If you are not a believer in the Otherworld, stop now, OK?

We have just bought a used (gently used!) 5th wheel camper from Mr's mom. Last night I was sitting in it alone, with only candle light. Most of you know that we lost our beloved Corgis, Gilley and Annie last Feb and March.

Annie came back to me about a week after she died just to say she was OK. Gilley came to my best friend Judith to say the same thing. (He has been adopted by a herd of deer)

All of a sudden my lap was full of Gilley and Annie...I could feel their weight and fur. Annie told me they wanted to come camping just one more time, check out their new little brother and sisters' new summer house, make sure 'their' tent was still there, but

The Mother Dog said that they couldn't stay long and this is the last time they may visit like that. They must go to sleep now and wait for us. Let us heal and focus our energy on the new babies. They were both crying human tears...and so was I. Howling even after they left. Am still leaking every time I tell this. Just need to tell daughter, then am not telling it again.

Bente in Denmark was in the chat room with me and I was telling her...she said, Sorch, as I was reading your words the song, 'Together Forever' came on the CD player........

Just very very strange and moving. And, I don't care if you believe or not. I KNOW what I saw and felt.

If there ain't dogs in heaven I don't want to go there.

Having just finished with my FIL's funeral (the burial is in mid-August) I agree with Bobert. HE wasn't there in body, anyway. Like the old epitath says, "Only the hull lies here. The nut has gone elsewhere."

In a deeply moving NYPD Blue episode, Sipowicz is sitting with someone who has just lost (or is about to lose) a dear love. Sipowicz recounts his own "visitations" from his late son, and explains that it will happen when the time is right. And when it does, he assures the man, it will seem like it's real. And you don't question it, it is a help, and it's a comfort.

The point is-- just don't question it. If it brings healing, then whether it's something we do with our minds or it really comes from beyond, who care-- if it brings healing, let it come and let it work its healing.

And I'm happy for ANY healing you get, for this or for anything else.

~Susan

The interesting thing is, some spirits come back to "visit" and some don't...both animals and humans. My father's brother appeared to him about a month after the brother's death...and they could never STAND each other! The brother had only one thing on his mind: he wanted to know if his money was going to his children (my father being executor of the will). They didn't like each other any better after my uncle's passing than before!

This uncle of mine apparently was not changed much at all by his sojourn in the hereafter...at least not if my father's version of the incident was accurate. He was just as crabby and demanding as before.

And by the way, my father has never believed in stuff like that...and he showed no inclination for or interest in stuff like that after that incident either! This physical existence remained his sole area of interest. But he did report the apparition to me and my mother the day after it had occurred.

As I was just told by a friend, the Great Spirit takes care of all spirits, including mine. I will be OK one of these years. Puppies will help a lot.

I believe you too, Sorcha. Thank you for finding the courage to tell us about your beautiful experience. I've heard that all dogs go to heaven, and I believe that too. There are not many creatures more loving, more loyal, more self-sacrificing than a dog.

I wasn't sure if animals have a soul, until a just few months ago, when a friends puppy died suddenly in violent and very tragic circumstances. I won't go into detail here, but just know that I had an unforgettable experience with it's ghost. And it did stop suffering and "go into the Light" too, with a little help from a couple tuned-in human 'friends'.

I've heard one must be free of any negative emotional state before you can 'go into the Light" - the energy of suffering, anger, obsessive grief, negative attachments of any kind can hold one back. SOunds to me like your beloved departed companions are there already -- and you must be as well, since you could 'tune into' them so readily and feel their love.

I will be OK one of these years.

You are very 'OK' right now, Sorcha, imo. Just know it!

Love and blessings,

daylia

Actually, just to get it right, what I was listening to was:

"Bless all the souls who left us this year
you may be gone but you'll always be here."

From the track "Christmas in N.Y." found on the Shilelagh Law CD "Together in the End".

Best wishes,

I can't disbelieve, but I have no personal experience in that direction. But there is a lot of anecdotal evidence, including in my own family. Besides, we'll all know soon enough.

"A wise man is never sure of anything."

Anyone who is interested in this sort of thing, or not, find a copy of the Tibeten Book of the Dead.

I've never had this experience with an animal, but I have with a human. My old friend, Marshall Dodge came to me in a dream two weeks after he was killed by a drunk driver. In life, he was very unhappy. I believe he was bi-polar, anyway, he told me not to grieve because he had found the peace that eluded him in life. I still miss him after 25 years, but I don't grieve. How could I?

