Subject: BS: HP Sauce - Folk Icon?
From: Doktor Doktor

I'm distraught at the decision to outsauce production to Belgium ... there's even a web petition going round as it's seen by some as an affront to British Tradition. (it's all them damn colonial yanks, who own Heinz)
I have an uneasy feeling that this raises some real serious issues about how America is seen in the world

- Is this another case of Misguided US Imperialism?

- Why do the American Establishnment persist in stepping on other folks' National Icons, fail to realise they've done it, and then act all outraged when foreigners tread on theirs?

- why are there no songs about HP sauce?

- if it goes abroad, who's going to write a chorus or two about How Good the Old Sauce was?

Time for a debate!
Come on Mudcat, what do the master-debaters here think?

"Why do the American Establishnment persist in stepping on other folks' National Icons, fail to realise they've done it, and then act all outraged when foreigners tread on theirs?"

'Cause we're Americans ferchrissakes. What we ain't got we buy and what we don't use we throw away and we got the money and power to do it so just suck on our SUV tailpipes. You doofus Brit types have traditions but the damn things are all real old. Shitfire Bub, what good are those? They're all worn out! Get yourselves some new ones like us. We have traditions that matter.....like having 14 guns in every household and if you fuck with that one, it could cost ya'!!

HP Sauce? Who gives a flying fart about that crap? Get some A1 and be happy. You need something a lot less bland than HP. It ain't no wonder y'all like it I suppose since your "traditional" foods have the distinction of being bland as hell and yet capable of producing monstrous amounts of flatulence. You need some new tradition like ours......Pizza, Nachos, General Tso's Chicken, Phad Thai, Sushi, Samosas, Moussaka.......a few still eat hot dogs here but that tradition went down the tubes in favor of Bratwurst.

Yeah, you talk about American, that's a tradition.....Brats on a hoagie roll with onions and Swiss cheese and a Budweiser. Y'all ain't got no beer like that do you? Damn right ya' don't!!!

For the record - IMHO US Budweiser* is a pale and ersatz reflection of the original Budvar (also available here but denied to our American Cousins and rightly so)

*Budweiser(TM) is of course a Fine Beverage and nothing in the above obviously frivolous statement should be taken as anything other than gentle and affectionate satire, directed for sport and amusement towards our American Friends (of all ages, genders, ethicity and proclivity without favour and with Unconditional Positive Regard)for whom we have the Highest Regard. The author recognises freely and without duress that Budweiser(TM)is Entirely Suitable for responsible and moderate consumption by folkies of all kinds except those prohibeted by age or othwise from consuming alcoholic beverages by reason of age or other local ordinance.

This post has nothing whatever to do with any apprehension concerning US litgation or American Lawyers who are the Finest in the World.

God Bless America

And Grain Belt?

But this business about HP sauce. So, Heinz owns it and moves it to Belguim. Just goes to show.

Theresa Heinz KERRY owns Heinz! Her hubby is JOHN KERRY, late candidate for PRESIDENT OF THE US of A!! Isn't it obvious? Isn't it clear? Kerry loses the election, Heinz moves the production of HP Sauce to Belgium! Do I have to explain it all to you? Do I have to point out that it's just another case of LIBERALS talking out of both sides of their mouth? That it's just another move to GLOBALIZE the world economy and foist upon the unsuspecting the New World Order?

Oh yes! When Flemish parachutists land in West Riding and the landing barges of the Belgian Army crash ashore at Holyhead and discharge their battalions of kill-crazy maniacs, then you'll wish that you'd made A Stand and kept HP Sauce in Britain by supporting George W. Bush.

But it will be too late.

A rose by any other word ...

There used to be an HP sauce song in the 70s, to the tune of Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime"

"HP sauce is the great British sauce
HP sauce is delicious of course ..."

art, in the US you're probably more familiar with it as A1 sauce, although in many places it's sold as HP (Houses of Parliament).

