It's nearly Banbury Time again!!!

And yes, Merek'n'Dary will be programming in an official MudGather at the Town & Country Club. I'm hoping it'll be around Saturday tea-time, though I've not seen a program yet. Definitely a MudRaffle event, so gather up those prizes to bring & collect all the chocolate you can find....

So, who'll be there?

We should be there - not sure when my concert spots with Steve are, hopefully will make the "gather" this time, otherwise see you in the T&C for sings anyway.

I did tell Merek and Dary to put "subject to contractions" against our little concert spasms!!!! so the same goes for the gather! (Get the hot towels ready.........).

Now that I am not going to the Getaway I may be tempted to attend, but only if getting from the camp site to the town is easy, as I am not too good on my pins these days.

Back again after a Hard (disk) Wipe, brill to see so many interested, will get details asap & will post them here. Can't believe there'll be no chocolate covered celery though *sob*

Geordie - our Banbury Gather will be officially programmed but is kinda Fringe too. Don't think you'll need a ticket but Banbury Fest is well worth the ticket price - just take a glance at the web-site. Lots of Fringe to do aswell though so please plan to join us!!

Breezy Dear - it looks like the Saturday & my guess would be tea-time, 'bout time you came to a Gather!

Brill news Giok - think you'll find the Bus very useful!!!

Can't believe you won't be wih us Lynne, am already bereft - where will we be without you & ShadyLady keeping us in line?

So, hopeful MudGatherers (duties notwithstanding) as follows:

my guru always said (with the inflatable MadCat)
Richard Atkins
The lovely Noreen
Splott Man with his little Pat & spoons (hopefully with the Orchestra)
Herga Kitty
skipy
John 'Giok' MacKenzie
Sue the Borderer (herby borders permitting)
Geordie-Peorgie
daughter (subject to contractions)
Breezy
Adrianl

Am certain that there'll be plenty of other Catters signing the Register on the day, especially as there'll be 'MBS (Middle Bar Singers) on tour' running singing sessions too in the Town & Country Club over the weekend.

So, let's keep this thread up & keep it attractive Cats! Start planning/stockpiling your chocolate experiences and the MudRaffle prizes - come on, someone must be able to keep up the Celery standard in Lynne's absence *grin*

Oh, and don't forget the hot towels....

Pat Spoons is doing her Spoons Workshop, and this year the resulting Orchestra is programmed into the Sat evening "Something Completely Different" concert in the Theatre, which she is also compering beyond compare. No news on which dress yet, but the black one (yes THE black one) has shrunk a bit and is more revealing, so there may be supplementary foundation garments.

JudeL & Soupdragon (duties permitting), SelchieRS (hadn't forgotten your warm support), Eyelander, Miskinman, MBSLynne et al hopefully & plenty of foundation garments - what a wonderful and 'strangely weird' Gather we have in store :-)

Hope all this talk of thermal vests will keep the Banbury weather fair! And does this mean that the world-renowned Celery will be on the menu?

Just been catching up on the threads. It looks like a good gathering is building and Dary and I are looking forward to seeing all of you and I think, this year, there will be a big tin of Roses chocolates from the organisers! Sorry not to see all who have said they cannot make it but wish them all well. Some notes: The Town and Country Club is a free venue in the High Street, therefore you do not have to buy a festival ticket. However, if you want to camp at the official campsite there will be a charge of £5 pppn. The MudGather time is 3pm - 7pm Saturday 14th October. As previously stated, the Middle Bar Singers will be at the same venue 7-11pm (& onwards according to the landlord) Friday 13th (I know!), 7-11pm (& onwards according to the landlord) Saturday 14th and 12-3pm (& onwards according to the landlord). The festival "Big Sing" will also be in there led by festival artists John Morris, GMW, Alan Whitbread and Cappella from 12 noon-2.30pm. So everyone we know that loves singing can have a whole weekend of doing just that!
Love to you all, Merek

Well, I've just spent a very frustrating half hour trying to find out from the festival website and/or by googling for camping info at Banbury, exactly where one might camp and how far it is from the festival site, and would you belive the information is not there? Is there any reason one can't have a map from the festival of exactly where its camping is, and I simply don't believe allegedly commercial campsites don't provide maps showing exactly where they are.