He also appeared to two other mutual friends around the same time with a similar message.
At the time, I had never heard of the Tibeten book of the dead, but according to it a soul hangs around after death for up to two weeks before moving on.

You keep your lofty abstract god,
Myself, I choose a child of Pan,
An ordinary yellow dog
Who does for love what mortals can,
Who stretches out her mortal frame
Determinedly, although she's lame
For one more walk beside her man.

Whose ashes grace the forest way
We roamed together yesterday.
And, to the wilder god I pray:
Give her soul some woods to run,
A stick to fetch, a patch of sun.
And near her, Pan, preserve a place
For me, come from a lesser race.

I am glad you've had a *visit*, Sorchadarlin'...it does help, eventually. My first beloved Siamese female, Sasheen, came back to me shortly after she had passed on. I very distinctly felt the weight of her jump onto my bed and snuggle up on my pillow as she had done every night; felt her raspy tongue as she gave my forehead a few kisses. I stroked her and stroked her and crying, quietly whispered over and over, "Thank you, thank you. Oh, I love and miss you so!"

Have also felt my mom around a few times when there was great concern about my brother. Finally had to tell her he was not my responsibility; he'd have to fend for himself!:-)

Puppies are something, aren't they? Rue now has TWO boxers about 12 weeks old. What a pair!

My dad used to smile and laugh - but the only time he looked truly happy, from within, was in a dream shortly after he died. I'd been feeling some guilt - I'm the older child and I hadn't known his heart was failing (never mind that he didn't have any symptoms beyond the general aches and pains he'd muttered about for years), so hadn't tried to drag him to a doctor. But after the dream, I just sort of knew that the universe was as it should be, and it was OK.

Our big tomcat Gashay didn't come back the way your Corgis did, but he was never much of a lap cat. However, he showed up in a dream, companionably hanging about with the tomcat I'd lost forty-some years earlier and hadn't really thought of in years until Gashay wandered in our lives as a neighborhood stray and I noticed he had the same big brown nose as my very favorite childhood cat.

Thanks for posting this, Sorcha. I always like to know how a story ends.

Hugs,
JudyB

My Fred stayed with me for about two years after his passing. Big, nasty Tom Cat who was banned from three different veterinary clinics. But he and I took care of each other.

I am glad you had a similar experience, Sorcha. It doesn't matter who believes or not.

I'm so glad you got to share one more moment with your wonderful little friends. My calico cat passed a few months ago and while she was never a lap cat I have seen her out of the corner of my eye jumping up on the bed or whatever when I'm in the other room. I know it's not just me, because my other cat sees her, too and will look at me to make sure he's not the crazy one.
My great aunt stops in to say hello every so often as well, but in a different way. I work for a real estate attorney and I was picking through an old deed of property and lo and behold, she had sold said property in 1940 to the prior owners. I have also spoken to a client on the phone who, if I didn't know better, I'd have sworn was her. She died when I was 17 but we were always very close so I take these things as her way of checking in on me.

My cat (one before my present one) came back to me the first night that she passed. Again, it was just to let me know she was fine and not to be upset. I found it helped so much.

Sending my best and so glad you shared what happened,

Yesterday morning, while rushing around to go to work, I found a piece of paper scrunched up on the sofa in my spare room, i.e. music/junk/sewing room. I could see music notation on it. I uncrumpled it and found 3 tunes on it, the top one being South Wind.

This is a strange "coincidence" (if you believe that that is all it is) in relation to this thread because an old friend passed over a few days ago and I only found out about it the night before I found this piece of paper. He was the first person I heard playing and *singing* South Wind, and he made my Celtic lever harp for me, the first of only three harps he made, because he made guitars and lap dulcimers before that.

I knew when I saw the music notation that it would be South Wind, because I was expecting a message from him.

Hi Sorcha I've found this thread very interesting and want to share a special experience with you.

I have a cat called Tigger, a ginger tom who is a very loving, nay amorous, cat. Many times I have returned from the pub and snuggled up to Tig on the couch only to fall into a deep deep sleep as a result of his deeply hypnotic purring.
It's like a form of meditation to me and it sends me into a deeply restful oblivion.

I have always thought that Tigger was a very special cat and have always welcomed him into our family.
Some time ago I had a severe depressive illness which meant some time in hospital ( I won't go into details ) but on my return home Tigger was ever so protective of me. He would wait for me in the hall when I went outside for a cigarette and he would now sleep by my head in bed at night purring away.

