Subject: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: kendall Date: 11 Jul 06 - 09:04 AM My doctor recently prescribed a med called OMACOR, 4 times daily, 1 gram each. This is expensive, so I asked him what is the difference between Omacor and plain cod liver oil. He said he didn't know, and I should ask my pharmacist. Well, she didn't know either. Is there a doctor in the house? |

Geez, you want I should bait your traps too? |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: kendall Date: 11 Jul 06 - 09:42 AM Thanks Mate. No, I'll bait the traps, you can gut and filet them. I'm beginning to think that there is no difference, but the makers of OMACOR want us to think there is. My trigliceride count was 1500 when he put me on the Omacor. I hate to think I'm helping to make a drug company richer than it should be. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Rain Dog Date: 11 Jul 06 - 11:47 AM Cod Liver Oil. One of the greatest con tricks ever. People of a certain age will remember having to take a spoonful each day. Cruelty to children it was. Now malt and cod liver oil. That was a bit easier to cope with. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: GUEST Date: 11 Jul 06 - 11:51 AM With a count of 1500, I think I would stick with the Doc's prescription. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: kendall Date: 11 Jul 06 - 12:08 PM I will stick with the Doctor's advice until my next lipid profile. If the count drops to near normal, I might try the cod liver oil caps. Giok, I do eat oily fish. Love broiled salmon. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Peace Date: 11 Jul 06 - 01:07 PM "People of a certain age will remember having to take a spoonful each day." I am 58, and when I was a kid my dear grandmother (from England) gave me a spoon a day during the winter months (all 8 of them, I'm in Canada). To this day I recall the taste and actually don't mind it. Of course, if it's a choice between CLO and a good beer . . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Charmion Date: 11 Jul 06 - 03:58 PM I, too, took cod-liver oil from a spoon as a child -- and liked it. Of course, my mum's cooking was diabolical so I was no judge of provender; I think I was won over by the spoon. It was a silver apostle spoon, one of a set of eight kept in a special green morocco box. I don't remember them used for any other purpose. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: kendall Date: 11 Jul 06 - 04:24 PM I hated the taste of CLO, but now it comes in jell caps. Easy to swallow, no taste unless you bite them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Peace Date: 11 Jul 06 - 04:47 PM . . . or burp later. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Jack the Sailor Date: 11 Jul 06 - 06:43 PM Yeah, Burping the gel caps is worse than drinking the oil. Its so unexpected and .... strange. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Beer Date: 11 Jul 06 - 07:01 PM Peace. I use to go down to the shore(Prince Edward Island. Skinners Pond. Stompin Tom Country) with Mum and she would scrape the oil off the tops of the barrels take it home boil it and you can guess the rest. Line up before leaving for school and down the hatch. I use to gag back then and I could gag just thinking about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Jul 06 - 08:42 PM Love that salmon! Just avoid that farm-raised drek (however it's spelled). It tastes bland and isn't nearly as good for you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Rapparee Date: 11 Jul 06 - 09:41 PM I prefer wild salmon, but I'll eat farm-raised (from Chile and BC) if I can't get wild. I've got two nice Copper River Salmon fillets in the freezer right now.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Jul 06 - 09:53 PM And for those who were plagued with cod liver oil back in the day, I'm sure you may well remember this one too ........The packaging is better but I have to wonder about the taste. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: RichM Date: 11 Jul 06 - 10:06 PM gawd, castoria! As soon as I read your post, Spaw, I had a vivid memory of the taste! I was never fond of it, but it was an improvement on what it replaced, for me: Castor oil... Now, there is a genuine puke-ifier. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Becca72 Date: 12 Jul 06 - 08:28 AM I feel so lucky that I never had to endure either of these. When we were sick my mother would give us baking soda mixed with orange juice. Instant puke inducer. Bleck! |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: kendall Date: 12 Jul 06 - 08:34 AM This is a good place to bring up the worst tasting thing we have ever injested. (No pun intended) 1. Castor oil 2. Haggis 3. Cod Liver oil 4. Marmite |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Becca72 Date: 12 Jul 06 - 08:41 AM Ok, dad, that covers just above every meal mum cooked... |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Rapparee Date: 12 Jul 06 - 09:36 AM Nuoc Nam. Kimchee. Onion tea. The water from the well at a certain cemetery in western Illinois (I didn't drink it, it was downhill from the graves). |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Bunnahabhain Date: 12 Jul 06 - 10:55 AM Well, some things are always going to be an aquired taste. I like both haggis and marmite... I find it's textures more than tastes that really set me off. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cod Liver oil and Omacor From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Jul 06 - 01:48 PM Worst thing I remember tasting was a dish my mother fixed one time only. She picked up the recipe at the Agricultural extension office. It was for liver and kidney teriyaki. Gag. We renamed in liver and kidney hari kari. |

" The stuff Mum fed us was _minted_ cod liver oil, a decidedly more palatable version. One has to be careful with fish oils these days. If it has not been processed, there is a risk of heavy metals and other contaminants. Me, I eat anchovies at every chance. |