Bah. Victor Meldrew.

Richard: Sorry you've had a bad time searching. I know where there camping was last year & I know that it's moved to a new venue this year (as it says on the website), but I must admit I don't know exactly where it is. I'll see if someone can pop the info here for us asap!

Geordie-Peorgie: glad you've got the extra pass-out & can take your time to enjoy Banbury & meet loadsa Catters!

Good to hear you'll be joining us Carol - have you heard about the massive variety of charity shops in the town?

Seaking: sory you won't be away from the Stilts for this Banbury, maybe next year will work out better on your rota!

A map and information sheet will be sent to everyone who has bought advance tickets and will also be available at Festival Information for those purchasing tickets (If available) just before or on the day.

Alas, it appears that I have committed myself to play in ROchester Market on the 15th. Have fun everyone.

It looks as if the camping at the schools is only if you have a full season ticket anyway, so I'd still have been stuck on far-flung commercial campsites that do not give away their locations.....

My son was born in the Green in Wallsend - I wonder what that makes him???
This will be our fourth year at Banbury and I've always managed to avoid the charity shops - have you got me mixed up with a friend of mine who visits as many as pos. in every town she visits? Now Banbury Market's a different thing altogether but as we'll be on our way over to 'warmer climes' straight form Banbury I think the 'Boss' will limit any retail therapy that I do!!! Didn't the SARs used to be in the back room of a pub with the kitchen at the very back so they had to carry meals through the room all the time?
'Cos I don't think I've been in the Town and Country Club - sounds almost as 'upmarket'as the Conservative Club!!
Anyhow cold I put my pennyworth in and also ask for a non-smoking singing room please?

It would certainly be nice if it were non-smoking but am not sure if we can arrange that with the club. The room we're in is still part of the club & has access to the car park and other essential facilities, so I don't think we'd be able to impose a non-smoking ban on the club members. But if the Catters themselves wanted to be non-smoking then surely that would help the situation?

We could certainly discuss / decide / agree between ourselves to be non-smoking for the Gather. Tricky to try to get a majority vote on a thread many people may not see, but perhaps people could state their preference here & we'll see how it pans out?

I tend to avoid smoking in a sing, and would expect others to do the same without being told. There are some Club Members including the Landlord who are smokers though. They were mostly at the other end of this large venue last year where there are three large extractor fans. Check they are switched on.

That is emotional blackmail Emma B, and is not exactly a constructive contribution to this discussion!
I know you have other issues with overpowering perfumes, and deodorants causing you an adverse reaction. However the same is true of smoking as regards other people.
Personally I defend the right to smoke, but not the right to impose it on others.
We now have a total ban on smoking in public places here in Scotland, and I can tell you that going into a pub for a drink up here is now a much more pleasant experience for me.
It is not too much to ask smokers to be circumspect, and to please not smoke in the room where the Mudmeet takes place is it?

So far it looks like we have 'sensitive' smokers amongst us - knew that! It has been much easier to sing in the Middle Bar without all the smoky atmosphere & it would be nice to think that we could have an arrangement like that at the Gather - I agree that a 'ban' would be a harsh method and would put people off!!

Hope this helps. - yes, yes, the stewarding lists explains how to get there from the M4o but if you want to avoid the centre from other directions it helps to plan. Especially it you are towing at rush hour.

The 'quiet' one as I understand it is for persons with mobility problems or families (but maybe that's the same thing) and is Only by prior arrangement with Merek'n'Dary themselves. The main site is Hanwell Fields School which looks like a good site - see Mr Red's directions above!

