One has to wonder? I mean, Danish flags can't be all that common in local stores in the Middle East, I wouldn't think. They're not common here in Canada. Where do angry mobs of Muslim people get their Danish flags to burn?   Would it require some advance planning?   Hmmm.

Any useful theories?

The same screenprint shops that print tee-shirts. They don't have to be good flags if all yer gonna do is burn 'em. A bedsheet printed to look like a real Danish flag works just as well as the real thing.

Maybe from the embassy. I saw some of those embassy people putting their coats on pretty fast. I don't imagine they had time to stash the flags.

Ah, yes....it's easy to make up graphic items like T-shirts now, isn't it? So why not flags?

It is the first time in hundreds of years that anyone has been angry at Denmark.

"It is the first time in hundreds of years that anyone has been angry at Denmark."

LH - Wasn't there a little problem with the Danish in our Berring Sea? Granted, the Danish are usually non-controversial but that doesn't mean they are totally without fault.

Oh yes, I know everyone likes to think of them as enlightened in some way but being from a very large, maternal family of Danes, I can tell you they are not angels.

Good question. I'm not sure we have identified the answer though. The T-shirt printing software could doubtless produce the design, but where are the bedsheet-size printers and transfer sheets?

As LH says, Denmark doesn't seem to get into a lot of scraps; a bit of Viking way back, and they were with the French in the Napoleonic wars (hence the Battles of Copenhagen in 1801 + 1807) then a bit of a barney in mid 1800s over Schleswig-Holstein, neutral in WW1, same in WW2 until overrun by Germany. No angels, perhaps, but maybe we should learn something from them.

They order them off of the Flags Unlimited website L.H. You are not aware of this company. The are the largest flag manufacturere in Canada and they are located in Barrie ... have been there for years.

You can buy flags for any country of of them.

Yep, they and Bush will get along just fine. He blames Al Queda in Afghanistan for the 9/11 attack and he invades Iraq. The idiots from the Muslim sector are pissed at Denmark and they want death to the US and Israel.

Has it struck any of you that the Muslim religion has its share of idiots in it?

And why should it be any different from any other "religion"?

Organized religions seem to have very little to do with actual religion.

I've been to the Flags Unlimited store in Barrie. You can get any flag in the World there allright.

Now HERE's what Denmark and any other country that's smart should do right now. Abolish their flag! Replace it with no flag at all. Say, "Our flag shall henceforth be invisible."

This would totally disarm protestors against Denmark, because you can't burn nothing! The flag burners would be rendered totally impotent.

I think you've hit on it, Paul...

This sort of thing always happens with angry mobs. They are not appreciative of cultural subtleties and minor points like the fact that Danes and Norwegians are not identical or that all Danes are not synonymous with one or two Danes who happen to draw a political cartoon. I think Swedes may be in danger too. Possibly even Finns.

I think Little Hawk is right.   Not easy to get a Danish flag in the middle east.   I don't believe in coincide or spontaneous demonstrations.    I believe it is an organized event.   I just don't know who is coordinating it.

Can you imagine:   Muslims are threatening to behead anyone who published a cartoon depicting Muslims of beheading people.   At least they can't sue them for libel.

Subject: RE: BS: Where do you get a Danish flag in Gaza?

I think there are major players on both sides who want another war. It is therefore advantageous for them to stir up as much hatred and misunderstanding as possible between Muslims and non-Muslims, isn't it? A supply of Danish flags will therefore be readily on hand when needed, won't they?

It is so easy to provoke people. All you have to do is find out what buttons to push, and then make sure that it gets well covered in the world media.

Wasn't it because a French magazine republished them (so why didn't they burn the French Embassy? - Legion Etranger perhaps?).

Or perhaps they just couldn't get their hands on Danish flags before now.

Flags that are burned in the Middle East are usually homemade. I have seen videos of "American" flags being burned, and they are often crudely made, as if they were made by a kid out of a piece of bed sheet with a couple of felt markers. Often they don't have the right number of stars or stripes, the colors are splotchy, the lines aren't straight, and so on.

It's all over a damned cartoon!

I certainly don't condone the press in publishing it ... as it shows lack of sensitivity and respect ... but the results of which we're are witnessing certainly are a demonstration of over reacting.

For sure. But it's all so predictable, isn't it? Pavlov knows exactly how the dog will react when the bell is rung. This is how great masses of largely unaware people are manuevered into great human tragedies for the benefit of a chosen few. A provocation is found (or manufactured), a violent response is triggered, an impression is created in the minds of the public at home and abroad, battle lines are drawn, and eventually another carefully planned war is launched.

Dig this : They aren't even rioting over the cartoon depiction of Mohammed. They're rioting over somebody's concept of what a cartoon Mohammed would look like. Since representational, pictorial art has not been allowed in Muslim countries in 1700 years, my guess is nobody has the faintest clue what Mohammed looked like. Hell, when it comes to an accurate image of a historical character, Mohammed makes Jesus look like Brad Pitt.
ME: Look! See this stick figure with the smiley face?
Muslim Fundamentalist: Yes? Why?
ME: Because watch as I draw a beard and a turban. Ha! You see! It is become Mohammed!
Muslim Fundo: You clever and evil Western magical image conjuror! Stop or die!
ME: Now watch as I draw a pie hitting him in the face!
Mus Fun: Now you have desecrated the scared magical image which you just profanely created!
ME: Here. I'm sorry. Let me draw this for you...voila! a Danish Flag!
MF: I will burn it!
ME: Just take it outside if you don't mind.

Lonesome EJ - That is very funny. Made me laugh. Seriously!

I think some of you are missing the turning point.

After the twelve cartoons were commissioned and printed by the publisher, the Danish PM refused to hear the concerns of the Muslim ambassadors and wouldn't meet with them.

Does it occur to anyone that had he taken their concerns, seriously, this might not have happened? It could have been discussed, explained or even negotiated but why turn your back on them? Maybe these ambassadors knew what would happen once it became public knowlege?

I think the operative word, here, is commissioned.

Why push the river?

LH, I think I may have found the answer to your original question. Just came across this article (in Danish), which states that Danish flags are selling like hot cakes in Gaza. If you want one, the person to look up is Ahmed Abu Dayya, an entrepreneuring shop-owner, who a while back ordered 100 Danish and Norwegian flags to sell to the angry masses.

He claims that he's not taking a political stand in this, merely making an honest penny. I wonder if he's also selling molotow cocktails?
