Subject: Madeleine Payroux fans? From: Gurney Date: 02 Jun 06 - 03:15 AM I've asked my wife for her third CD as a birthday present. I found her second, Dreamland, in a bargain bin, and it has become a favourite, but I wondered if the other two have a similar mixture of tracks, i.e. jazz/blues, or whatever category you assign them. Does anyone know? Thanks. I wonder how that CD got from NY to NZ. |

Subject: RE: Madeleine Payroux fans? From: redsnapper Date: 02 Jun 06 - 04:31 AM Yes Gurney, I'm a BIG fan of Madeleine Peyroux, especially her more "swing jazz" arrangements. I recently got her CD "Careless Love" (I think it's the most recent) and it's a corker! It's a mix of jazz, swing and blues but it typical Peyroux style. In a similar vein, you might also like the Susie Arioli Swing Band (from Montreal). Best regards, RS |

Subject: RE: Madeleine Payroux fans? From: GUEST Date: 02 Jun 06 - 07:32 AM I'm a fan too, although I haven't heard much of her. From what I understand she seems to have a healthy disregard for the industry and is prone to going missing whenever she seems to be on the brink of stardom. Good for her! |
Subject: RE: Madeleine Payroux fans? From: Ernest Date: 02 Jun 06 - 10:47 AM Heard one of her cd`s once and liked the mix of styles. And I second redsnappers recommendation of Suzie Arioli Band - very good! Regards Ernest |
Subject: RE: Madeleine Payroux fans? From: Bat Goddess Date: 02 Jun 06 - 03:53 PM I caught her by accident years ago on public radio (probably "All Things Considered" in the car on my way home from work. Tried to remember her name/pertinent info, etc. until Friday when I ws in my local record shop. And someone else was already there trying to explain to the proprietor what he was looking for. We pooled our information (I had at least remembered her name) and he was able to get her first CD (that's how long ago this was) for us. Sorry to say, I've neglected getting her next CD -- but it's high on my get around to it list! I really enjoy everything of hers that I've heard, even if I do tend to buy trad when I'm spending my CD allowance. Linn |

Subject: RE: Madeleine Payroux fans? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 02 Jun 06 - 07:05 PM Yes, I totally enjoy Madeleine Peyroux. However, I only know of two. Dreamland and Careless Love. What's the title of the third one, and what label is it on? |

Subject: RE: Madeleine Peyroux fans? From: Gurney Date: 03 Jun 06 - 09:49 PM Thanks, folks. George, I've ordered 'Careless Love' and 'Got You on my Mind' through amazon.com. As I said at the top, I already had 'Dreamland.' Now to investigate Susie Arioli. Linn, there was a time when I too only bought and sang trad, but although I still like it, I've become much more catholic and cosmopolitan in my tastes over the last 40 years..... good grief! Is it really 40 years? And I was into jazz before I discovered folk anyway. Don't go to jazz clubs since they (politely) applaud breaks, a habit that gets up my nose. |
Subject: RE: Madeleine Peyroux fans? From: shepherdlass Date: 04 Jun 06 - 06:56 AM She is fabulous - it's like Lady Day's come back to life. Gurney - does applauding solos bother you that much? It's just a way of showing appreciation for a wonderful bit of improvisation and it's not usually "politeness" but genuine involvement. Surely we can't really complain about others being intolerant of the quirks related to folk performance if we're intolerant of the quirks of other genres? |