Right - been looking at the thresds today and looks like I've to clear up some worries/confusions. First - Map. Following a call from Best Mate Richard (Yes sorry could not deal with it staight away cos I was trying to find my way across unknown territory in London to sign off the artwork for the festival programme), He said a lot of catters were having problems trying to find there way to the new campsite at Hanwell Fields because, being on a new housing estate, multi-map and streetmap have never heard of it. They have not even up-dated the town centre in Banbury which was re-built 7 years ago! No hope there! So, I have spent a whole day (sorry I lied - went out to meet friends for a drink about two hours) re-constructing the map I did for sending out to people who have bought tickets for the festival and my computer (or me) has lost in its wisdom (or not if it was me!). It is now done and hooray, I hear someone say, it is now on the Website. Not a brilliant re-production, but I am sure sufficiant for ya al' to read and know where you're going to camp.
Second concern I see is if you have to get a season or any other ticket to camp. Answer is a definate NO! Being festivalite's ourselves, we know how important it is to look after everyone whether they buy tickets to see the artists, or if they just want to come and fringe it. There is room for all. We believe that a festival makes a fringe and a fringe makes a festival! Finally, Smoking. We do not make the rules here. If the Catters, or MBS, want to impose a ban it is up to them. The same at the Festival venues, smoking, if it is banned, it is done by the venue management's themselves - not by us as Festival Organisers. Hope that settles all of the worries. If not, do not hesitate to contact us.

OK Chaps & Chappessess!
I think I've cracked it....

There appear to be 2 Festival Web-addresses. The one linked at the top of this thread is for page:

http://www.banburyfolkngoodmusicday.co.uk/index.htm

And the one that Merek'n'Dary have been updating maps on is:

http://www.banburyfolkfestival.co.uk/

I'm sorry there's been so much confusion about this, not sure how it could have happened, but as you all know, there's lots of everything at Banbury Folk Festival - including Web-sites it seems *grin*

Anyway, the Maps that have been very kindly added are on this version:

The whole point is that Dukes Meadow Road is too new to find on any map. Dukes Meadow Drive is on estate agent sales pages. The school is not listed as a school on the web. I just tried directory enquiries
Hanwell Fields Community School telephone: 01295 709583
Rotary Way, off Southam Rd, Banbury. OX16 1SN
that post code is not on multimap or streetfinder. Rotary way I assume is the road north of Tesco at the roundabout with no left turn on maps except the one I link to.

On my map the dotted lines are what I assume to be the road and if you get there, there will be signs. I assume!

And for Mick Finn or any Worcestershire people - here is Queensway & Woodgreen Avenue avoiding the town centre from the Bloxham Road which would come from Bloxham, Chipping Norton and all points west.

However The Badger and I will not be at the festival as I shall be celebrating my growing younger in Derbyshire for the weekend - mark us present in mind but not in body.

On Monday, Derek & I completed the production of the road signage and marked lamp posts etc to show the locations for puting it up. Just follow the signs!!!
Unfortunately, the OX16 1ER postcode found by Snuffy on the Ofsted website gives a slightly wrong location on the Google map - you should go off at the second roundabout from the main road (not the first) and then its 100 yards on the right.
[To complicate it further, the school's postcode on the Oxfordshire Education website is OX16 1SN but that isn't yet registerable on Google or Multimap or MapQuest!]
The signs will show you!!!
See you all tomorrow.

cartographical orientation layouts to you.

New locations and poor access to maps is important burble for working folk and it got us to a point that we will have next year - accurate KNOWLEDGE. Those who leave work at 4 or 5pm and towing (some of us can take caravans to work) will be hard pushed to find things in the rush hour.

My point is that signage is usually good at folk festivals BUT

it is good for the folk who put it there - not the driver who doesn't know where the signs might be, has idiots coming at them from all directions and those pesky kids coming home from school and see a target to be removed, turned or generally dis-heavalled.

My advice is to check signage at 4pm and 6pm - as I am on duty somewhere - probably campsite 1, I may be doing it myself at 5.55.

And it helps to have a printable map so that we can visualise where we are going before we arrive.

Would you sing a song in a singaround without consulting and memorising the words in advance?
I rest my case.

The sun is out, the fog is lifting, preparations are nearing completion for another wonderful Banbury Folk Festival and the signs for the campsite will be up this afternoon!

Mr Red: Many thanks for all your efforts to get us to our campsites safely, towing in Banbury traffic - it really is much appreciated. I'm certain Richard meant no offence, he probably thought that the maps and signs would be sufficient. But you are quite correct in expressing concern for tired drivers, thanks again! Hope you'll get a chance to come along to the Gather - we'll all recognise you, even in disguise *grin*

Looking back over this thread, and remembering the one for last year's Banbury, I'm surprised that not a single person has mentioned one of the most important things: What sort of beer will be on offer at the Gather venue?