HP and A1 don't taste the same Pinky although they are both brown. For my money, both stink.....I like Crosse&Blackweel myself, but it is a pain to find it. My favorite grocery store carried it but since they closed I have to go to Columbus......***sigh***...........

HP SAUCE RULES!!

I grew up on the damn stuff! I could drink it straight from the bottle!

Cette sauce de haut qualité est un melange de fruits orienteaux, d'epices, etc.. etc.

(I used to have the whole dang label memorized til I strated trying A-1, and now it's lost!)

Now Rapaire, be nice. Remember, Kerry was in the Navy...the Navy is part of the Marine Corps (or something like that)...and Marines put ketchup on brats! Clearly, Kerrys have no sense of style as far as food is concerned.

Okay Art. You talked me into it. I can't help it that the Navy is part of the Marines, and neither can the Marines. My oldest nephew was a Marine, and his brother is going into the Corps in September. Neither of them put ketchup on brats. Brats are steamed in beer and served on steamed buns. GOOD catsup (not necessarily made from tomatoes, either) might be offered as an accompaniment, along with finely diced sweet onion, GOOD mustard, and other condiments. The brats, of course, should be gently lifted from their steam bath on the tip of a Ka-Bar, and inserted into the steamed bun. Unless, of course, your wife objects to that!

I guess it was a long time back Amos since its a Brit tradition and Seamus grew up on it. The taste is exactly the same as the smell you get when lightning zaps your hard drive.

Crosse and Blackwell Steak Sauce puts them all to shame!!!

Crosse and Blackwell, Chef, Daddies, A-1, and all other brown sauces are for suckling babies.
HP is a full-grown adult sauce, and I'll brook no argument on this.

I hope Alison reads this thread and chimes in. Remember HP Sauce sandwiches?

Bread and butter with nothing but HP between the slices. Yum!

I can see why you'll "brook" no argument on this......A brook suggests something lovely and beautiful, a babbling little stream......... whereas HP leaves you more like up Shit Creek.   HP is so bland I heard they are getting James Taylor to do their promos!

Spaw, HP can even make possum roadkill taste good, unlike your sissy-ass Crosse and Blackwell.
Come to think of it, I'm gonna go out and see if I can run one over right now.

He'd taste even better if he were called Clay, or Cleigh or something like that.....

Don Firth - ketchup? Oh, you must mean "red sauce."

What's the matter, Don? Afraid to try a little brown...?

No, wait! Forget I said that!

Didn't Dylan do an album about HP on bread called "Bland on Bland?"

Yeah......I can see how it might be great on bread. I mean like why ruin a fine piece of meat with HP sauce? Put some Marmite on there too so you can kill off the HP aftertaste.

Cleigh is deeply offended and has gone off to his favorite shelf in a huff. I think it was a 4 door Huff. Anyway he's plotting things against you Seamus...................

Kickass Habanero Sauce. Scorned Woman. Any of these. Give up those wimpy, pansy-assed HPs, A-1s, ketchups, and Heinz 57s and get yourselves a man's man sauce (even if you're a lady). If it don't leave tongue blisters it ain't SAUCE!!*

*Mind you, I don't use these. I like my food interesting, but nontoxic.

Rap, as a user of assorted hot sauces I will guarantee the absolute hottest without peer is mage by Dave's.....It is stupendously and gigantically hotter that their already mind numbing "Dave's Insanity Sauce."

ENDORPHIN RUSH is simply too hot to describe. There are many hot sauces that I have occasionally "pranked" a friend with but I would never do it with Endorphin Rush. The burn is no laughing matter and I am well tuned in to hot sauces!

Heinz bought the product from the French company Danone in April this year after a delay caused by a reference to the Competition Commission.

Needless to say, the CC and the OFT decided that an American corporation was a more suitable repository for a great British tradition that the perfidious French. Bush squared Bliar on this, no doubt. Now Heinz want to move production to the Netherlands.
