I PMed you - one website is http://www.greekmidi.com/. Can't help with printed music except in some very specific (and probably useless to you) areas like byzantine church music. Where do you live, and what access do you have to music shops that can order such things for you?

As for CDs, for traditional Greek Music at least there is an excellent series of albums by Domna Samiou, produced in the 80's. But Amazon don't carry them - not enough demand I suppose.

There is great variety in the musical styles of different parts in Greece, as they were influenced by various neighbouring countries of hordes passing through at different points in history - are you trying to give an overall flavour of actual Greek traditional music, or simply remind the audience of their last holiday in Greece and the music they heard in the taverna? The latter would not be traditional in all likelihood, belonging to the 20th century - it's excellent music, just not traditional. To use UK parallels: are you looking for Northumbrian pipes, Morris tunes and the Copper family? Or are you looking for Steeleye Span folk-rock and 60's pop? It is very easy to pick the wrong genre for the impression you wish to give.

"Den Xanagelieme" or something very much like it (my brother wrote down "Den Xanageliemai" on the sheet music but I don't think that's right) is the name of a wonderfully twisty-tuned Greek song whose tune I learned as a child from an old 78rpm record my father had -- maybe from the 1920s.

Once he'd mastered it, my father played it (the tune, not the record) on mandola for hours on end, with the rest of us jamming along as we could on such instruments as came to hand.

I have the music in front of me, written out by my brother. I am wondering if some kidhearted Hellenic soul can supply lyrics, in Greek and/or translated, and/or a pointer to a recording with samples?

I have found one CD listing a song of that title:

http://www.musical.gr/cddetails.php?gui_language=2&CD_code=5200104352707

(clickifier not working for me this morning)

But with no audio sample, I can't be sure it's the same tune...I am reluctant to go to the risk and expense of ordering it from Greece for shipment to California without ever having heard it.

We don't speak Greek but are pretty good at learning phonetically. Brother and I would love to learn this song! Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!
Claire

There are Greek lyrics to this song posted under this YouTube (click :show more"), but when I copy them here and preview them, the characters mutate into accented vowels.

Here is an odd Google translation of what's posted there:

not xanageliemai
Lyrics - Music: G. Papaioannou

I walk and PARAMILO for this my plight.
We separated and I find the lurking my joy.

For love anymore I will stop now tyranny.
Once xanageliemai not fooled.

In forgot, in my mind anymore I do not put in.
Do not cry, and laments, and not change my opinion.

Anyone out there who can help make this close enough to meaningful English that I can figure out how to revise it into something intelligible?

(Also, I can't get the title translated, so could use help with that.) Thank you!

Watcha, Claire! Here you go:

"I won't be fooled again"

I walk, talking to myself about this plight of mine
We separated and, poor me, I have found my happiness again!

I will stop torturing myself for love
I was fooled once, won't be fooled again.

I 've forgotten about you, you no longer enter my thoughts
Don't cry and beat yourself up, I am not changing my mind.

George, I was hoping you'd stop by. Thank you very, very much!

Now it will be possible, in fact a fun project, to re-interpret the song in English, and my brother will be especially delighted if I succeed. He loves the song as much as I do and can play the tune; I, on the other hand, grow extra thumbs whenever I try.

Thanks again,
Claire
