Subject: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 14 Sep 06 - 03:09 PM A third white buffalo has just been born on a farm in Janesville, Wisconsin. about a half mile from where my Mother lives. Ten years ago, the first white buffalo was born and it was considered by the Plains Indians as an event almost of the same significance as the second coming of Christ. The birth received international news coverage, with people coming from all over the world to see it. It was featured on Japanese television, and many Japanese traveled to this country to see it. Plains Indians, who considered the buffalo calf sacred traveled many 100's of miles on foot, to come and place offerings in front of the calf. My wife Ruth and I were out visiting my Mother ten years ago when the first calf was born. It is the believe of the Plains Indians that the calf is the reincarnation of a woman who appeared long ago, wearing white hides. She taught the people rituals and music. As the white calf matured, it's coat was prophesied to change from white to black, yellow and red, the colors of the various races of me, before turning brown again. The first bufallo, named Miracle, died at the age of ten. A second calf was born in 1996, but died after three days. The indians believe that the white bufgfalo will reunite all the races of man and restore balance to the world. Sounds good to me. Next time we go to see my Mom, we'll drop by and pay our respects. Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: MMario Date: 14 Sep 06 - 03:28 PM well - there is a herd in Flagstaff that had seven white buffalo born between '97 and '05; probably had several more since then as they now have three breeding female white buffalo and two males - one of which is reaching breeding age. |

Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: MMario Date: 14 Sep 06 - 03:53 PM BTW - there are two types of White Buffalo - the albino ones - which are born white and usually stay white; and the "other type" - frequently born coloured and turning white, or born white and changing colour, or changing colour several times over lifetime. Then there are some that have beefalo in their ancestry - which negates all bets because they can get the white from the non-bison genes. Albinism in bison appears to be a partially expressed trait in many instances - true albino's should have pink eyes, they may be blind or deaf; many "albino" bison have blue eyes, and they are NOT prone to blindness or deafness. There haven't been enough of them or enough studies to determine whether this is an expression of the albino gene (suspected as usually such an animal has true albino relatives nearby in the family tree) or a "dominant white" condition such as in some other species. The family of white buffalo in flagstaff appears to be a seperate mutation - they are dark eyed |

Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: Severn Date: 15 Sep 06 - 06:58 AM I first heard of the legend in a garbled form as a kid, as an episode of the old "Rin Tin Tin" TV show, complete with the post commander (Called Rip Masters, I believe, in the series) singing a song about the legend around a joint campfire of Cavalry and friendly Indians, each verse ending with "...The Whi-i-i-i-ite Buffalo..."with "Buffalo, Buffalo, Buffalo..." echoed by those around the campfire (in perfect harmony, sounding, naturally enough, like the same chorus that seemingly sang the theme songs of three quarters of those TV Western theme songs). In the show, only the true of heart,or something of the like could actually see one, and of course Corporal Rusty sees one on the horizon at the end of the show, when he's running from a Buffalo stampede and falls down, and when he looks up again there are buffalo grazing calmly all around him and some friendly Indians and his Cavalry buddies standing around him, saying "Yes, I believe you saw it." There was a bad guy involved in the plot, too. Did anyone else remember this? Or am I either just dreaming or extremely noble and true of heart? |

Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Sep 06 - 06:59 AM The legend also appears in one of the X-Files episodes... it's been a while since I watched them all so I can't remember which one.... still, I wasn't doing much else today! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: Severn Date: 15 Sep 06 - 07:51 AM I believe the bad guy DID get trampled by the buffalo, while Rusty survived! ...and, oh yes! If anyone could dredge up the lyrics to the aforementioned "White Buffalo" song.... Someone Noble and True Of Heart.... Thanks in advance. YO-O-O-O-O, Rinty! Yo' Mama! Yo-Yo Ma Yo! Adrian! |

There's hope for tomorrow, Ooh,we're workin'on today. Well,it happened long time ago, in the new magic land. The Indian and the buffalo, they existed hand in hand.... The Indian needed food, he needed skins for a roof. But he only took what they needed, baby. Millions of buffalo were the proof. Yeah, its all right. But then came the white man, with his thick and empty head. He couldnt see past the billfold, he wanted all the buffalo dead. It was sad...It was sad. Oh yeah...yes indeed. Oh yes, it happened a long time ago, baby. In the new magic land. See,the Indian and the buffalo, they existed hand in hand. The Indians, they needed some food, and some skins for a roof. They only took what they needed, baby. millions of buffalo were the proof, yeah. But then came the white dogs, with their thick and empty heads. They couldnt see past the billfold. they wanted all the buffalo dead. Everything was SO sad. When I looked above the canyon wall, some strong eyes did I see. I think its somebody comin' around to save my ass, baby. I think...I think he's comin' around to save you and me. Boys...... I said, above the canyon wall... strong eyes did glow. It was the leader of the land, baby. OH MY GOD, The GREAT WHITE BUFFALO..... LOOK OUT!!!! LOOK OUT!!!!!!! Well,he got the battered herd. He led em cross the land. With the Great White Buffalo, they gonna make a final stand. The Great White Buffalo, comin'around to make a final stand. Well, look out here he comes. The great white buffalo, baby. Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: SINSULL Date: 15 Sep 06 - 11:44 AM Listen here: http://thinhippo.com/steve/whitebuffalo.html The White Buffalo I have heard many stories from an old indian friend and this is my favorite even though it has no end There's an old indian legend I was told long ago, it's about a special valley and the White Buffalo. There are few who have seen him though they've looked high and low for the trail is long and winding to the white Buffalo The legend says you'll find him if your heart is brave and true and you treat all men as brothers no matter what they do I have searched for that valley since I started to grow, I won't stop until I find it and the white Buffalo. the legend says you'll find him if your heart is brave and true and you treat all men as brothers no matter what they do I have searched for that valley since I started to grow, I won't stop until I find it and the white Buffalo. For I know it's right to find the White Buffalo! Composer: Bergman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: katlaughing Date: 16 Sep 06 - 04:40 PM That this latest birth is a male doesn't make it any less significant in American Indian prophecies, which say that such an animal will reunite all the races of man and restore balance to the world, Hand said. He said the buffalo's coat will change from white to black, red and yellow, the colors of the various races of man, before turning brown again. The birth of a white male buffalo means men need to take responsibility for their families and the future of the tribe, Hand said. Makes a lot of sense to me. Lucky those of you who get to visit it. May it live long and fulfill its destiny. Mitakuye Oyasin, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born From: Severn Date: 18 Sep 06 - 11:36 AM That's The One! Thanks for finding it. Just got back in town and finally had a chance to listen. Brought back some serious childhood memories! That I never heard of THAT James Brown again, means he was NOT "the hardest working man in Show Business" (nor was that song ready for "Live At The Appollo!"). Where were those Trail Winders when some of the trails I've been on have stopped, and I nearly died of thirst from lack of a main spring? Are they anything like those German Clock Winders they sing about? |
