The Chinese empress is dying. A large black pearl is taken from her mouth and put into a little red haired girl's mouth. From that time forward the girl is rendered immortal while not physically aging beyond 30 and lives various adventures in many different eras. I WISH I could remember who & what it was about, but I can't... Hollywood did a remake of a film that Oliver had been the lead in, & whoever played the role in the remake failed to get across one scene anything like as well as Larry had done (in the opinion of the Critics). The fact is, this Hollywood actor had played the scene with much wringing of hands & wailing, etc, very dramatically (& no it wasnt Hamlet, & it wasnt 'The Scottish Play'...am pretty sure it wasnt Shakespeare at all) & Larry had done it with his back to the camera.

It was actually SAID by one Critic that "Olivier is a better actor with the BACK OF HIS NECK than 'xxxxx' (whoever it was) at his best.

Wish I knew what it was to see the 2 films & compare!

He's a hard act to follow. though I believe Kenneth Branagh did well in Henry V and Charles Dance made a very creditable stab at Max de Winter.

Paul, would that have been "Wuthering Heights?" 1939, Olivier played Heathcliff and Merle Oberon was Cathy. It's been remade about eleventy-fouteen times, but it would be hard to beat the 1939 version.

(Except for the exceedingly dumb ending when Cathy's and Heathcliff's ghosts walk off over the moor hand in hand and disappear into the sunset. Some Hollywood dork's bright idea>)

wld- Branagh did a BRILLIANT job of Henry V...I admit, I prefer to watch that version rather than the Olivier one.

Max De Winter I had to look up! I HAVE seen the Olivier 'Rebecca', but never the Charles Dance one. I certainly shol, as I rate Charles Dance quite high.

1st one is Butch & Sundance, of course!

2nd one COULD be 'Blazing Saddles', but that would be too easy, so I suspect something else...I just dont know what!

3rd...no bloody idea!

As for my "If Uncle doesn't get his cut, we nail your hide to the barnyard door", that was from a movie called "The Mating Game" (1959. Debbie Reynolds, Tony Randall, and Paul Douglas.) Perhaps a trifle of a film, but it was a family favorite when I was growing up. According to the credits it was based on the book "The Darling Buds of May" by H. E. Bates, though the movie was set in Maryland, USA. I've never read "Darling Buds", nor have I ever seen the British TV show, but I plan to read at least the first book in the series in the near future.

There was a   1970 rendition of "Wuthering Heights" with Anna Calder-Marshall as Cathy and Timothy Dalton as Heathcliff. Timothy Dalton is one helluvan actor, and I've seen him in a number of movies where he was excellent. A suitably brooding and intense Heathcliff.

My wife, Barbara, is a real fan of the novels of Jane Austin and the Bronte sisters, and she's familiar enough with Jane Eyre to be able to do a sing-along with the dialogue and snarl a bit when they get it wrong (or, at least, change it substantially). We saw a 1983 mini-series of Jane Eyre (on Masterpiece Theatre) with Zelah Clark as a suitable meek-appearing but strong-willed Jane and Timothy Dalton as the intense, haunted Rochester. Excellent!

Most Americans probably know Dalton best from his two outings as James Bond. Not his best work, but that wasn't his fault. He did his best with scripts by people who would have been more at home doing comic books. Good effort, but he didn't have anything to work with.

Okay, this should be an easy one:

Don, I NEED to see that version! Never have yet, & like you, I rate Timothy Dalton VERY highly.

He was the only SERIOUS James Bond, for a start!(I'm not one to EVER knock Connery, but his Bond films 'look' very 60's, same as Roger Moore's look very glitzy, tacky & 70's). Timothy Dalton played it much more like the Bond of the novels, & his 2 werent all just 'sheen & no substance' either, & a lot less 'comic book' than the majority of Bond films.

Got it, drummer! As I recall, Goldfinger said it to Bond when he had Bond strapped to a table and was about to bisect him with an industrial laser.

I thought Sean Connery was an outstanding Bond, and the first three movies, "Dr. No," "From Russia with Love," and "Goldfinger" were quite good. It was from then on that they went downhill and got more comic-booky. They got gadget happy, and the story couldn't get under way until Q, the mad scientist, supplied Bond with his newest equipment. "Thunderball" got kind of silly (Bond swimming underwater for long minutes on an oxygen tank no bigger than a cigar stuck in his mouth). "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was not a half bad movie (followed the book fairly well, and it had the immense advantage of costarring Diana Rigg!), but even though George Lazenby seemed to be a competent enough actor, as Bond, he was just lack-luster, especially following a charismatic powerhouse like Connery.

I saw a couple of the ones with Roger Moore. Now, I've liked Roger Moore in other things, but one critic put it right where it is. He said, "Roger Moore plays James Bond like he's doing a drawing room comedy." Unconvincing.

Then along came Timothy Dalton. I had seen Dalton in the "Jane Eyre" miniseries, as Darnley in "Mary, Queen of Scots," as Heathcliff, and several other things, and I also heard that Dalton like the Ian Fleming novels, thought the movies had become too frivolous, and wanted to return Bond to Fleming's original concept. But apparently both movie folks and fans thought he played Bond much too seriously. I thought he was great, but script-wise, he had only pabulum to work with.

Pierce Brosnan? Lightweight.
