a little olive oil, lemon juice & salt & cracked pepper if you like it. Avocado transcends itself with olive oil. It takes avocado from the mundane to the heavenly.

Helen, I just bought another little Hunter Valley "goody" - Denman Vineyard, Estate Reserve Semillon.
I might try it with the olive oil and fresh bread made with my new Breadmaker...way to go.........!

G'day JennieG,

We bought "Gwydir Grove olive oil infused with bush herbs" down the road at the Saturday morning Organic Growers' Market in the grounds of Orange Grove Public School .. some time back. Very nice it was, too!

I don't know if the same seller will stay over for the Sunday Organic Growers' Market the Addison Rd Community Centre, Marrickville ... but I'll be organising the Bush Music Club Concert Party to play some music there in the new year. We could even try a few simple dances (on the tarmac area - so they would be pretty basic) ... how's your calling going?

General Posting:

We made the "Red Heart" (Central Australia: Uluru / Kata Tjuta [Ayers Rock / Olgas] - Watarrke [Kings Canyon] - Alice Springs - Woomera - Ikara [Wilpena Pound]) trip last September - October, and brought back two very tasty sauces from Desert Pride. This is a firm, built around Mike and Gayle Quarmby, of Reedy Creek Nuseries, in South Australia, that has been developing "Bush Tucker" (the traditional outback foods collected and eaten by the Indigenous people of the region) as commercial crops and value-added products. They have 'trialled' some 65 species and are now supplying fresh "desert greens" and an assortment of sauces and preserves ... to South Australian and Northern Territory supermarkets and specialist shops. All the plants selected and bred (often clonally, from the best examples) are being supplied only to indigenous groups, who are also being given assistance in developing plantations and profitable business techniques.

The two sauces we had were a "Quandong Dessert Sauce" - based on Santalum acuminatum - "Quandong" (an important desert fruit) and "Kutjera Sauce" - a savoury sauce based on Solanum centrale - "Desert Raisin" or "Kutjera" a tangy berry with both sweet and savoury aspects. Both were very enjoyable ... and are now used up.

I'm currently trying to get a reply from the Quarmbys, or Desert Pride, to see if any Sydney outlets carry their lines ... or whether we can buy them directly.

Regards,

Bob

Oh yes please Joy.......

Bob, that bush tucker sounds yummy to me! and my calling would be OK I am sure. I bought the Gwydir Grove oil at the Gulgong butcher shop, I am hoping he still stocks it. Peel how ever many kumera you like, chop into wedges, toss in said oil and bake for 30 mins or so in mod oven. Please let me know when you are making it and I will eat with you.

Also for Sydneysiders - the Oxfam shop in Centrepoint stocks a range of Outback Spirit brand products, their lemon myrtle and chilli powder marinade is good with chook fillets. And fish.

Cheers
JennieG

Emma B,

Semillon is my favourite summer wine. It's so tangy and refreshing, I think it could be made into sorbet and eaten witha spoon.

G'day again -

JennieG: Well I staggered out into the heat and humidity of Sydney's near midsummer midday, wlaked about 1.6 km each way to Orange Grove Public School ... and bought another bottle of Gwydir Grove Australian Bush herb infused Olive Oil at the Organic Produce Markets.

If you want to look directly at their site, it's at Gwydir Olives. I paid the same as their RRP ... and their site says: "Prices are ex-Inverell", so you would be up for postage on top of that. If you don't find it around Gulgong, you'll just need to drive into Orange Grove!

GUEST (of 23 Dec 05 - 04:51 PM): Mmmmm...! Back in 1983, I drove my way downstream on the Victorian bank of the Murray River ... and smartly turned into the venerable All Saints Vineyard, at Rutherglen.

Damn the guided tours, &c ... just leave me inhaling the atmosphere of the main building ... 1½ centuries of fine fortified wines! After that spell, every other yineyard I visted smelled like a vinegar factory ... by comparison. Lots of fine port and (esp. 'liquuer'-) muscat from round there ... with, ot without, any poncey (Froggish) appellation contrôleé!

Regards,

Bob

"A Taste of Good Music"
by Paul Lawler & the Just Desserts ???!!!