Well, the answer is - I don't know, I'm just hoping it'll be a good one - and that there'll be cider for MBSLynne!

And of course, there's been little discussion on the chocolate front......

So pack your smiles, songs, chocolate & raffly prizes & have a safe journey - see you there!!!

Fantastic Gather & Festival!

Thanks to all for coming along & helping us to raise another £63 for the Mudcat by bringing raffle prizes, buying tickets or being a wonderful Catter called Selchie RS who did the hard work of actually selling the tickets. The money will be winging it's way across the pond as soon as I can arrange it.

Wonderful to meet some Catters from across the water (jimmyt complete with the Lovely Jayne from the USA and also bfdk from Denmark) and also the Borders!! Regretfully we didn't hear a song from some Catters who had to disappear fairly early on as they had other festival commitments. Here's the Register:

Geordie-Peorgie & Mrs P: So glad you came along & joined us, it WAS a brill Gather wasn't it? And yes, it takes a fair few meetings to start collecting faces (there are still names on the register I hav't sussed)! Hadn't realised that Mrs P sings, but passing the MadCat gives everyone their own choice as to whether to sing I reckon. On the other hand, sometimes a little encouragement is needed, so I'll try to remember that in future. Hope Gosport stops booking you (not really) so you can join us at Miskin, you will love it! Anything is good for a MudRaffle prize, but obviously if there are youngsters involved we have to be careful with boozy items.

Mrs (& Mr) Scarecrow: Welcome to the Cat!!! A convoluted entry to this wonderful world, but now you're here I hope you'll call in oftem :-)

So, lets nip over to the Bedworth thread & see who'll be at the next Gather!

BTW, hope they all have a Fab time in the Gainsborough MudCatter Day today - they're just starting to learn about the benefits of Chocolate over that side of the UK. As a matter of interest, the USA Catters have come up with the idea of Chocolate coated Salmon - there's a thought.....

I've just PM'd all the Catters on the Gather Register with the following:

We are hoping that an idea could come to fruition, with your help, to help raise some funds to send to Pene Azul. You may have read the thread explaining the fund-raiser started up by catspaw in the USA, but if you haven't, here's the addy:

This thread!

Micca actually recorded the whole of the Banbury MudGather as a souvenir for himself, and now feels certain that a souvenir CD could be made from it. He's going through the material over the next week or so to select items with good resolution, which could be included in it, but we do need to (a) hopefully get permissions from the singers and (b) identify the singers and the songs correctly.

So firstly, if you sang, would you feel OK about your singing being included in the CD? If so, please let me know which songs you sang so that we can try to identify them against the recording.

If you aren't happy about being included on the CD, please just let me know, and tell me what you sang, so that we can ensure that your wishes are respected.

Whether you wish to be included, or not, or didn't sing at the Gather, maybe you would be interested in purchasing a copy as a souvenir? They will be home-produced at a reasonable price, but it will be the content that counts!! Production costs and postage etc will need to be covered, but the balance received from the purchases will be sent to help Pene.

Perhaps you could let me know your thoughts, or perhaps post them (as a Guest if you wish) on the Banbury thread where I will be posting a version of this idea as soon as I've finished sending this mass-mailing of PM's. We will need to set a pre-production time-limit for replies if this CD is to be a viable proposition, so keep an eye on the thread & reply to me asap.
Hil

Many thanks to all who have already replied to this idea! I'll be gathering up replies to help Micca work out what can be done.

By the way, I'd just like to mention that the idea for this is all Micca's, and he'll have all the hard work to do too, so send him your positive thoughts over the next month or so please to keep him going! I'm just the Messenger, Go-fer and organiser of extraordinary lists :-)

Would be fantastic to be able to use these for our Secret Santa parcels, but I honestly don't think there's enough time to figure it all out, produce and post them out before you pack your parcels.

I'll be away from tomorrow for a long weekend in Devon - singing at the After the Fair Festival in Bampton so don't worry if I'm not online for a few days, I'll continue information gathering on my return.

Have a good weekend!
