MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A congresswoman's son and three Democratic campaign workers were sentenced Wednesday to four to six months in jail for slashing tires outside a Bush-Cheney campaign office on Election Day 2004.

The men pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor property damage. A fifth worker was found not guilty.

"This case had to be a public example of what can happen when you interfere with voters' rights," said Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Michael Brennan, who rejected prosecutors' recommendation of probation for the four men.

The state Republican Party had rented more than 100 vehicles to give rides to voters and poll monitors on November 2, 2004. The cars were parked outside a GOP campaign office when the tires were punctured. The vandalism left the drivers scrambling for new vehicles.

Among those sentenced Wednesday were Sowande A. Omokunde, the son of Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, and Michael Pratt, the son of former acting Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt.

"I love my son very much. I'm very proud of him," Moore said. "He's accepted responsibility."

Omokunde was sentenced to four months in jail; Pratt and Lewis Caldwell of Milwaukee were sentenced to six months; and Lavelle Mohammad of Milwaukee was sentenced to five months. All were granted work-release privileges.

Brennan also ordered them to pay a $1,000 fine each, in addition to the $5,317 in total restitution ordered earlier.

The four could have faced up to nine months in jail term and fines of $10,000.

Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes in the 2004 election ended up going to Democrat John Kerry.

Nothing to do with Democratic elections and everything to do with smart-ass kids committing acts of vandalism.

well, they should get what they deserve for being stupid and destructive in the name of politics....but a special thread to 'document' one instance just to 'prove' that Democrats are not perfect? We knew that....we know Republicans aren't either.

Same pattern, Bruce...isolated examples of Democrats doing something naughty or awkward...as if that showed something.

Teresa Heinz Kerry really DID use a naughty word...stipulated.

Also, with the exception of the exact sentence imposed, very OLD news, more than adequately dealt with on previous threads.

Sorry, if I have to read to endless tirades about how Diebold 'rigged" the Ohio elections, even thought their machines were only used in 2 of the 60 some counties, then you can read ( or choose not to) about how the only convicted election tampering was by Dems.

"endless tirades"?? spare me...I never saw even one. The Diebold matter is one that needs careful examination. No one has proven that Diebold OR operators has rigged ANY election...but the flaws in a system built by a politically leaning company does need scrutiny.

Come on, Bruce... Let's get real here... Yeah, some Dems just wish they could be as corrupt as the Repubs but guess what???

Takes power to be corrupt and the Dems are outta power... Might of fact, the Dems are jus' plain standin' on the side of the road completely outta gas...

But if it makes you happy to try to divert attention to the complete corruption of the Republican Party by snipin' at the Dems, hey, go for it... They are a bunch of losers, too...

Vote Green...

While I have tended to vote for Democratic candidates I have not felt compelled to excuse outrageous behaviour or political action or search for some example of illegal action by Republicans to justify the action of Democrats. That is what makes it so hard for me to understand the currant political climate when people who elect an official are so willing to accept the word of that official even though his actions almost always favor a very wealthy minority.

A few kids slashing tires can hardly be compared to the magnitude of the corruption to be found in Republican Party campaign funding, not to mention all the palm-greasing that keeps the Repubs going.

Ever heard of a guy named Abramoff?

Then we have the RNC paying millions of dollars defending an actual top Republican official, James Tobin, in New Hampshah, and the White House won't say who it was that he was talking to numerous times at the White House in the run-up to the illegal shenanigans there. Hardly the same as a bunch of kids and a stoopid, illegal prank (unless you're of the opinion that the White House and Republican party are infested with pre0adolescents), no?

Cheers,

As Arne noted, we had a NH Replublican who hit upon the scheme to get several friends to keep calling on a phone line that the Democrats had set up for disabled people to call in on, to get a ride to the polls, to block their access to the polls. Fortunately his trick was discovered, he was prosecuted and convicted.

Time DOES would all heels.

Well, my Republican Congressman (Doolittle) pays his wife 15 percent of all his campaign contributions as a "fundraising fee." That, and he wants to biild a dam and flood my favorite hiking spot.

Ummm, it was the head of the NH Republican Party and Dubya's campaign chair up there, and it wasn't just him and "several friends". They hired a telemarketing firm to do the job.....

And as pointed out in the second link, the RNC paid $2.5 million to defend their guy in court. Now that's quite a new take on the idea of "taking responsibility"....

Cheers,
