Subject: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: GUEST,Heather Date: 05 Mar 06 - 03:10 AM Anyone know where the nearest folk club would be to Crossgates? Just wondered if there was one close i was missing, as I seem to have to travel at least 10 miles if i want to go to any club. There seem to be lots North and South of Leeds but none in the villages to the East. Thanks |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 05 Mar 06 - 03:28 AM The Grove (Fridays) is central, not far at all from Crossgates - if you want a good singing/guest club. There are tune sessions in Headingley/Hyde Park Sun and Wed, again not far. Many towns have no clubs for scores of miles! |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 05 Mar 06 - 10:25 AM Chapel Haddlesy? 30 years in Leeds and never heard of it. Where's it near? You couldn't be thinking of Chapel Allerton could you? Been some occasional folk gigs at the Queens, (and at the Highwood now, they tell me) - but no club. |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: Tig Date: 05 Mar 06 - 10:43 AM Way back in the dim and distant past (more years ago than I care to remember) when I lived in Whitkirk we always had to travel to town to go to folk club - hence my formative years in folk were spent at such places as The Grove and The Regent. I well remember being walked back to City Square for my bus home by the likes of Roger Sutcliffe, Tom Napper etc. My dad still lives there and I am certain he would have let me know if there was a nearer club I could go to when visiting him. Chapel Haddersley is part way between Doncaster and Selby as is used by the 'rolling' folk session on a Wednesday night which also happens at the Black Dog, Camblesford and The Jimmy Hurst. If you find any nearer let me know. |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: GUEST,bobcat Date: 06 Mar 06 - 08:25 AM Hi Heather. Also a sing around at the Abbey inn, Newlay Leeds...not far from Kirkstall on Tuesdays... BUT< why don't you find a sympathetic landlord and set up a venue in East Leeds.Go for Tuesday or Thursday evening, put flyers you have run off on your computer into the Grove ,and Hobgoblin, notices in the free weekly news and 'in what's on' in the YEPOST and let us know on mudcat and I'll pass the word on to singers and musicians....not places in Leeds on those nights? You don't have to go for Guest nights to start off..see what people want.People in Yorkshire like to make music..participate. We travel some distance ourselves for superb participation nights |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: Mrs.Duck Date: 06 Mar 06 - 11:41 AM Actually the pub in Chapel Haddlesey, The Jug hasn't been used for sessions for a few years now. The George and Dragon in West Haddlesey has a session once a fortnight with the other Wednesday being at the Jemmy Hurst in Rawcliffe. The Black Dog in Camblesforth is the home of the Yorkshire Gathering in May but no longer hosts sessions. |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 06 Mar 06 - 12:58 PM Thanks Bobcat, for mentioning our session at the Abbey at Newlay (Have you been?). We meet at 9ish and sing on until closing time. The music varies from sea shanties to rock n roll and jazz. We have some excellent regulars while others like myself are strictly amateurs. We all get the same warm welcome and a real community spirit is fostered. Heather, if you'd like to come. have a look in Tykes' News for my phone number and give me a ring for directions. Bobcat's advice is sound though. Find a sympathetic pub, ask what their quietest night is and build your own event! Cheers Wayne |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: GUEST,wayne Date: 06 Mar 06 - 06:28 PM Cor! News travels fast! We are, indeed, having a charity weekend at the Abbey. It'll be on the 7th and 8th of July in aid of St. George's Crypt, an excellent centre for homeless people in Leeds. There's no entry fee but we will be passing a collection bucket around and have a "prize every time" tombola. Our guests on Friday are Tim Moon, Paul Pearson, Westport, Silverwheel and Duncan Mcfarlane's acoustic band. On Saturday we have Tim Light, Peter Taylor, John Waller, Keeper's Fold, Susie Fox & John Firminger, Rae Bailey, Achord, Tim Moon (again) Ian Hill, Whitney Gin and Julie Ellison, with one or two more to be confirmed. All of the above are giving their time and talent free of charge, which is amazing. Thanks to all concerned. I am very, very grateful. The main concerts will be outside (kneecap that rainmaker, now!)with open house in the pub for music and song sessions. It should be a fine occasion. Thanks again, Bobcat, for mentioning it. Cheers Wayne |

Subject: RE: No folk clubs in East Leeds From: Tyke Date: 08 Mar 06 - 07:35 AM Scholes, Barwick, and Thorner have all been past venues for Folk Clubs. Not been over that way for some years now. But the Club seemed to do quite well although the club in the end did move to Thorner. I can't remember the reasons for the moves but the Club seemed to be best place in Scholes. In a Pub restaurant again whose name I can't remember but it had an Old Railway Carriage as part of the Restaurant. The Folk Clubs, closure I believe, came about when Brian the organizer moved away to North Yorkshire. The last I saw of him was when he was running a Folk Night at the Saltersgate about once a month. I lost track of Brian after that when it closed due to a change of management of the Saltersgate. Things change, as do Licensees and the in case of the Saltersgate the Folk Friendly Landlord moved back about five years ago. So perhaps the same thing has happened around East Leeds. I don't hold up much hope for one in Crossgates however as most Pub's are likely to be a bit rowdy to say the least. |