It was as though he could sense my emotions and my depression and was determined to be close to me, which he had'nt done before.

The same night I came home from the hospital I had visions, with eyes wide open in the darkness of my bedroom, of cats softly falling from the ceiling onto my bed. At the time Tigger was snuggled up by my head.
I could feel them landing upon my bed very very softly and prowling and moving about to get comfortable. They settled by my sides and between my legs and by my head and I could feel their heat. I could also feel them 'podding' their paws to make their resting place more comfortable.

If felt as though Tigger had summoned their spirits to help to heal me.
This continued for about two weeks, after which I really did feel much better.

I know this sounds bizzare but I now do believe in spiritual healing and the power and presence that pets have in our lives.

If you express your love to pets in this life they will reciprocate by expressing their love in this life or the next. It's a very special relationship that mankind has enjoyed and perhaps understood far more than we do today, for thousands of years.

Who knows !

While sitting having a drink with friends outside the Ship Hotel in Padstow one evening, I looked up to see my dad smiling back from a table on the other side of the courtyard. He was sat with a group of 8 or 9 similar aged men and women. When my husband asked who I was smiling at I said dad. The freeky thing is dad had been dead for 2 years and as my husband pointed out of the dozen or so tables ours was the only one occupied - there was no one else outside. I often wonder who the people were with my dad ???

Hi Sorcha

I'm glad your pets came to say goodbye. In this thread, Departed pets , I told about my lovely cat Dellie who died last year.

A few months ago, our other cat, Baxter, died. He was a cranky old grey and white moggie who we loved, he had been staggering around on three legs for the last 15 years and ran our household. My ex, Don, lives next door and had been minding Baxter during the week while i've been working interstate. We knew the time was coming, he rang me and said Baxter was on the way out, and that he felt the right thing to do was to have him put down. I asked him to just wait 3 days til the weekend when i could get home, so I could say goodbye, because I never got a chance to say goodbye to Dellie.

Don explained that Baxter was in too much pain, and I realised it had to be done. That evening, Baxter was put down, and strangely, that evening, I had a dream that Dellie came to say goodbye. She came and "visited" me, climbing on my shoulder and just being with me for a moment, before she left.

That was a dream, but I don't doubt that your experience was real, Sorcha, because I have had a similar visitation from a close friend, a few hours after she died.

x freda

Helen wrote, I knew when I saw the music notation that it would be South Wind, because I was expecting a message from him.

My younger sister died in 1981 of heart failure. I flew to Austin to be with my mother, who nursed Jan until she died. That first evening I sat, looking around Jan's apartment and thinking how bleak it was without her.

This is the first and only time this has ever happened to me: I felt Jan's presence in the room. I thought "Oh, now I understand what that means." I heard her say, "I ought to kick your butt. You of all people ought to know I'm not gone. I'm fine! God's love is here and it's wonderful." [I was a bit surprised, because I hadn't thought of Jan as being at all religious.] "Here, this is what it feels like." I felt/saw what looked like outer space, filled with stars, and a Milky Way of golden sparkles. Then those golden sparkles started to fill me, starting at my feet and filling me right up to my head, taking away my grief entirely and leaving a feeling of peace and rightness.

I told my mom about the experience but reserved judgment on what it "meant," but I knew that no matter where it came from, it had been vastly healing.

Next morning Jan's best friend came over. She said, "Jan visited me last night. She said, Lynn, stop crying. Stop crying! Being here is wonderful. Jesus' love is wonderful." Both "visits" happened at roughly the same time of evening.

Jan's presence seemed to touch other people after her death. (I'm not surprised -- she was one of the most determined, stubborn, self directed people I've ever known. Rules to her were for other people. :-)

We held a service here 3 weeks later. My mother asked for Whispering Hope saying it was a favorite of Jan's. Next morning I had a sudden urge to turn on Stained Glass Bluegrass. I thought, "Well, in a few minutes." Then my mind said, "Do it NOW, or I'll miss a message from Jan." So I turned it on; they were just playing the first bars of Whispering Hope.

I've been aware, at different times, of each of my parents making visits. And a deceased friend, who died by his own hand, paid several visits, some of them rather creepy, as his friends tried to sort through the details of his life that led to that act. He's much calmer now, and doesn't come by often.

It's not the same as if they were still here with us, but it is something.

Now, as my children mature, there have been so many times that I've wanted to call Mom or Dad to tell them some neat thing about one of the kids. I'm sure that serves as a sort of call, that desire to talk. It has led to dreams or glimpses of those conversations.

Your experience of the song on the radio is one I have had, too. Musical messages are part of the way I know that the "dear departed" are talking to me. (By the way, we sang Whispering Hope at Mum's funeral, too.)

When my Grandma was just about to go I was driving back home, thinking that that would be the last time I saw her, although I saw her again the next day just before she went. I had an urge to change the channel on the radio and just as I did the song by The Pretenders, Hymn to Her came on. I had listened to that song before but never as carefully as that day.

Let me inside you
Into your room
Ive heard its lined
With the things you dont show
Lay me beside you
Down on the floor
Ive been your lover
From the womb to the tomb
I dress as your daughter
When the moon becomes round
You be my mother
When everythings gone

....

Keep beckoning to me
From behind that closed door
The maid and the mother
And the crone thats grown old

It was the message from the old religion: the maid, the mother and the crone. All of the stages of womanhood and Mother Nature, and the cycles of life.

And she will always carry on
Something is lost
But something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Some things change
Some stay the same

Now, when I hear that song I think of my Grandma, but also all of those bigger, universal messages.

But the radio message from my Mum, which I again heard by being compelled to switch radio stations as I was driving up to her place, after having been told that she had passed away suddenly, was Eric Clapton's Tears from Heaven, the song he wrote about the loss of his son. That wasn't the amazing bit, though.   A couple of months later, on my birthday, I was having a terrible, terrible day. She always used to phone me in the morning on my birthday and this was the first time ever that she wasn't going to do that. I had a very busy day, teaching at one campus, driving without a meal break to the next, then driving again to the next without a break.

At the last class of the day I decided to take them, a motley group of mostly boisterous young men doing a pre-apprenticeship course in horticulture, up to the computer room because I wasn't holding it together very well that day. So I told them to pack up and move to the other room.

One fairly quiet young man was still packing up after all the others had left the room and I waited until he was ready. As he picked up his belongings, and without looking at me, he started to sing Tears in Heaven. Just one verse, and then he went out of the room.
I don't know whether it was a coincidence or whether he was psychic, and if so, if he knew he was psychic, or if the song just popped into his head and he just followed his instincts that day. The way he seemed to be slow in packing up his belongings seemed deliberate to me or maybe he was just "being told" and he couldn't resist the urge. I don't know. But I know that my Mother was giving me a message on my birthday.

I am so grateful to that young man for giving in to his instincts and singing that song. I never heard him singing before or after that day, either. Logically, if he saw how distressed I was in the classroom he could have deducted that I was in a grieving state and Tears in Heaven is a logical choice to sing, but there are plenty of other possible choices too, so I prefer to believe that it was a specific message.

Generally, I will often get a quick visit soon after someone's passing, and then, 3-6 months later, after they have recovered their normal healthy self I will often get a visit again which is a bit more of a chat.   to tell me how they are getting on. Often this will be in a dream, but sometimes it is a presence with messages. My Aunt was a week late for her funeral. She had had a stroke so it took her a week to realise she had gone. I dreamt about her funeral the following week, on the same day of the week as her funeral, and she was standing in the church looking at everyone and realising that she had gone. I

My Grandma, on the other hand, was standing on the dais at her funeral, with one hand on her coffin, looking intently at everyone's faces, alternating between looking bemused at how much love we were sending her (she didn't seem to realise how strong a presence she is to everyone in our family) and looking at everyone as if she wanted to imprint our faces on her memory for the last time so that she could hold us in her heart when she left.

This stuff really is amazing, and I don't CARE who believes or doesn't. Those of us it has happened to just KNOW right?

You know, Sorcha, this is just one woman's approach, but I decided a long time ago not to approach these experiences in terms of belief or disbelief. I used to get real hung up fretting about the "reality" or meaning of this kind of experience. And I could get real bent out of shape arguing about it but it just left me frazzled to no purpose.

They are what they are. I don't know how they happen. I don't know that they mean anything -- but I suspect they do, and I tend to act as if they do.

For this reason I just loved what Helen wrote, I am so grateful to that young man for giving in to his instincts and singing that song. Yes.

Ferrara,

I don't try to convince people who don't want to be objective about it. If they want data, anecdotes, experiences and then they want to evaluate that and make up their own minds, that's fine. I'll participate in the conversation, while it is on that footing. But if they start telling me what I really feel and experience, then I leave them to it.

An open scientific mind is a good thing. A closed mind which is already made up is too hard to deal with in this area, and worse still is a closed mind belonging to someone who strongly believes that he/she is being scientific and objective when in fact s/he is using whatever data is offered to her/him to confirm her/his pre-conceived beliefs. I don't bother trying to converse in that case. I don't feel a need to prove anything to someone like that, which is why I am conspicuously absent from some threads on this topic when certain person(s) join the thread.

Also, I went to a few classes to enhance my psychic & intuitive abilities. One of the most important messages I got from those classes is to say it if you get the message. If you sit on the message, eventually the ability will get stifled. If you express the message (diplomatically, mindful of people's feelings, etc) then more messages will arrive. And also I learned not to over-analyse the message and try to make sense of it myself. Just give the message and assume that it means something to the person it was intended for.

Years ago when I had a sister we had a connection...we'd KNOW when something bad was going on with each other...I called once and said What the HELL is going on up there? She said, I was just about to call you and ask you that! Turned out to be our brother...he had a minor car crash and was in ER/trauma.

I don't have a sister anymore, I disowned and divorced her. Don't ask.

Just had another....here I am stitting at the computer...all alone in the house at 23:26. SOMEBODY, (friend) just lightly smacked me on the back/side of my left shoulder....human type....I said..OK...who are you and why do you need me? Sit down and talk.....no answer...It kinda felt like a light fly swatter tap....I'll see if they come back later....

VERY strange...why did they show up if they didn't want to talk to me????

Sorcha dear,

You said: "OK...who are you and why do you need me?"

Maybe the question is: "who are you and why do I need you?"

Food for thought, and maybe I'm barking up the wrong arborial structure, but....

It is a two way street.

And, Sorcha, maybe they just wanted to be with you, or to let you know they cared, and that's all they could manage to get across right then? Just, "Hi, I'm here, glad to see you." ???

Hi again,

I'm really surprised that no-one has dropped into this thread demanding that we show irrefutable "scientific" evidence for all of our "unsubstantiated" claims of psychic abilities and phenomena. (I hope I haven't jinxed us, now!) :-)

I don't know if I have posted this at Mudcat before, but I don't think I have. In 2002 it was the first Monday of a two week holiday (unpaid, so not stress free) holiday from teaching. I was determined to relax and enjoy at least a couple of days without having to do any of the class marking or class preparation for the next term, but I found myself feeling very restless. I couldn't settle to anything. I tried reading, I tried watching one of my favourite detective shows on tv, but I just couldn't sit still. Normally I have no trouble at all in relaxing, but not this day. Finally I just gave up and decided to go into my office/computer room and do some marking.

As soon as I sat down the telephone rang. It was my brother-in-law phoning to tell me that my Mum had passed away suddenly, only within the previous hour. I knew then that that was why I couldn't settle down to anything that day.

Another time, when my Grandma was dying, I woke up at about 6.30 am and started thinking about her. As I focused on her I "saw" her lying on the bed at the nursing home, but I saw her from above the bed, like she was floating above the bed looking down at herself, and I was floating next to her. I realised that it was her time to go, so I stayed with her, intuitively speaking, and she made it to a doorway (between life and the other side) but she didn't want to let go. I called on an entity/guardian angel I know to come and help her on her way. Finally she let herself give up on this life and move forward. My Mum phoned me within the hour and told me that Grandma had passed on, just at the time that I was "with" her.

Have you had any similar experiences of messages or feelings when someone has passed on?

Also, about pets: When I was in early high school I used to walk past a house every day where a beautiful white, fluffy samoyed dog lived. We were great friends and I always stopped and patted her, and talked to her. Not long after that I saw an ad in the paper and someone was giving away a samoyed. I begged and pleaded with my parents but they said no. I found out afterwards, after it was too late, that the dog was my friend Susie, and that the couple had to give her away because the man was now in a wheelchair and they couldn't look after her any more.

If I had known it was them we could possibly have worked out some arrangement where I could have looked after Susie but the family could still be with her. I was devastated that we had all lost Susie.

Some years later I was learning meditation at a spiritualist centre and one night I was sitting in the meditation circle and I felt something leaning against my leg. I realised that it was a big dog (in spirit) and that it was Susie, coming back to tell me that she knew how much I loved her and how much I had wanted her to come and live with me.
